  1. Back in 1973 when I lived in Brooklyn Heights, NY, I had the fortune of running into Joe Henderson who at the time lived in the same neighborhood. (He moved to the San Francisco Bay area about a year and a half later). Anyway, he came up to my apartment one night where my girlfriend at the time cooked up a wonderful Italian dinner. During all this time, I played quite a few of his sides wherein he appeared as a leader or sideman, the only exception being Pepper Adams ENCOUNTER album in which a couple of Joe's tunes are performed. Anyway to get to the point, when I said that my favorite ballad performance of his (at that time of course) was his feature on "A Lazy Afternoon" from Pete La Roca's BASRA session, he said that he himself preferred "A Search for Peace" from THE REAL McCOY. That obviously was a memorable evening. I still of course own the personally autographed BLACK IS THE COLOR LP that he brought to the apartment that night. Years later, it certainly beats a bottle of wine, that's for sure.
  2. I have both the original Candid LP and the Columbia reissue. While the latter does sound better to my ears, the Candid cover of the two black men sitting at the lunch counter with a grim looking white counterman behind him, together with a posted menu (e.g., Tuna sandwich - 40 cents), is just wonderful.

    Tommy Flanagan

I got this one as a review copy some time back when I did a few jazz reviews for an audiophile magazine. Anyway, it's a quartet session, with the added "horn" being guitarist Kenny Burrell. Highly recommended!

  8. How surprisingly refreshing to hear so many familiar sounds and hardly have to rack my feverish brain to come up with answers to the majority of these tracks. Here goes: 1) Sounds very much like a Sun Ra recording featuring John Gilmore. It cooks. What's not to like? 2) It's too easy to just ID these people. The first question here for me is the name of the piece as the group recorded quite a few beautiful originals like this one in the studio during the mid & late '60s; and the 2nd question is from what exact European locale was this done, I assume, during the group's tour in the fall of '67? 3) One of my favorite recordings by this artist which mystifyingly has not been reissued on a single CD in the U.S. AFAIK. I've had the LP for years. It certainly was on the OOP Mosaic box. Anyway, this track is the last on http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:ktdqoauayijv 4) "Street of Dreams" from this appropriately named album: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:ab6htr5lkl2x 5) Don't know. Can't guess. 6) Ah, I've collected this giant's recordings on LP and all the CD reissues I can find as well. Tune is obviously "Memories of You" from this album: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:4f867u5070jf 7) Another classic Blue Note side. The original on LP commands a healthy dollar amount. The pianist leader also appears on your first disc. Track #1 on http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:z0tvad7kt8w2 8) No idea. 9) While I was not familiar with this track, I was delighted that his style is so recognizable. One of the "Four Lives in the Bebop Business", this track with Max on drums appears on the 2nd disc of this box set: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00...9253865-4741506 10) Grooving organ. Can't name this blues piece but I'm sure it's been recorded by others. 11) Ah, "The Moontrane". Trumpet player is so identifiable in this live date led by my favorite vibes player. I think this CD is now OOP. Too bad for those who don't have it, it's great. Check this link: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:4vjteay14xd7 12) Organ and guitar swinging on "Samba de Orfeu". That's all I know. 13) Liked this alot. Thought it was a Gil Evans orchestration but on 2nd listening am not so sure. Tenor sounds Wayneish but not him, I think. Very, very enjoyable disc!
  9. JIM R:
  10. I'll bet all of his LPs I own that the tenor on track #15 is Booker Ervin.
  11. OK, sped through this 1st disc this morning. Recognized a couple only. Some initial impressions and positive IDs: 1) "Bebop", fastest version I've yet heard. Don't know the vibes player on this. Enjoyed it. 2) Monk's "Green Chimneys". Recognized this one immediately. Got to meet the pianist, a terrific person, on a couple of occasions since he coincidentally was the next door neighbor of my wife's cousin whom we visited on several occasions back when. Anyway it's the first track on this CD. 3) Again, Monk, this time a rather interesting version of "Ask Me Now" (love Steve Lacy's original recording of this). Sounds like something the AEC would do with the bass clarinet, hand clapping, etc. , but really have no clue. Dug it. 4) Percussion piece NMCOT. 5) Loved this but can't ID the tenors except to say that the first one has a distinct Rollins influence yet sounds like Joe Lovano. Liked the 2nd tenor also. Would want to pick this one up definitely. 6) Nondescript guitar. Not much interest here. 7) Boring 8) No clue. 9) Duke's 'Main Stem" live with vibes, guitar. Don't know who. Liked it. 10) More Duke but this time his later piece "Fleurette Africaine". I was banging my head on this knowing the tune but at first couldn't identify it and then listening to the vibes and rockish guitar, it hit me. Incidentally, the guitarist is a pure mainstream jazzer now but back then, he had a more eclectic style. Anyway it is the 3rd cut from this CD. Gotta jump. 13) I should care if it's anyone but Theo. 14) Thought I knew practically all the vocal renditions of this jazz classic and should at least recognize who's singing, but I don't. Not very good IMO. 15) I know Booker Ervin when I hear him, but I have no idea where this cut is from. 16) Jesus. I thought we were through with the funky organ stuff. Don't know, don't care. All in all however, liked the disc. Onto disc #2 tonight or tomorrow.

  15. Well, I do have the EPM CD reissue of the PEACE TREATY lp. It's a good session but on the short side. Here's a link to a Nathan Davis discography: http://www.nathandavisjazz.com/discography.html Among a few of my Nathan Davis LPs, I do have the JAZZ CONCERT IN A BENEDICTINE MONASTERY. That's a rare one, I would think.

  21. Those of us down here in jazz sparse southeast Florida who were looking forward to the Eric Alexander with Kenny Drew Jr. Quartet appearing in Broward on March 19th concert are hereby alerted to a significant change in booking. It appears that Mr. Alexander had a conflict in that he is supposed to appear somewhere else (location unknown) with Johnny Griffin. Claudio Roditi, the Argentine trumpet player (who I personally prefer to the more celebrated Latin jazz trumpeter Arturo S.) will substitute. KD Jr. will still head the rhythm section. Here's a site that lists all the upcoming South Florida Jazz bookings: http://www.southfloridajazz.org/jazz/schedules.html
