Probably the first time I opened the huge family's atlas depends on those fabulous steam engines with exotic names on the tender: Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe, Baltimore and Ohio, Erie, that I used to gaze in the toy shop. My forbidden dream was the Union Pacific's Big Boy, needless to say that I never got it. http://www.rivarossi-memory.it/Riva_Loco_Americane/Riva_Big_Boy.htm Along with John Ford movies, that was America for Porcy as kid. edit: I guess that my love for "The City Of New Orleans" of Steve Goodman, singed by Arlo Guthrie, lies in those old memories.

Reading all of Porcy's posts about listening to classical music, I have this romantic image of Porcy, based on watching lots of 1960s European films. I imagine that he lives in this totally modular white apartment in a Mondrian-looking building in Rome. There are all of these white modular bookshelves filled with books on modern art and leftist politics. He puts a Haydn LP - preferably on the Philips label - on a big, thick-based turntable and plays it through his tube amp. Then, he kicks back in his Eames recliner, on a flokati rug, with an arco lamp hanging over. On one side, there is a glass-and-metal Bauhaus end table holding a bottle of Sherry, and on the other side, a potted plant, preferably a monstera deliciosa... I will not the one that will contradict you, considering that I like the picture: My telephone is ringing, a brief conversation and I take the sigarettes and the dunhill lighter from the table, wear my reefer of brown leather, check out the 7.65 Beretta and go out. My Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1600 is waiting in front of the building. now spinning: Lalo Schifrin - Sade - Verve, stereo.

Some Haydn, some Tchaikovsky.

Another sick, and chic, appeal of vinyls is the rig where you play them, a nice TT/Arm/Cartridge combo spinning is definitely more arousing than a dull cd box.
-
I believe so Yes, though one could buy all the individual LP of Classic Records (if you can stomach the $$).
-
Today I switched the TT on at 10 AM and it's still going (9:30 PM over here). So I played tons of records: Haydn, Mozart, Leonard Cohen, Arthur Brown, Graham Bond, Ginger Baker Air Force, Blues Project, not sure I remember all.

'Classical' music since 1960 that you really care about
porcy62 replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Classical Discussion
Agree hundred per cent! Even illiterates like me should be allow to music, overall we live in a democratic society, aren't we? I liked very much Gavin Bryars' "The Sinking of Titanic" and "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet" and Michael Nyman's scores for Greenway's movies. Gorecki's symphonies and Zappa's "classical" works are among my faves, so is Arvo Part's works. -
Twisted by the Dark Side, young Sidewinder has become. Meditate on this I will.

I'd say NO to the question in the thread's title. I buy only vinyl of the old stuff, including those faboulous classic sets from Decca, EMI and DG. I used to compare CD and vinyl for the best sounding version, after a while I realized it was a waste of time, life is too short for spending it looking for the best sounding version of Kind Of Blue or A Love Supreme or Revolver, so much great music out there. Now I go for vinyl, whatever they sounds. I found that used records are more fun, pure and simple: looking for them, inspect them, cleaning them, for most people this is an hassle (easier to look for the best bargain cds on amazon and no bad suprises like scratch or pops and clicks), for me it's a pleasure. I still buy cd of the new stuff and of the very old stuff like Ellington and Bix because today's remastering of these classics is a huge step forward compared to the analog era's ones. The downloading is totally useless for me: I can't listen to music at work, I use the motorbike for commuting, so portable devices like iPod are out.

I am one on those guys who like to watch inside the gears, mainly motorcycles and hifi stuff. I open them up, clean them, inspect them, replace things I think are damaged or just not nice looking, you know the guys. Well, I never opened my VPI cleaning machine, I thought it was a too stupid, though useful, artifact: a (or two, if you have the HW17) small pump, a motor and a power supply, nothing that I could compare with a gorgeous tubed amplifier or a bike's gear. Today I did it, I opend up the RCM...and inside there was the DELTA!!! Damp, damp and more damp, the stupid plywood is going to rotten, lots of rust everywhere. In a word: a disaster. I know that a RCM's components are such stupid and simple that probably will work forever even in the DELTA, but... I decided I have to fix it. First I will dismantle the motor and the pump and remove the rust. I will left the case open and let it dry out, then I am going to treat the internal plywood surface with some sealing paint. After I 'll seal with silicon all the rough edge, internal and external. Probably after all this work, the reassembled RCM will not work, but HEY! It will be fun anyway! edit: I think it could be a good idea to apply some sheets of acoustic insulator everywhere to reduce the rumor.

Yeah, group A is tough. If I'm wrong about this, I apologize, because I'm in bed with a horrible cold and don't feel like researching, but I'm pretty sure.other than group G, group A is the only other group with three top 20 ranked teams. According to this blog page, the toughest group by average rankings is group H (it has three top-20 teams). Three Spanish speaking nations in that group too. Should be fun group to watch. Hopefully the refs will be able to speak/understand Spanish. All international ranking referees know the major insults in ten languages, it's chapter 2 of Fifa training.
