  2. Couldn't find a Twitter thread, so this'll do. So, Twitter is a great medium for freedom of speech, except for the fact that there's no context or depth, and except for the fact that there's no freedom of speech. http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/technology-blog/twitter-prompted-nbc-request-ban-journalist-critical-olympics-163604608.html

  5. I absolutely agree with you. Why more Christians don't get on board with that concept is beyond me. You simply cannot shove religion down somebody's throat...it has to be a personal choice. Well put. An atheist simply cannot be a Jewish believer. i don't know what you wanted us to understand when you replied to Pete C. "An atheist simply cannot be a Jewish believer." did you think he wasn't aware that the term 'atheist' means a person who thinks there's no God? 'cuz i assume he does know that. and i also assume that you know he knows that. what are you saying exactly? do you know? i'd like to know... not interested, eh? not surprised... Pete knew what I meant and that is enough for me. I have nothing to add. I just wanted to keep those embedded quotes going.

    So ask him.
  10. The Kenny Werner album is very good. I'm not a big Mabern fan, but I'll say one thing for him: he can make himself heard in a noisy bar.
  11. What we call suspenders in the U.S., you Brits call braces. So, are suspenders what we call garters? I always knew that what we call pants you call trousers, but I only recently learned that pants in the U.K. refers to underwear. I think I got my first pre-adolescent proto-hard-on (stress on proto) watching Elizabeth Montgomery on Bewitched.
  12. Jews are forbidden from proselytizing among "gentiles" (it's OK for the Mitzvah Tank to encourage wayward Jews to return to active worship), but anybody who chooses to convert and goes through the sanctioned training process is welcomed in principle (even if there may be naysayer indvidiuals). In most cases it's to satisfy a potential spouse or spouse's family who, IMO, has often bullied the person into conversion (refusal to accept a marriage without conversion is a form of bullying, no?). There are plenty of Scottish Jews. I knew a guy whose ancestry was Scottish Jewish, and he said, "I'm doubly cheap." Which reminds me of a Scottish condom joke... Can we have a rubber stamp made of that?
  13. If Monk had recorded Reflections for Black Lion they could have titled it Portrait of a Marmite.
  14. Maybe you could remove a letter.
  15. I guess Friday is just those 2 acts at the main stage. My flight gets in at 6:45. With luck I'll be able to catch at least part of Rollins' set. Since 1973, I've seen him over 20 times for sure.

  17. Just noticed the added word "believer," which was not my word. Perhaps Goodspeak could make commercials for the Romney campaign.
  18. Not a final schedule, but the lineup is now broken out by day: http://detroitjazzfest.com/12lineup.html

  23. It's primarily an academic freedom deal in principle and a job security deal in practice. As long as he can find a department whose faculty supports him, he can teach in that department. That's how Julius Lester ended up teaching in Judaic Studies at U. Mass after African-American studies would no longer have him.
  24. Yes, but relieved of his administrative burdens he can now devote his time to teaching ethics.
  25. Perhaps if her first name were Esther...
