  1. Happy Birthday. What's MixUp in D.F.?
  2. Malcom Gladwell Eddie Gladden Dexter Gordon
  3. Any deliberate license with the facts is bad faith in a work of nonfiction, plain and simple. Perhaps a disclaimer, like Obama's, of composite girlfriends etc. can mitigate this, but otherwise I'd say that memoirists need to either come clean or write an autobiographical novel. Henry Miller's Tropic books were marketed as novels, and rightly so.
  4. Raul Julia Julia Roberts Chief Justice Effing Roberts
  5. Hagood sang I Should Care with Monk and was the Birth of the Cool vocalist. Apparently he had a local career in Detroit for many years after that. I remember some critic described his vocals as "mawkish." You mean the Booker T. Washingtonish character from Ellison's Invisible Man?
  6. Wikipedia shouldn't be a source for any serious researcher, but neither should any encyclopedia. The nature of the beast is capsule entries culled from other sources. But show me the Oren Bloedow entry in Britannica. I consider Wikipedia a good source for quick info; yes, there are issues, but not the same challenge of verifying the veracity of miscellaneous websites that may or may not have the basic information in an easily discoverable format. A "real" encyclopedia would have a fixed editorial board and contracted writers, so that issue would never arise. In the case of Wikipedia it's a signal that a particular entry should be handled with care, but there's still a lot of useful baby in the bath.

  8. I wonder how the author deals with Tizol's homophobia vis a vis Strayhorn.

  11. It'll be flagged eventually if it's undocumented or suspicious. You seem to be implying a level of mendacity that I don't see any warrant for.
  12. I remember when I met Dave one of his regular gigs was with blues singer Bobby Radcliff. So I just did a search and found this album from '85, with some "downtown jazz" all-stars of the day: EARLY IN THE MORNING (1985) A-Okay LP-1000 Bobby Radcliff: guitar & vocals Dave Hofstra, Brian Miller & Oren Bloedow: basses Bobby Previte: drums Wayne Horvitz: piano Philip Johnston: tenor saxophone Dave Sewelson: baritone saxophone
  13. Yeah. I forget the name of the bassist he was working with then, pre-Hofstra.

  16. Did Bird have his Cherokee breakthrough on steroids?
  17. Joel, I remember West Boondock. Another Joel used to have a regular gig there before I got to know him. The sample chapters didn't make me think this is a must read. Not every musician should get a bio. Yet I'd love to see a Joe Lee Wilson book because I loved his singing and liked him so much. Ditto Leon Thomas. Andy Bey would make a good subject for a bio on so many levels.
  18. He was especially instrumental in bringing European & American improvisers together. 8th of July 1968 is an amazing document. I also have an unissued concert from '68 with Pharoah plus McLaughlin & Sharrock on guitars. Not great audio, but wild stuff. I saw him a bunch of times in NY in the '70s & '80s. Happy birthday, Gunter.
