What live music are you going to see tonight?
Kevin Bresnahan replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Jeremy Pelt's bringing his quintet into the Regattabar tonight for one show. Should be a good one. Jeremy always seems to play hard no matter when I've seen him. Kevin -
My cellphone has a new wrinkle!
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Christiern's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
That makes sense, Claude. The sides are unaffected, but if you look at the vent-like part (bottom of photo), it looks like heat might have been coming out of those holes. Those holes look like they are for the speaker in hands-free mode. That is bizarre. Never seen anything like it. Generally, when the battery fries, the phone stops working. If it's working normally, it's likely that the battery did not fry. Maybe what happened is that it was transmitting at full power for too long. However, if that happened, I would think that the battery would die way before the phone "melted". I used to have a Motorola phone back in the AMPS (analog) Verizon days and it would get very hot if I used it in that mode for a long time. But the battery would die in about 15 minutes in full AMPS mode. -
The intro to "Saturday and Sunday" starts out with the Duh da da da daaa da duh duh for 15 seconds. Then the main part of the tune starts. At 10:14, after almost 4 seconds of rest, they repeat this sequence, and the tune runs out 15 seconds later. I assume this ending is what's been chopped off. Maybe a jazz faux pas, but I always called this repeated intro a "coda". Mea culpa. I agree that it's pretty easy to notice if listened to and I'm not excusing anyone from screwing up. But if they fix it, everyone should be happy eith that. Myself, I'm all about preventing something from happening again. So I'd mark up the master (which is what RVG used) to indicate that the first tune has large rests. Kevin
-
Cuscuna knows about it. I believe he has Rudy re-doing it but I haven't confirmed it. In case anyone is reading about this mistake and has never heard "One Step beyond", you should know that there is a coda at the end of "Saturday and Sunday" and this coda starts after several seconds of silence. I imagine that anyone not familiar with this tune might hear that large gap and assume "end of song" and press "index" on the mastering station. It's happened twice now with this particular tune so it's not only RVG's problem. I guess they should make a note on the master tape to let future mastering engineers to look out for this.

The reason "Motto Grosso Feio" is so scarce is that One Way Records wasn't supposed to even get that license. As I understand it, someone at Blue Note screwed up. Once their initial license ran out, Blue Note realized the mistake and wouldn't give them an extension. To make matters worse, Blue Note didn't see a market to reissue it themselves. FWIW, it's not may favorite Shorter date for Blue Note so I can understand why they haven't made it a priority reissue. I doubt it would fly off the shelves. Hell, when it was in print at One Way, it didn't sell well. If it did, One Way Records might still be in business.

I was not in favor of these new reissues that went back to "LP order". The original CDs, issued in session order, sounded better to me and offered better value. As a Blue Note customer, you should complain about it to them. The complainers are who got it changed to "LP order" in the first place. From what I was told, these people also wanted NO bonus tracks either. Just what was on the LP - nothing more.
-
Huh. I guess I was wrong. Weird how the Japanese reissued it as TOCJ-4095 when it was never issued as BST-4095 originally. It was first issued in the 80's as a DMM LP. They're usually sticklers for originality, right down to the correct catalog number.
-
That was the Holy Grail for many years, wasn't it? How about those Leo Parker TOCJs? They're pretty rare...or so I thought? One's on eBay. There was only one Leo Parker TOCJ. "Rolling With Leo" was only issued on CD in the US. Those two US CDs by Leo Parker are hard to find even today. I almost included "Let Me Tell You 'Bout It" in my list of rarities above, but since it's reissue as an RVG, it's been in several used bins around here. No "Rolling With Leo" discs though.

What vinyl are you spinning right now??

Now playing: Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else (Classic Records 180 gram stereo) Up next: Stan Getz - Voyage (Blackhawk) -
Don't even think of blaming Cuscuna or Blue Note for this. They went back to "LP order" after a few people complained about the shuffled order of the CDs. I think it was stupid and so does Michael, but Blue Note capitulated to a few vocal complainers. It was a small number of complaints, but it was enough that they listened. There's a thread around here somewhere where we debated it. A few of the more vocal complainers contributed their thoughts to that thread. FWIW, they also changed the order on the RVG/Connoissuer CDs of "The Turnaround", "No Room For Squares" and "Straight No Filter". The original CDs re-arranged the music by recording session and to my ears sounded better that way. The new RVG/Conn discs go back to LP order with bonus tracks sprinkled around. It's weird with the change of pianists.

Just finished: Coldplay - Viva La Vida Now playing: Miles Davis - The Complete Blackhawk Sessions disc 1 (Mosaic) -
The first 8 tracks on the disc were released on the 45 Sessions Mosaic & Blue Note reissue. Leaving only Cry Me A River and Uptight as the orphaned tracks. Yeah, and I still think Michael Cuscuna goofed up when he didn't put those two extra tracks onto the Connoisseur CD of the 45 Sessions. I forget his exact reasoning, but I doubt those tracks will ever see the light of day on CD again.
-
Oh yeah, this is definitely a rare one. So are the other two or three that came out at the same time. John Hardy's "Tired" and the one or two Ike Quebec titles. I've only been able to get an original of "Tired". I gave up on the others. Last one I saw on eBay went for over $50. Too rich for my pocket.
-
Well, I've never heard of it and I've heard of many. I'd have to say it's pretty rare.

Assuming we're talking about the actual CD itself and not the music on it... James Newton - Romance And Revolution Leo Parker - Rolling With Leo (non-RVG) Jimmy Smith - Cool Blues (non-RVG) Hank Mobley - Straight No Filter (non-Connoisseur) Hank Mobley - Quartet (Complete) (non-RVG, Japanese-only issue) Andrew Hill - But Not Farewell Jerry Bergonzi - Standard Gonz Not "Blue Note", but titles issued in Japan on their Something Else sister label which usually showed up in the US on Blue Note. These never made it: Renee Rosnes - Face To Face Joe Lovano - Tenor Time I agree that Belden's "Turandot" is impossible to find. I got my copy from one of the musicians who played on it.

Received phone call threatening legal action...
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Shawn's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Ah, here's the story I read... Dealing With Old Debt. The important thing to note is in that little box in the middle of the page: What a debt collector cannot do: • Call before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. • Talk to anyone but you (or your attorney, if you have one) about the debt. • Threaten to garnish wages or seize property unless they actually intend to do so. Garnishment is illegal in some states, and in others requires a court order. In many cases, property seizure is not permitted. Check with your state attorney general's office or state consumer protection office to find out what is legal in your state. • Threaten to sue unless they are actually taking legal action. In some states, third-party collection agencies may not sue. • Threaten you with arrest or jail. • Use obscene language. • Annoy or harass you with repeated calls. • Call at work if you have asked them to stop. • Falsely claim to be an attorney, a representative from a credit bureau or a member of law enforcement. It sounds like these guys are in violation of a lot of these. -

I read an article about this new breed of debt collectors. Apparently, these scumbag companies shop around and buy old debt, even debt that's been forgiven (written off). The hounding is done to try and get you to admit to owing the debt. The minute you admit that, somehow the law updates it to "current" debt, meaning it's no longer off the books. The minute you agree to pay them a penny, they have you for the whole amount, regardless of what they say up front. It's a scam and they've been losing in court. You can't deceive someone like that. Next time they call, hang up. EDIT: I remembered the last part wrong. They can't collect old debt, even if you acknowledge it, if they are deceptive about your legal responsibilities. Guess I've been conversing with a few too many non-English speaking people lately. I have been finding myself doing these little explanations more often... might be all the phone calls to China. You find yourself speaking like you're in first grade. -

This is not "Circuit City" any more. Anything that's happening there is being done by the liquidation company. There are several big ones out there that do this for store after store. They are not even aware of what the store sold stuff for in the past - it's all about "it lists for". 20, 30, 40 even 50% of list on some items is more than what the same store was selling the item for before the liquidator bought them. Liquidators don't consider "last year's model" either. Do yourself a favor and stay out of these "Going Out Of Business" sales. You'll never get a great deal and you're SOL (Shit Outta Luck) if the item dies later. -
It certainly is. That particular disc is off to Slovenia as soon as I can get the shipping costs for the buyer. Kevin

by the Jesse Jones (Jr) who's Melton Mustapha's brother and made that alum "Soul serenade" for Contemporary? MG Nope - and your post got me to look again at the cover. It appears I added and 'e' to her name. It's Jess Jones and the Jess is short for Jessica. Her website has some music samples. On this CD, the band is Jessica on tenor sax, Tony Jones on tenor sax, Trevor Dunn on bass and Elliot Kavee on drums. BTW, I also just noticed that this CD is very faintly autographed. I received this disc from Jazz Corner many years ago and just don't ever spin it. Kevin
