  1. You're correct. Strangely believe it, I wasn't aware of the existing Hot Stove discussion when I posted about Valentine.
  2. I hesitate to begin a 2012 MLB Season thread so early, and since we're still in 2011 what do you all think about Bobby Valentine taking over as mgr of the Red Sox?
  3. This was released as part of the Jazz Icons series of wonderful DVDs available commercially. In addition to "OGDS", the group (includes Kenny Drew, NHOP, Tootie Heath) also plays "St. Thomas" and "Four".
  4. 99 pounds vs $53 here. How low can you really go?
  5. Individually they're tolerable, but tonight was the first time every damn one of 'em collapsed. I sure hope Harrison has a good complete game in him tomorrow or, at the very least, Wash's first and ONLY trip to the bullpen is to get Holland. Ogando & Oliver should be on a plane back to Texas RIGHT NOW! The way I see it the biggest culprit was Feliz because he's your closer. He's been getting away with falling behind hitters, walking batters, bringing the tying or winning run to the plate all series, but tonight that kind of inexcusable pitching with the game on the line caught up to him.
  6. If the Rangers can recover from this, all the credit in the world. What a bullpen meltdown!
  7. Absolutely the worst relief pitching in the clutch that I've ever seen. Ogando, Feliz, Oliver, Feldman, just awful.
  8. It was the old cliche about baseball being a game of inches. Kinsler's bloop hit falls just beyond the reach of the Card SS, then his steal barely beats Medina's perfect throw to 2nd. Have to admit that as an AL fan, I was losing hope watching Card pitching stifling the Rangers potent lineup. Hope their hitting picks up now they're going home to warmer TX. Interesting point made by A.J. Pierzynski afterwards about LaRussa's decision to lift 100 mph closer Jason Motte, speculating that JM might make a decision to move elsewhere after the season due to the perceived lack of confidence shown by the manager. Josh Hamilton added to the speculation as he was quoted that he was surprised to see the strikeout pitcher lifted in favor of "Rhodesy" who only throws "89" mph, implying that it was far easier for him to hit a game-tying SF in spite of his bad groin than to do so against Motte.
  9. Thanks for the link. Saw Ben Young there but only recognized his voice as he's changed much (as I surely have) since I used to visit WKCR and share my own private tapes on a few nightly broadcasts some 35 or so years ago. I taped many WKCR broadcasts back then and I have quite a bit of material that I've yet to convert to CD-R or any other digital medium, including performances by CIRCLE (Corea, Braxton), Gunter Hampel, Beaver Harris, Lonnie Hillyer, Paul Jeffrey, Lee Konitz, Jimmy Lyons, David Murray, Lester Bowie, Don Pullen, Sam Rivers, Cecil Taylor, Charles Tyler, Bennie Wallace, our fellow member Michael Weiss, a fabulous poetry reading by Amiri Baraka, and more. Dan G some years ago thankfully converted my tape of a terrific WKCR broadcast by JR Monterose with Sal Nistico.
  10. I know. Most of the movies I've looked up have been "DVD only." Not bad for a dying medium. Are you saying DVD's are dying because of Blu-Ray discs or is it due to other means of access, e.g., streaming, or a combo of the two? I've noticed lots of discount DVDs, quite a few of which I've copped, because I prefer tangible access, e.g., disc, notes, cover art, extra features only available on a 2nd disc, etc. Visual fidelity is excellent, a feature of which I suspect there exists the proverbial law of diminishing returns on the significantly pricier Blu-Ray editions.
  11. Felt the same way you did once I saw Proctor come in. He's done and will no doubt be dropped from the roster once the playoffs begin. But obviously lots of props for Ellsbury who really performed well both day and night and got the split for his team.
  12. QUOTE from above article: "However the jazz website Destination Out chose to see it another way: ‘Here is Wynton at his best, his most magnanimous, his most Whitmanesque. Here’s the Dean of The One True Path of Real Jazz implicitly telling a white guy from Wisconsin that by taking the craft seriously and studying the past masters, that this is his birthright just as much as a third-generation musician from New Orleans. It’s a wonderful moment.’" One doesn't have to be too cerebral to detect a ton of sarcasm from Destination Out.
  13. Rollins will be interviewed by Tavis Smiley tonight, Friday 9/23. Here in south Florida, the show will air at 12 midnight (technically making it Saturday the 24th). Happy viewing.
  14. I was actually hoping the Yanks would not take the 2nd game tonight for three reasons. One, I hate helping the Red Sox and would rather see the Rays overtake them for the WC; two, an early clinching of the division (that was inevitable anyway) with a week to go takes away a sense of urgency from the upcoming series with the Sox; three, I fear the Yankee starters will be so rested by the time the playoffs begin, they'll lose any competitive edge they may otherwise have had.
  15. Both the Yanks and the Red Sox have been sucking badly lately. Yet I heard some analyst yesterday - wish I could recall who it was - saying that the Sox have to root for the Yanks to start winning because it would mean for the most part that they would be beating up on the Rays with whom they have six games left. Presumably that would lock the WC for the Sox. But the way I see it, if the Sox start winning (including three remaining games with the Yanks) and the Rays beat up on the Yanks, then possibly the Sox win the division, the Rays get the WC, and the Yanks are knocked out completely. Unlikely scenario but preferable from a Sox POV, don't you think?
  16. As can be seen here the first Jet QB I witnessed live was Dick Wood.
  17. One thing that was re-emphasized today is that if a team cannot mount a fierce pass rush, Tom Brady will kill you. Tremendous passing attack, all receivers in on the action, and Tom on the money every time. As a long, long time Jet fan (went to my first Jet game in '63), I'm plenty concerned.
  18. Yeah, I'm quite surprised he apparently blew an 8th inning 2 run lead today, his stuff is so overpowering. Well, if the Yanks can beat the Mariners again tonight, a 5 game lead with 14 to go looks pretty strong even with games against the Sox and Rays coming up. Bard's blown several games of late for Boston. Dan probably has a better sense of what might be going on, but there definitely seems to be concern in Red Sox Nation about Bard's recent performance. Re: tonight's NY game against the Mariners, don't count on it--so far Jason Vargas is absolutely handcuffing the batting order. I think we have one hit through five innings or some such. And a grand total of 4 hits in 12 innings against a no-name staff. A real stinker of a performance.
  20. If Gene Harris made a disc with Scott Hamilton, play it and enjoy. Happy Birthday!
  21. How 'bout them Cowboys? I am one happy, and quite relieved, New York Jet fan!
  22. I'm betting (myself at this point) that Eduardo Nunez will be traded after this season. Yeah, he's a good young hitter with lots of offensive potential but his fielding is simply unacceptable. Cost the Yanks a game today, not the first time.
  23. That's the quietest 15-4 record I've ever seen. You look at it and your first reaction is "how did that happen?" Especially when the Yanks were dumb enough to send him down for practically all of July in order to make room for Hughes off the DL.
  24. Ironic that Salty got on base in the 9th inning by swinging at a pitch that hit him, sending the potential tying run to the plate. Ump blew that call big time. BTW, you really think that just because Cervelli clapped his hands when crossing the plate on the HR, that he was showing up Lackey? To me, it looked like a poor hitting 2nd string catcher was just happy he hit a dinger, that's all it was.
  25. Aside from the above films mentioned and the various criticisms and praise associated with Lee's "black" themes and characterizations, I think he is a very capable director when it comes to more standard fare, e.g., the drama thriller, "Inside Man", a film I quite enjoyed.
