  1. I highlighted the fact that it's a "folk etymology." If you click the link you'll get a more comprehensive discussion of the etymology.
  2. When I saw this on the home page: John Coltrane Side Steps Prestige 5 CDs still sealed by AllenLowe I wondered if the fact that they were sealed by Allen Lowe added to the value.
  3. They're now Fluxus collectibles!
  4. I suppose I owe you an apology. The inclination to correct others is indeed unbecoming. In my defense, I will say that I do check my facts. Were I to continually correct people with misinformation I'd justly be considered arrogant, annoying and, of course, intellectually suspect.
  5. Some people won't trust anything from Wikipedia, nonetheless, one can check the footnotes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivy_League#Origin_of_the_name Personally, I think schools with a high incidence of heroin abuse should be called IV League.
  6. Jealousy? Probably not even envy. I think Jim's got it. http://www.diffen.com/difference/Envy_vs_Jealousy
  7. Mike, it's good to have your participation here, but I don't think belaboring old animosities advances anything. For argument's sake, I'll take the generous stance that Goodspeak had a higher standard for innocent until proven guilty in case of Paterno than many of us, but he has acknowledged the Freeh findings, so if we don't give him a break on this, then nobody has the right to change their mind when confronted with overwhelming evidence to rethink their skepticism.
  8. Larry "Bozo" Harmon has expressed disappointment that "Bozo" has become a derogatory term.
  9. Columbia vs. Verve is day vs. night, and nobody has pointed out the flaw in the original question: why would anybody ask this question if they were familiar with a representative sample of both, and if not, shouldn't they get a sample set from each period before plunging into a complete set? Personally, I think she was at her best between those labels. Her voice and interpretations are more mature without the rough spots of the '50s. The Commodore sides are great, and a subset of the Deccas, but her live performances from the '40s and early '50s are sublime. I'm fondest of the performances with the sparest accompaniment. Let us all thank the web designer for the wonderfully eye-friendly white type on magenta background.
  10. My favorite Miles BFT comment is on this one: http://www.forghieri.net/jazz/blind/Davis_2.html Re: Buddy Colette, he says: "all those white tenor players sound alike to me" + two more http://www.forghieri.net/jazz/blind/Davis_1.html http://www.forghieri.net/jazz/blind/Davis_4.html He really digs Electric Flag on the last one.
  11. And many have said, if you put Astaire next to the Nicholas Brothers...
  12. Top track from the album "The Anthropologists Sing the Sly Stone Songbook": "Don't Call Me Negro, Caucasian."
  13. Maybe they should stick to football after all.
  14. Captain Midnight Peter Noone Angel in the Morning
  15. Let's Carl the whole thing Orff.
  16. Lars Von Trier Claes Oldenburg Hermann Münster
  17. The sound on Stuttgart is reasonable, and it's such a great performance.
  18. Does this mean you're now one of the stunned former ardent supporters?
  19. I don't see how that's a logical conclusion. Unless you're assuming that given the facts any human being would make the moral choice. I think there are plenty of precedents that would suggest otherwise.
  20. Caught Lee Fields & the Expressions Tuesday night at Ft. Greene Park (Brooklyn). Great show. Tonight: Neko Case & Charles Bradley at World Financial Center. I gave that one a pass because I needed a night off. I knew I couldn't make it in time for Mayall (whom I last saw at the Fillmore East--at the time one friend said, "Mayall's really old--37!"), and when I saw Guy at the North Sea Festival in 1998, and it felt like he was phoning in the show.
