  2. Yeah, some years ago either Sarris or Canby wrote a piece about how his timing and reactions are straight out of Hope. I think Hope's classic from Paleface (or Son of Paleface) where he orders a glass of milk, is about to be lynched, then says "in a dirty glass" and gets back pats from everybody anticipates Allen.

  4. If I get to do the work I love until I'm 88, I won't consider my death a sad event. Congratulations on a life well lived, Von.
  5. Speaking of that nabe, my 2009 visit was my first time at the new British Library. As Pinter was a formative influence on me, it was great to see a marked up manuscript of his on display.

  9. If going from the states to London, it makes sense to check package deals on Priceline. When I went for Ornette's Meltdown in June of '09, I got an amazing deal (and it didn't require bidding): R/t airfare from JFK and 5 nights at a Holiday Inn Express for about $950 total, including taxes. It may have been a fluke, but it's worth checking. The hotel turned out to be in a pretty convenient location. The hotel calls it Earl's Court, but it's a bit further out, a short walk to the West Kensington or West Brompton tubes, and just a bit north of Fulham.

  14. Philips dvd players are easy to hack for region-free, and it's easy to find the codes online. I have one of those in addition to my LG blu-ray player, so I only use the Philips for non-Region 1 DVDs. And yes, a retailer who sells a region-free player has just done the hacking. The Philips models also have USB input, so you can play multiple formats from a USB stick too, but I think that's becoming a fairly common feature. Once the region issue is taken care of, the player handles converting PAL signal for display on an NTSC TV. They're not allowed to disclose that, as it would contravene the point of regional "protections," which seems pretty archaic and ridiculous a concept. I believe in most cases the players are manufactured region free and the region is then set based on where the units are shipping to.

  17. Is that true? I thought with the Blue Note material on the Mosaic Select and the Black Saint/Soul Note albums and boxes most was in print. I saw him a bunch of times with Mingus, starting in 1973, until he was replaced by Ford. If you compare his playing on the Haynes albums and Moves with Changes you can see how much more depth & lyricism he gained after working with Mingus for a while. Same can be said for Pullen, IMO. I don't hate his singing, but I prefer Frank Lacy on Devil Blues.

  20. I remember I was watching my brother's dog about 35 years ago, and I was playing Coltrane's Meditations. During one of Pharoah's screaming solos the dog put its ear up to the speaker and was transfixed!
