  1. Did someone at Savoy respond to your e-mail, or did someone just mail to you the corrected CD and errata in response to your inquiry? Thanks! They never asked me to confirm I had a defective disc nor did they reply to my email enquiry. I just got sent the corrected disc 4 and erratum. Thanks! I just wrote to them recently after happening upon this thread - I should have addressed this matter a long time ago.

  3. Confession time: the last football game I watched was the Superbowl that the Falcons lost to the Broncos. I thought that Tampa Bay had a decent defense, Teddy Bridgewater had thrown a bunch of picks (i.e., one touchdown against five picks) in the previous two games, and the Bucs were playing at home. I don't know what the line was, but I would be interested to know. Of course, I am also biased by my dislike of the "other" (i.e., Bears, Lions, and Vikings) NFC North teams.
  4. Thank you all for the birthday wishes. I have been ridiculously busy with work and family matters as of late, but I hope that Columbus Day weekend I will finally have some time to listen to the Akiyoshi-Tabackin Select set that I recently bought.
  5. Has it been set up yet? If so, would someone please tell me how to access the pool for this year? Thanks!
  6. I hope that you had a great birthday, Hans.
  7. Do any of you know what is the overlap between this set and Membran's 100-CD set, World's Greatest Jazz Collection: Bebop Story? I found little discussion about this set on Organissimo - someone had provided a link to the track listing, but the link no longer works and I have been unable to find any detailed track listing for this set, which sells for $89.99 on Amazon. It's not likely that they are the same masterings. Membran has gone through some changes since those 100 CD boxes. The sound quality has improved significantly. Thanks for your insight!

Here's the listing for Bebop Story, if you have the patience to go through it: Bebop Story - Membran Thanks!

  10. Thanks! When you were up four games on me (and at least five games on everybody else) after Week 2, I thought that you were going to run away with it this year. Week 14 really was the key week for me. All in all, though, I'd much rather the Packers fare better in the playoffs.
  11. Stupid Jarrett Bush! He has a long history of making stupid decisions during critical plays, often during the playoffs.
  12. My predications are as follow: Wild Card Weekend: Green Bay over SF New Orleans over Philly San Diego over Cincy Indy over KC Conference Semi-Finals: Green Bay over Carolina Seattle over New Orleans Denver over San Diego New England over Indy Conference Finals: Seattle over Green Bay Denver over New England Super Bowl: Denver over Seattle
  13. Thanks, guys! After performing so poorly for so many years since 2006, I think that there is much to be said for not over-analyzing every game and just going with your initial gut instinct as to which team will prevail.

  15. I realize that we are both on the west coast so this is a few hours early, but I wish you all the best in the coming year. May your Browns finally find a franchise quarterback and make the playoffs.
  16. Two participants (NOJ and vajerzy) did not make picks for the game tonight (12/05) - Houston was favored.in every published line that I saw.
  17. That's fine to me- and if someone tells me who they picked after the the game started, I'll put it in. There's no money or prize involved so I hope that's ok with everyone. Aggie sent me his picks for the Thursday games a few days ago- he didn't have internet or cell service where he had Thanksgiving- I just put them in. Well, no, I'm sorry, but I think that if you try to submit a pick for a game AFTER the game has started, then you have missed the cut-off and you are stuck with the team that is favored for that game. I really do not think that that is harsh at all. Hell, I tend to make my picks on Tuesday night - I have until Sunday morning to change my mind (for almost all of the games).
  18. I completely agree with your assessment (I am interested in poetry, so I almost mentioned Shropshire, but I was uncertain as to whether it was a county or some other type of geographic region), but what very small percentage of the U.S. population do those Anglophiles comprise? If I asked all sixty of the college graduates with whom I work (and, yes, I realize that there are a lot of very bright people who do not have a college education as well as a lot of college graduates who are idiots) to name as many counties as they could in the United Kingdom, I doubt that I would receive more than a handful of correct answers.
  19. I suspect that most Americans would not be able to name one county in the United Kingdom let alone identify a county on a map by name. My parents were immigrants (Dutch father and English mother), most of my relatives reside in the U.K. (although I no longer write letters to any of them) and my knowledge of European geography is pretty strong as I am also an Anglophile and a World War II history buff, but I doubt that I could correctly name more than a handful of counties in the U.K. At the risk of drawing a good laugh, how about Devonshire, Surrey, Sussex, Ulster, and Yorkshire? I recall writing my English cousin in my youth and being a little dumbfounded by the length of her address. Of course, I have lived in California for practically my entire life and I probably could only correctly identify about one-half of the counties in my state. I am sure that I would do very well identifying European countries save for a few of those that comprised parts of what was formerly Yugoslavia. I think that the Brits' responses in the linked page above are quite good overall - most reflect a very good sense of humor if nothing else. I am a little surprised, though, that Hawaii was so often misidentified or not identified at all considering its location smack dab in the middle of the Pacific and its importance during Word War II. Then again, if my AP U.S. history teacher in high school could not be bothered to cover World War II about thirty years ago, then I cannot imagine that instructors (in either the U.S. or the U.K.) are doing any better today. By the way, Lark Ascending, what castle/ruins do you have pictured in your avatar?
  20. At the risk of sounding like a party-pooper (and, yes, I know, it's only a game for bragging rights), I think that, going forward, if someone fails to make a pick for a game before the deadline, then it is assumed that he/she would have picked the favored team. In the rare event that neither team is favored in a game, then you are simply out of luck if you fail to pick a winner beforehand. I do not think that this is a radical suggestion, and I think that, in just about every instance, those who have forgotten to pick a winner of a game have requested leniency to submit a late pick for the team that was favored. Does anyone object to my suggestion? (This is NOT meant to be some sort of jab at ANYONE who failed to submit a pick for any particular contest.)
  21. The WB Shop http://www.wbshop.com/home.do?ref=GGLWBHE&gclid=CKDih-ju-boCFcVQ7AodU3oAvQ is offering Band of Brothers or The Pacific on Blu-ray for $20.19 when you apply the coupon code ANYCODES5 at checkout. Shipping is free. Thanks to slickdeals.net for the heads up.
  22. I would have to choose the Nat King Cole Trio set (my first Mosaic) as I find almost all of the tracks to be of a very high standard - the first two discs of the set are especially strong. Runner-ups would include (in no particular order) the sets by Buddy de Franco, Art Hodes, Amos Milburn, and Shorty Rogers.
  23. The Mosaics were the Duke Ellington (1932 - 1940 Brunswick et al), the Louis Armstrong (1935 - 1946 Decca), and the Stan Getz Clef/Norgran (audiophile vinyl sounds SO good). It should take me some time to digest it all.
