I just want to thank you again, Noj, for being so generous in putting together and disseminating so much music that I've been totally unacquainted with. I've been remiss in providing feedback but I can state that my daughter and I have listened several times to the first two discs and we've enjoyed quite a few tracks together. So that's a real plus since I've always felt "tortured" whenever I've been subjected to her music from her CDs or from the radio. So many thanks again.

Wow, so that is JG at the piano! Loved his work with Shaw and Pres but never heard him play with that kind of facility. Gotta get those sides with Slam.

Mike Lupica has a convincing column in today's New York Daily News about why he believes David Ortiz is this year's AL MVP: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/story/348686p-297514c.html

In case anyone needs reminding here. A-Rod was quite willing to have his contract adjusted downward in order to play for some people's beloved Red Sox. It was the players association that nixed it. Had A-Rod become a Red Sock ( ), I'm sure we wouldn't be reading all this nonsense about how a team can't go all the wiay with him on it. I certainly believe that all things being equal, had Clemens and Pettite not deserted the Yanks, we'd have a better record than the Cards this year and negatives about A-Rod would be totally laughed at. But we don't have those pitchers. Nevertheless with a starting staff devoid of Kevin Brown, Carl Pavano, and currently Mike Mussina, the Yanks are even in the loss column with the Red Sox and the division is up for grabs. Fenway doesn't scare me at all, I vividly recall seeing Bucky Dent win a pennant for us there. However the sight of David Ortiz and the Yankee Stadium short right field porch does scare me. We can win it all at Fenway and revenge would indeed be sweet.

Relax. The final 3 games are at Fenway against us. That will tell the tale.

Stuyvesant grad here, class of '61 (yikes!)

I highly recommend a video of the quartet that was done in a Tokyo television studio in May '63. Best visuals of Monk I've ever seen plus the music is terrific with excellent Dunlop. The version of "Evidence" alone is worth the price of admission.

Large list of jazz CD's for trade or sale
MartyJazz replied to felser's topic in Offering and Looking For...
That's actually worth quite a bit -- your endorsement is the difference between seriously looking at what's for sale and Chuck bait. ← I'll second that recommendation. I've had a few deals with John also. Very positive. -
I used a cut from that session, "Barengo", a jazz tango, in this past month's blindfold test here that I compiled. It was definitely a "hit", prompting quite a few of the participants to state that they intended to get the CD.

I totally agree. It seems like every time I see the Red Sox are in a tight game, he comes up with the winning hit in the 9th or extra innings. Plus his overall stats are awesome. He should be the first DH to win it, certainly if I had a vote. On another issue, do you realize that we're 2-1/2 games behind the Red Sox and if we had simply just taken care of business against the Devil Rays, i.e., win 2 of 3 over 19 games, we'd be 3 games up?! Boggles the mind.

No need to mention numbers, but here's wishing you get the most of this next decade.

Gary Giddins, too, used to say similar things about Rollins....again and again and again. So much so, in fact, that one got a little tired of hearing it sometimes. Yes Gary, you wanted to say, we know Rollins is great, now could you just move on? ← If you want to tell me to cool it and move on, leave Giddens out of it.

Need help donating goods to Katrina victims

My sister who is an assistant director at the National Resources Defense Council strongly suggests this outfit: http://www.secondharvest.org/ -
Here I am, trying to keep as low a profile as I can and you single me out. Right now, we're in last place in the AFC East and totally deserve to be. I've been off the Pennington bandwagon for quite some time, especially as I see Brady throw one laser beam pass after another and know deep down that Pennington might be a great QB coach one day, but he just doesn't have the goods to deliver more than a playoff spot and that's when his surrounding material is very good. To wit, I also wanted the Jets to somehow keep Lamont J instead of the far older Curtis M but also realize that it doesn't do well for club morale, not to mention the cap arithmetic, to cut the NFL rushing leader for a guy who's yet to prove (although I have no doubt that he will) that he's more than a backup. Being a Jet fan for as long as I have, I've come to expect the worst with an occasional highlight thrown in. Call it intermittent reinforcement. Therefore the Jets are just as likely to again lay an egg next week against the Fins as to blow them out with a "convincing" (temporarily at best) victory.

My latest Netflix rental and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The title is apt as the characters and their (mis)conceptions about various "others" continually crash creating situations that also reveal in quite a few instances our common humanity. Provocative, great script and well done with especially good performances by Matt Dillon, Thandie Newton and, perhaps surprisingly, Ludacris. An excellent ensemble performance evocative of one of the better Altman films.

Just finished listening. The last cut, "Night and Day" - guaranteed to take your breath away. A fabulous 20 minute jaunt! When writers such as Francis Davis point to Sonny as the greatest improvisor (of all time), one can play this track to show exactly why that assertion is true.

Vol.2 just arrived in today's mail. Digging it now. Nirvana! What's really nice is the presence of tunes I've never heard him play before, i.e., 'Nutty" (Monk), "A Foggy Day", "Flamingo".

OK, casual listen while doing some work and jotted down some notes: 1) Of all things another bass feature obviously. 2) Track sounds very familiar. Gotta be J.J., probably an early Blue Note cut. 3) Sounds like Dexter from one of those late '40s Savoy or Dial sessions. Can't place anyone else. 4) I think it's Griff on tenor but who's the alto? 5) Eastern mode, can't place the instrument, nor the tenor & trumpet. 6) Cecil Payne on bari? No idea of trumpet player. 7) This one I got pretty quickly. Track #5 on this: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:8t63mpmd9f3o 8) I dig this track. Live session. Is that Idrees Sulieman on tp? 9) Can't place tenor or trumpet or the finger snapper. 10) "If they asked me" I could listen to this all day without positively id'g the vibes player other than to say there's a Bags influence, but I don't think it's him. 11) Very familiar boppish tune from the '50s. But damn if the tenor player doesn't sound like Harold Land who's already made an appearance on this disc. Trumpet player reminds me of Bill Hardman but I don't think it's him, not "chirpy" enough. 12) Enjoyed this but unable to hazard a guess as to the alto and soprano. 13) Bass feature but NMCOT. As you can see, I'm not very good at id'g bassists which evidently has been your "theme" throughout both discs. Anyway, a lot of fun. Guess I'll go see what's already been id'd.

The difference maker usually is having defensive pressure when you're facing a very accurate and smart QB. Obviously, Brady had all day to find his receivers with 20-30 yard laser beam passes. When that's the case, the Raiders could have had two Randy Moss receivers out there. Doesn't make any difference.
-
My thought is a simple one - What's not to like? ← Well, for one thing, I've never been a Fathead fan. Much too R&B for my tastes. Does he play in a more "Blue Note" type of vein, or is it more of the same?
-
Well, if that's the case, I'll "one up" my guess of Terry Gibbs on track #15 with Chubby Jackson on bass.
-
OK, just had a listen and jotted some notes. Could only spot one of the tracks definitively but here goes nothing. 1 & 2) Very '20s sounding and if it's not Louis or Sidney, I'm hopeless when it comes to this period. 3) Sounds like a John Kirby group. Very tight ensemble work, probably Omer Simeon on clarinet. Enjoyed it. 4) Basie with Pres? Totally not familiar with this track. 5) Is that "Peg o' My Heart" played on a bass saxophone? Whatever, NMCOT. 6) Sounds like Fats Waller and of course, it's definitely Slam Stewart doing that vocalizing on bass. Don't know of any time they collaborated so the pianist must be someone else. I don't believe it's Guarnieri 'cause I never heard him play with that kind of facility. Great track! 7) You do like bass, don't you? Well it's Duke's "What Am I Here For?", but I can't tell you anything else. Nice. 8) Bass pizzicata, "Sophisticated Lady". Nothing else to report. 9) Tune is very familiar, can't place it. Pres-influence tenor - Illinois Jacquet? Good track. 10) More bass, sounds late '40s. Enjoyable track 11) This was a giveaway before you heard Buhania's voice at the end. 'Nuff said. 12) Another gimme. Had a musician friend who used to say "Nice geech (money) if you can work it". The one and only Sphere at the keys. 13) A very familiar early '50s blues. Sounds very much like Miles probably backed by Mingus on one of those Prestige dates they did back then. 14) Is that Bobby Hackett? Can't place trombone although I know that Hackett did a lot of work with Tea. Just doesn't sound anywhere as smooth as Tea does. 15) Like #10, a late '40s sound. Is that Terry Gibbs possibly on vibes? Diz-influenced trumpet, perhaps from Woody's band, Sonny Berman maybe? Tenor I can't place. 16) Pleasant piano trio but doesn't grab me. 17) No reaction 18) Ah, the one I got. Recognized PC's pizzicata style immediately, then I definitely heard Clifford Jordan on tenor. So I'm pretty sure it's from a PC Blue Note date in which Donald Byrd is the trumpeter I believe. 19) Hey, a very challenging and highly enjoyable track, but I'm lost trying to get a handle on the vibes, flute and trumpet players. Am anxious to get the lowdown on this one. The disc was uneven for my tastes but each track grabbed my attention. P.S. I just decided to edit this post in order to put in the link for #18 which happens to be track 4 on this album: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:0a3gtq9zbu42

How about when Dobie once mentioned the prospect of someone's dog getting lost and Maynard said "That would be like losing my Dizzy Gillespie records".
-
Received mine today. After seeing how much time and effort goes into making these BFTs, I just want to assure you that I'll give your discs as much consideration and feedback as you gave mine, and then some.

That's what I remember, "Dobie Gillis", not "Gilligan's.." Maynard getting spastic every time he heard the word "work". Also, appropriate for this forum, Maynard was very hip, into Monk, etc.
