  1. The stuff on Brunswick would be prime Mosaic material. a good part of it has only been issued on ep or 45 rpm, and the lp on Brunswick is a tough one to find. All of it is first rate material, very much in a Hermanite vein. Contemporary has only issued the live big band material. "Launching of a Big Band" is another great lp, a studio recording which has not been on cd. I'm partial to the quartets with Terry Pollard. She was a fine pianist, and she and Gibbs had considerable empathy as musicians.
  2. Duke Ellington "1939" (Smithsonian label)
  3. Bob Brookmyer, disc 3. Gosh, what a swinger Al Cohn was. My kids gave it to me for my birthday on Sunday. What great kids!
  4. Been there lots of times, I'm afraid. My latest was the Ellington V-Discs on Collectibles, 3 discs for $8.99. I've scored some nice OOP stuff in the past such as the Stan Getz Nobody Else But Me, the Mulligan Japanese Emarcy disc for 8.99 and some of the Helen Merrill titles (but I just missed "Date with the Blues" last week. My notify list runs 2 pages at the moment, but it's been longer!
  5. Warne Marsh - Sax of a Kind, Hot Club label. DMM pressing, sounds really nice.
  6. I've got a gig on Saturday afternoon (not many of them lately, so wahoo!), then my parents arrive from NC for my son's high school graduation. The balance of the holiday will be spent with them.
  7. Can anyone tell me if the Nat Pierces duplicate the Zim lps? Also, I can heartily recommend the Buddy DeFranco disc. An excellent swinging live performance.
  8. Mulligan CJB, disc 4. Long live Bob Brookmeyer!
  9. Hi Guys I remember a lot of you from the Blue Note Board (I was "woodymaggie"). I thought I come over and dip my toe in the water. Pete
  10. Buck Clayton's Jam Sessions on Columbia. The Terry Gibbs-Buddy DeFranco Tribute to Benny Goodman and Kings of Swing. "Swing Reunion" on BOMC - Red Norvo, Benny Carter, Remo Palmieri, Freddie Green, Teddy Wilson, George Duvivier, Louis Bellson. A little known session that really grooves. Worth looking for.
  11. At one time I owned the Tristano Memorial Concert box and I was less than impressed. The Warne Marsh tracks were brilliant, and the Sheila Jordan set was great, but badly recorded. The rest of the "artists" seemed to range from dreary to completely off-the-wall. I soon sold the lps after burning the Marsh tracks onto cdr. I seem to remember Liz Gorrill as being quite dreadful. Gary Foster is a fine player. His albums on his Bosco label are excellent.
  12. The album with Roy Eldridge "Comin' Home Baby" on Pumpkin label has long been a favorite of mine. It's a live date, a real swinger. A bonus is Dick Katz on piano.
  13. Roy Eldridge - Montreux '77. NHOP smokes on this one.
