  1. Some "spy secrets" to make it worth her while?
  2. Sure that's not when Russes open their legs... ?
  3. Talked a bit about this UK group (sort of in same vein as Acoustic Ladyland and Led Bib) in the Cookers Thread. I'm going to try to check them out at the Vancouver Int'l Jazz Fest in June. They have filled out the rest of their June tour dates. Talk about a crazy schedule. I hope they don't regret it and they aren't totally burned out by the 28th. 22/06/2012 Rochester International Jazz Festival, Rochester, NY, US 23/06/2012 Toronto Jazz Festival, Toronto, CA 24/06/2012 Iridium Jazz Club, New York City, US 25/06/2012 Yoshi's, Oakland, US 26/06/2012 Ivories Jazz Lounge & Restaurant, Portland, US 27/06/2012 Victoria Jazz Society, Victoria, CAN 28/06/2012 Vancouver Jazz Festival, Vancouver, CAN 29/06/2012 Saskatoon Jazz Society, Saskatoon, CAN 30/06/2012 Ottawa Jazz Festival, Ottawa, CAN 01/07/2012 Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, Montreal, CAN
  4. I can't tell if Dusty Groove is slowing down on getting all the JiP discs or not. At one point they carried nearly all of them, including the Hors series. Anyway, I did just email them to see if they would be getting them in.
  5. Well, that sounds sort of interesting, but may depart too much from Messiaen to be of much interest to me. From what I heard in the sound clips, this other group is much closer to Quartet for the End of Time.
  6. Well, the Bulls are truly cursed and there really is no point in watching the next game. With DRose and Jo out and Deng in a deep funk (and presumably still bothered by his left wrist), they might as well pack it up. I'm certainly done watching the playoffs this year. It's not remotely enjoyable any more. I do want to point out that replays have shown that quite a few Philly fans were cheering and clapping when Joakim went down, maybe even the majority of folks in the stands. Nice one, assholes. There probably have been a few times when I thought a player deserved a hard foul, but I have never cheered when an opponent went down. Hope karma bites you on the ass and Philly goes 100 years before winning another championship in any sport.
  7. This just came to my attention -- Spooky Actions playing a quasi-improvised version of Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time. I'm sure it's at the usual suspects. Here it is on CD Baby: Spooky I'll most likely get it via eMusic. The idea is at least intriguing, though I don't know how much I will like it. Execution is everything. I did like Crossing Brooklyn Ferry by Stephane Furic, which was half jazz-half classical. I can't recall what was being improvised upon but probably something by Aaron Copland.
  8. Found a couple of boxes of items previously for sale that have accompanied me up to Vancouver! So a lot of stuff to sort and organize and put back on-line. In the meantime, I have some items that I haven't listed previously. $10 JATP Seattle 1956, 2 CDs, like new $7 Dave Brubeck Their Last Time Out, 2CDs some tiny markings on CDs not affecting play $15 Fawlty Towers Complete Remastered Collection, 3 DVDs, VG+ I honestly have no idea how I ended up with 2 sets of Fawlty Towers, but I suppose it happened in the move when I double ordered. My mistake, your gain. Shipping to Canada - $3 for 1 or 2 CDs, $5 for the DVD set (and any 1 of the CD sets) Shipping to US - $4 for 1 or 2 CDs, $7 for the DVD set (and any 1 of the CD sets) To Europe or Asia, - $6 for 1 or 2 CDs, $9 for the DVD (and any 1 of the CD sets) I'll try to get the remaining items up soon. 'Course I've been saying that for a while...
  9. I don't have any sympathy for the kid, but I sure question the judgement of the adult who put this on the web.
  10. I have a variety of CDs that have two or more sessions on them, including quite a number of CDRs where I had digitized my own LPs. Anyway, I am now trying to de-materialize my life a bit and rip these CDs before discarding them. I am finding that I can generally get the correct info on the tracks while ripping the first session. Then even if I move the folder to a separate hard drive, then update the second session info, I find that the original data has been over-written on the first session. I find this incredibly annoying, and I can't find the right setting so that the tags don't keep updating on me. I suppose I could use a different ripping software, but I think it must be a fairly simple change I need to make to prevent this from happening. I suppose I could directly edit the tag, but that seems to be so much extra effort. Any ideas on how to fix tags (or prevent them from changing after they have been ripped) would be welcome.
  11. I decided to start with Barometer Rising. Not enjoying it very much. I'm having a lot of trouble entering the mindset of characters from WWI. It's completely scandalous that this woman is having dinner with a known drinker, etc. The novel was actually written in the late 1940s but portrays this earlier period. But I am also generally stressed about things and maybe it wouldn't matter that much what I read, i.e. I would generally not be satisfied, so maybe it is the right time to go through a bunch of books that are only marginally of interest to me.
  12. I saw that too. What a bonehead. TNT just showed a post game interview w/ Rondo and he said he tripped and his momentum carried him into the ref. Yeah, right. First, I don't think anyone is going to buy that after looking at the replay. Second, he didn't have any business moving in to keep jawing at the ref after getting T'ed up. I think he's going to be suspended (esp. since he was already suspended a couple of games this season), but I guess we'll see. Just saw the last couple of minutes of the Clippers-Memphis game. They are saying it is the most impressive comeback (and chokejob) in the last 10 years. Clippers went on something like a 26-1 run to absolutely snatch that game away from Memphis. On the other hand, one of their players broke his left hand.
  13. As upsetting as it is about Rose, I am grateful for one thing. I was out of contact for a while while this happened, and all we knew was "Rose is down." I was halfway convinced that someone had headhunted him or intentionally undercut his legs or something. And that would have been ugly and controversial, etc. Anyway, it was nothing like that at all and it was just a freak injury. Just saw the end of the Atlanta-Boston game. Boston really looked out of it. Then with 40 seconds to go, Rondo got T'ed up, then bumped the official! And got tossed. My understanding is that it is an automatic one game suspension, perhaps even more. So basically Boston is done for the season.
  14. Was weak and got a couple of the Russian Historic Archive sets off of an eBay seller -- Yuri Temirkanov and Gennady Rozhdestvensky.
  15. The Outland volume is available for preorder on Amazon, and looks to be coming out next month: Outland I also noticed that the 2nd and 3rd Bloom County volumes appear to already be out of print with ridiculous asking prices, despite only having been published a couple of years ago. Too bad I didn't get them when I had the chance, but for anyone that's interested, Edward R. Hamilton has remaindered copies of the first volume for $11.95 - quite a good deal: Hamilton link Looking forward to the final Krazy & Ignatz volume, I have the first two and they are magnificent. Wow -- that is wild. I tried to get one of the signed editions but they kept cancelling it on me. I do have vol. 1-5 and have pre-ordered Outland, so I guess I'm set. Bloom County was one of my favorite cartoons and much of it still holds up. If nothing else it reminds me of some of the general craziness (and crassness) of the 1980s that I sometimes overlook when thinking about the past (through rose colored glasses).
  16. I think it was idiotic to leave him in, though the coach said that he felt the game was starting to slip away and he couldn't risk it. Obviously he regrets it now. Anyway, according to the latest reports, DRose tore his ACL and is out for the rest of the season. So it goes.
  17. Just what it says on the tin -- Thomas Kinkade and Cthulhu.
  18. I don't know my sports history, but is this the first time ever that no Canadian team has made it into the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs? It certainly seems rare.
  19. For the complete Herriman fanatic, Fantagraphics are going to reprint something called Stumble Inn, coming out most likely in Nov. Stumble Inn Apparently, this was going to be paired with Us Husbands in a book called Herriman's Hoomins {Humans}. That still makes more sense than putting Us Husbands in with Krazy Kat, but they must have had their reasons. They still seem set on doing the Krazy dailies, but it's hard to imagine this working out. Personally, I would be a lot more interested in a one volume "best of the dailies" with a CD-Rom of all the dailies.
  20. Talk about a blast from the past. Bloom County recently reached its 5th and final volume. The publisher has indicated that they will be doing separate Outland and Opus volumes. Not sure if there are enough Opus strips to justify a 300 page book, so they might have to fill it up with something (A Wish for Wings that Work?) Anyway, Krazy & Ignatz have come full circle and the entire Sunday run is in print thanks to Fantagraphics. I received mine in the mail yesterday. It is interesting that for a short period in 1922, Herriman was doing a full page Sunday sheet and a full page color sheet for Saturdays. The 1922-24 has two other super rarities -- Herriman's first comic strip Mrs. Waitaminnit and a full color Sunday comic called Us Husbands. Us Husbands is fairly interesting. Mrs. Waitaminnit is truly awful -- a one-joke premise (the wife's constant lateness always gets the husband into a jam) and it isn't well drawn either. I think for 95% of the public, a couple of examples of this would have been more than sufficient, but they are sort of taking the Verve approach I guess. Anyway, it's an amazing achievement to get this back out there, so hats off to Fantagraphics. I sort of doubt that I can afford a whole run of the Krazy dailies (and where would I store them anyway?), but I'll be checking out their next moves on this front.
  21. Well, here's a finger factory that might be of interest:
  22. Nowhere near as formative, but I have a very soft spot for the Stone Roses CD from 1989/90. It marked one of the few times in my life where I was cool and was a bit of a trend setter. I heard it from a friend in art school, instantly fell for it, got my own copy and spread the word.
  23. Looks like the Burning Dog CD can be found quite cheaply on Amazon.com, though the paired album is a bit pricier. Both are available on eMusic, so I'll probably go that route.
  24. I guess your name isn't Phil Schaap. False starts give him orgasms. I realize there is a place for this (maybe), but I do find it pretty annoying when some of the Verve CDs are so cluttered up with crappy false starts that you have to program your CD player around them. It definitely makes me reach less for some of these CDs to play for casual listening, which I think completely defeats the purpose of reissuing material. Similarly, my tolerance for alternate takes decreases dramatically after 3 versions of the same song. I was looking at some CD recently where there were 5 to 6 takes of each song. Blah. see here - a couple of complete takes, works for me! I'd basically forgotten which CD we were discussing. Somehow I did end up with a copy of Les Tricheurs, but I can't recall when or where, though the odds are it was Dusty Groove. (I still think it is dopey to include all the false starts.) If I were still in Chicago and DG got all in these hors series sets, I would probably eventually give in and buy them all. Out here, I'll probably have a bit more will power...
