  9. You're right, it is easy and I will go there by way of Woody Allen who when Diane Keaton tells him in LOVE AND DEATH that someone else warms the cockles of her heart, replies: "Sure, of course, hot cockles!"
  10. How about a reissue of the great session TOTAL ECLIPSE? I've had this on LP for many years, never did get the CD when it was first issued (have a burn however). That is one terrific album, especially as it has Chick Corea before he was replaced in the group by Stanley Cowell. (Don't get me wrong, I love SPIRAL and MEDINA also).

  12. Uh, moving on. "Most influential jazz writers today"? Obviously the words "influential" and "stimulating" are not synonymous. Among those I find stimulating, Ted Gioia (e.g., "Jazz: The Imperfect Art") and Francis Davis (his most recent, "Like Young") are two who come immediately to mind.
  13. Between 1972 and '73, I saw Rollins several times at the Vanguard and Half Note in a quartet that included Albert Dailey, Larry Ridley and David Lee. Some of the greatest live jazz I've ever witnessed and that's saying alot. As for David Lee, he surely did disappear. I do have the JVC Tokyo date on LP. Since his live dates well into the early '90s could be terrific depending on when and where one caught Sonny, I had great hopes when I picked up this album some 30 years ago. And while Richard Palmer lauds it in his book on Sonny Rollins, I too am of the opinion that Rollins recordings post 1968 are just not as gripping or on the same level as previous recorded work, sad to say.

  15. DREAM ON. Just got this box set for a birthday gift. It's a very funny series circa 1990-1 that premiered on HBO and used quite a lot of old TV footage that would be inserted to metaphorically describe the main character's state of mind at key points in each sketch. OK, you have to be there to get the humor. Well worth it.
  16. January 26th. Recorded on this date: 1) 1960, Wes Montgomery, THE INCREDIBLE JAZZ GUITAR, 3 day session (Riverside OJC): 2) 1966, Sonny Rollins, soundtrack to ALFIE (Impulse), an essential recording: 3) 1966, Frank Sinatra with Count Basie Orchestra, AT THE SANDS (Reprise): 4) 1970, Alice Coltrane, PTAH, THE EL DAOUD with Joe Henderson and Pharoah Sanders (Impulse): 5) 1981, Ahmad Jamal and Gary Burton in concert, released on 2 CDs, one of which is shown here (Black Label): 6) 1987, Branford Marsalis' 3rd release as a leader, RENAISSANCE, 3 day session (Columbia):
  17. I do have the April '65 Half Note broadcast. Fantastic! A terrific opening "There Will Never be Another You", a ballad, then a closing "Three Little Words" in which host Alan Grant has to cut in to end the show due to time constraints. Whenever I hear Sonny wailing on that piece, I keep hoping that Grant will somehow not interrupt. P.S. You will be PM'd.
  18. Do you find the originals on THE BRIDGE, i.e., "The Bridge" and "John S." "dull and still-born"? This is some great cooking Sonny IMO. Can't see how any Sonny devotee can hear otherwise. As for the Jazz Standards by which I suppose you mean the NOW'S THE TIME session, a lot of them are great, e.g., "My One and Only Love", "My Ship", "Travelling Light", but the session as a whole is short changed by far too much editing. There are tunes where Sonny barely scratches the surface before there is an abrupt fade out, e.g., "I'll Be Seeing You", "Three Little Words" and more.
  19. January 25th. Recorded on this date: 1) 1956, Hampton Hawes, THE TRIO, VOL. 3 (Contemporary): 2)1994, Charles McPherson Quartet with Michael Weiss record FIRST FLIGHT OUT (Arabesque, 2 day session): 3) 1996, Myra Melford records THE SAME RIVER, TWICE (Gramavision, 2 day session): 4) 1999, MINGUS BIG BAND record BLUES & POLITICS (Dreyfus, 2 day session):
  20. I wouldn't say that I prefer his '60s work to the '50s output, but I would say that I value both periods very much. And I definitely feel that while his studio material in the '60s varies more in quality than the uniform excellence of the '50s output, his tone and the ferocity of his attack was at its peak AFAIAC in the later decade. I would highly recommend the following '60s recordings: OUR MAN IN JAZZ (RCA Victor), a live date at the Village Gate with Don Cherry, Rollins at this most "out" and tremendously inspired alongside Don Cherry (available on the RCA boxed set) ALFIE (Impulse) - to my mind, this is a neglected masterpiece. This is what jazz is all about. His solos on both takes of the title piece as well as "Street Runner with Child" are fantastic. I keep coming back to this disc time and time again. ON IMPULSE (Impulse) - his variation on "Three Little Words" (it's titled this way, but the melody is never stated) is overwhelming in its creativity and fire. Though a ballad, his long version of "Everything Happens to Me" is similarly gripping. THE BRIDGE (RCA Victor) - his 1st album back after a two year hiatus, there are some great renditions of standards, e.g., "Without a Song", "You Do Something to Me", but the highlights of the album are the two cooking originals, "The Bridge" and "John S." (also available on the RCA box). There's also some great bootleg material, e.g., Denmark 1968 (Moon label) but they are hard to find at this time. I also have a considerable amount of private broadcast material on tape, some of which is fantastic, e.g., trio dates with Max Roach in Europe in '66. All Sonny from 1949 to 1968 is essential IMO.
  21. Count me in. PM sent.
  22. January 24th. Recorded on this date: 1) 1962, Lee Morgan Quintet with Clifford Jordan record TAKE TWELVE (OJC): 2) 2002, Andrew Hill group begin recording A BEAUTIFUL DAY during a three night run at 'Birdland', NYC (Palmetto):
  23. January 23rd. Recorded on this date: 1) 1980, Stan Getz live at Cannes with Paul Horn and others: "Autumn Leaves", "Billie's Bounce", "Heart Place", "Kali-Au", "Chappaqua", "Time After Time", "Lazy Day", "Nature Boy". 2) 1998, David Murray, CREOLE (Justin Time, 1st of 2 day session):
  24. I had to wear a long sleeve cotton pullover today, since the temperature dropped down to the low '70s. Still dressed in shorts and sandals, though. B-) (I don't miss the northeast - where I'm from - especially at this time of the year)
  25. Indeed. I "grabbed one" from a fellow Org member off the "Offering and Looking For" topic just a few months ago.
