  9. For me the Rivbea trio had a groove going that distinguished it from most '60s free jazz and also anticipates the groove of later trios like DKV and Romano-Sclavis-Texier. But it comes largely, I think, from the Ornette-Izenson-Moffett trio too.

  15. Consider also that Miles' estate is very much involved in rights, so that might be a factor affecting how things are being released.
  16. The only part of the Mainstream catalogue they seem to have given any thought to was Carmen MacRae and Sarah Vaughan. I don't know why they didn't lease any of them to someone like Collectables. There were a few really nice Charles McPhersons, Blue Mitchell, Roy Haynes... Columbia bought up the Mainstream catalog so they could own one album: the first Big Brother and the Holding Company album to add to their Janice Joplin catalog. They didn't really give a shit about anything else.
  17. They dumped Seth Rothstein a couple of years ago, who ran Legacy jazz for some time (and was with ECM before that). He was a smart guy who knew the treasures he had (he also couldn't convince the suits to do anything much with the great Mainstream catalog material they were sitting on). Now I don't know if they even have a dedicated jazz guy for Legacy. A lot of Seth's babies have gone out of print, like that beautiful Billie box.
  18. This google search can help you put it all together. The only one I have is the excellent Zeitlin-Friesen. tried that but it does not give me a complete list of all the cd's in the series. thanks anyway. Unless there's more than 10, I think by paging through the search you can find all individual titles.

  20. But I find the sound on the CD I have lacking--either too much compression or bad mastering.
  21. Fanne Fox Wilbur Mills Alan Young
  22. I am the Pete C who is the Pete C of Speakeasy, but I'm not sure what you mean. Is JSngry prone to bad puns? I was here some years ago. I appear to be back.
  23. I got mine from emusic, but I had gotten 75 free credits to re-up, and canceled after the first month (they keep inviting me back with offers like this). I'd already had most of the music dl'd from dime, but from an inferior cassette source. I always love Barron. I saw him quite recently in a solo concert right in my neighborhood at the Brooklyn Conservatory, and last year a fabulous duo w/ Mulgrew Miller @ Tanglewood. I only saw Getz live once, in early '75, when I was in college. A guy named Jack Tafoya had a great UHF show that he taped at Brooklyn College studios, and I got tickets because I was in Chuck Israels' jazz history class. The band had Dailey, Houston & Hart. I'm afraid all the tapes of the programs must have been lost. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1310&dat=19750525&id=IBIRAAAAIBAJ&sjid=_dcDAAAAIBAJ&pg=3050,6759463
  24. Interesting--I was thinking Boston early '50s. But this would be more intersting because both were well into their mature styles (Mariano's signature sound I think first appears about the time he recorded with Mingus--his stuff with Shelly Manne is moving there, but the earliest stuff is very different).
  25. I know he goes way back with Roy Haynes and Jaki Byard and was brought to Miles by Tony Williams. It would be fun if some recordings surfaced of Sam playing with Charlie Mariano.
