Fresh Sound & Lone Hill Reissues Discussion
Kevin Bresnahan replied to king ubu's topic in Re-issues
Yea they even use the original art work, they really don't give a shit do they but methinks it's only going to get worse. Well, these are in the public domain in the EU so they can do what they want. At lease these releases are legal in the EU, unlike some of their releases. -
I saw George two weeks ago. The first thing I thought when he walked out was, "Oh my god - he looks so OLD". I had to look up his age when I got home. 75. Wow. I don't know why, but I thought 75 looked younger. The show was OK. Harold Mabern was the highlight. Mabes can still play his ass off. George seemed to run out of ideas and he seemed to struggle to hit some of the high notes. He certainly doesn't have the stamina he used to. It's like he runs out of breath. Maybe his circular breathing technique isn't working? He used to do at least two circular breathing solos. I think he only tried it once. To be honest, when I saw George 10 years ago, he didn't have the stamina then either. I think he's just gotten old. Kevin

If the game was during the regular season, I could see it. If the pass was catchable, even in a pre-season game, I could see it. But an un-catchable pass in a pre-season game? Totally unnecessary... and points to a particularly nasty person. Football has nothing to do with it in this case.
-
Stingley was paralyzed in a meaningless pre-season game on a meaningless pass thrown well over everyone's head with no chance for Stingley or any Patriot receiver to catch it. Tatum hit Stingley to hurt him. Period. In his book, he bragged about how he always hit everyone with the intention to knock them out. The Raiders DBs had a pool which they contributed to each week. To win the pool, you had to knock someone out. Tatum won it more than anyone. As Bill Lee said about George Steinbrenner, if hell freezes over, he'll be skating.

What live music are you going to see tonight?

George Coleman is playing at Sculler's Jazz Club in Boston tonight. I'm really looking forward to this. What could be better? How about Harold Mabern on piano! Kevin -
organissimo: 2000 - 2010
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Well Jim, you know the old saying... "You want to make a million bucks playing Jazz, start with 2 million". I'm sorry the economics didn't work out. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing you guys live at that dive in Somerville. I only wish I could've stayed longer that night because you certainly nailed that 1st set. Kevin -

Hey, they have some good guys working in that booth: -
BTW, I should add that it was my German friend who told me to stay out of Romania & Poland. I don't know if that was part of the reason he said this.
-
I hope it's better there than it was 15 ten years ago. I planned a side trip into Romania and I was told there was too much crime and that as an American, I would be a prime target. I was told to avoid Romania and Poland for this reason. Kevin

Atkinson woman may have been texting before fatal crash By J.J. Huggins jhuggins@eagletribune.com HAVERHILL — A young Atkinson woman may have been texting before a horrific highway crash with two tractor-trailers which took her life early this morning. "We are investigating (texting) as contributing factor," said state police spokesman David Procopio. Kelsey A. Richardson, 21, of Atkinson, was pronounced dead at the scene. Rescue personnel responded to the accident about 4:17 a.m. today on Interstate 495 north, just before Exit 51. Trooper Matthew Topping reported that a vehicle traveling northbound lost control and went off the road and struck the guardrail next to the left lane. The vehicle then spun back into the highway and hit a tractor-trailer in the right travel lane, the press release said. http://www.eagletribune.com/latestnews/x2114030378/Woman-dead-after-horrific-early-morning-crash This 21 year old girl went to grade school through high school with my daughter Amanda. She was observed texting while driving just before the accident by another driver. Please talk to your kids and tell them that texting while driving can have deadly consequences. Kevin

I have a Pro-Ject Debut ii and two Denons, a DP-300F and a DP-500M. All 3 have been fine but the Denon DP-500M is a great TT and I can give it a high recommendation. At the $300-400 price point, I would buy another DP-300F before I bought a Rega P1, an MMF 2.2 or another Pro-Ject. But what I'd recommend is paying a bit more and get the DP-500M.

Blue Note Deletion email from True Blue/Mosaic
Kevin Bresnahan replied to jazzbo's topic in Re-issues
Analogue Productions and Music Matters are trying to rectify that. Analogue Productions is releasing select classic Blue Note titles on hybrid SACDs (SACD & CD combined). Music Matters is releasing select classic Blue Notes that are not part of AP's program on XRCDs. I have heard several of both and to my ears, they are doing justice to the original masters. -

I've always been intrigued by Sabu's "Palo Congo". I love Latin percussion, but not exclusively. Is there enough musical content here to make it worthwhile or does it come across as a percussion fakebook? Kevin -
Blue Note Deletion email from True Blue/Mosaic
Kevin Bresnahan replied to jazzbo's topic in Re-issues
Just for fun, I figured out which of the deleted titles are not in my CD racks. Some are simply because I'm not that big of a fan (Grant Green) or because I think have enough of that artist (Jimmy Smith in a trio setting). Some I owned and sold (George Braith, Taylor's "Conquistador" and McLean's "New And Old Gospel") because I wasn't digging what I heard. So any comments from this list of CDs? Are there any that I really, really should have? Grant Green Blues For Lou (Connoisseur) Grant Green Carryin' On Grant Green - First Session (Connoisseur Series) Grant Green - Live At The Lighthouse Grant Green - Standards Jimmy Smith Bucket Jimmy Smith I'm Movin' On (w/Grant Green) Jimmy Smith - Straight Life (Connoisseur Series) The Three Sounds Live At The Lighthouse George Braith The Complete Blue Note Sessions (Connoisseur Series – 2 CDs) Bud Powell - Bud! The Amazing Bud Powell-Volume 3 (RVG) Cecil Taylor - Conquistador! (RVG) Bobby Hutcherson - Now! Sabu - Palo Congo Jackie McLean - New And Old Gospel (RVG Edition) Horace Silver - You Gotta Take A Little Love (RVG Edition) Horace Silver - United States Of Mind (2 CDs) Lonnie Smith - Turning Point (RVG Edition) Jack McDuff - Down Home Style Albert Ammons & Meade Lux Lewis - The First Day (compilation?) The Fabulous Sidney Bechet (compilation?) Sidney Bechet Runnin' Wild (compilation?) Andrew Hill - Pax (Connoisseur Series) Andrew Hill - Change (Connoisseur Series) -
Blue Note Deletion email from True Blue/Mosaic
Kevin Bresnahan replied to jazzbo's topic in Re-issues
So editing that down to "classic" Blue Note single CDs, there have been 128 titles deleted. Since several of them combine multiple titles into a single package, there's probably close to 150 classic-era Blue Note titles no longer around. BTW, during the timeframe of these e-mails, I only saw one title that had two versions deleted, and that was "Dial S For Sonny". -
Happy Birthday Kevin Bresnahan
Kevin Bresnahan replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Thanks again to everyone. This year I'm feeling particularly old, as I am celebrating my youngest daughter's high school graduation coincident with my birthday. This September, me & my wife will be alone again for the first time since 1989. Weird just begins to describe it. -
Next time you are home with some free time, please burn a cdr of it - my copy has a large booger in the middle and won't play. Do not send a regular copy. Sorry, I thought this was a PM. You sure you didn't buy this at Kohl's. That guy might still be at it!

Were there "moderators" back then? I think it was just Jim and his brother. There was certainly no J.A.W. which is the biggest difference now. Hans is doing a good job keeping the board the way Jim wants it.

Sonny Rollins Jim Hall Reunion June 12, 2010
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Jim Hall's playing the night before so he's in the area. I imagine "sitting in" means he'll come out and sit in the guitar chair for a song or two. I wish I could be there but I have a house full of family members for my youngest daughter's high school graduation party. I don't know whether to post a or a . I should be happy, but I'm feeling old. Kevin -

Artists you know well but have never really liked
Kevin Bresnahan replied to David Ayers's topic in Artists
I know I'm supposed to like them, but I still can't spin many of Andrew Hill's CDs without wondering why I bought it. "Point Of Departure" gets the most playing time, but others... not so much. Even "Grass Roots", a CD that I nearly held a party for on its release date, rarely makes it into the player. I think I've played "Passing Ships" halfway through twice. It's been a long while since I've spun "Dance With Death". I'll have to rectify that tomorrow. I think I'm learning though. I didn't buy "Pax" and I held off on both Mosaic Selects. -
I'm still kicking myself for backing out of the Jazz Cruise the year it was dedicated to the music of Gerry Mulligan, with the man himself on board. I had to back out at the last minute. I don't think Gerry did another gig after that cruise and I never did get a chance to see/hear him live. I still regret that.

If I put something up for sale and you added a post to my thread saying that 1) you think my price is too high and/or 2) showing a lower priced copy of the CD I was selling, I would be pretty damn upset. Think about it that way. Imagine if it was your sale. When you come right down to it, it's really none of your business. If a seller is asking too much, the market will quickly show him/her the error of their way. If someone thinks it's a good price, you're a bit of a jerk for telling them not to buy it. If it's more than YOU think it's worth, that's your opinion. If it bugs you that much, E-mail/pm the seller and tell him/her that there are cheaper alternatives. Hans had it right here. A "For sale" thread is no place for a discussion about the best price for a CD/LP.
