Was there a specific provocation by LF that prompted Muggsy Spanier to write "Feather Brain"? Or was Muggsy just reacting to LF's general 'moldy fig' stuff? Probably just an honest reaction to Slick Len. Don't know the real answer. Someone else probably will.

As long as they play ok, stop worrying and enjoy the music.

OK. Played the game for real and there are supposedly 14 other Paul Secors out there. -

There's gotta be a bunch of 7/4s around this country. And they're named David Beardsley. Check this Secor out. Must be a very distant relative. And I plan to keep it that way. -

Stupid DJ. There are damn few intelligent ones. When my wife and I got married, we had a dj (her choice) and a jazz trio (my choice) at the reception. I asked the trio - good musicians, including one very good friend - to play for over half of the afternoon. My wife informed me later that the dj told her that I was ruining his reputation by keeping him on the sidelines.

Some thoughts: If the Yanks make the playoffs, pitching will be the big question. Wang has had a good seaon, but occasionally has a horrendous game. Pettite is pretty dependable 2/3rds of the time - not so great the other third. The Rocket looked good last night, but who knows about his arm or the rest of him from game to game? Hughes and Kennedy are rookies - Kennedy with three starts, I believe. Who knows what Mussina has left? - not much, from the looks of things. The bullpen, after Joba and Mariano is very questionable, & the Red Sox have gotten into Mariano's head. He pulled it out last night, but I've never seen his control so out of control. Ah, well. The Yanks have to get to the playoffs first. The Sox will be there, but their pitching is questionable also. Beckett is solid, but after him, Dice-K and Schilling are 5 to 6 inning pitchers. That wouldn't be all that bad, but it appears that Francona has lost some faith in his bullpen. Couldn't believe that he left Schilling in for so long - especially to pitch Jeter that late in the game. Can't remember the exact stat. - they have it last night - but I think Jeter's hitting over .400 with men in scoring position and 2 outs - and that's been pretty steady all year long. If I were a Sox fan, I wouldn't have liked seeing a tired Schilling pitching to Jeter in that spot. The good news for the Sox is that they have enough a lead that Francona will be able to give his bullpen (& starters) some rest before the playoffs begin. These Sox/Yanks games take too much out of me. Can't imagine how drained the players and mangers must be. I wonder if both teams will have a letdown after that series. The Sox can afford at least a small one. The Yanks can't.

My wife's father brought us together. I knew him as a customer at the post office where I worked, and one day ran into him at a local supermarket. We exchanged greetings, and he said, "You know, my daughter thinks you're a nice guy." I'd always thought that his daughter was attractive so I decided to call her and ask her out to dinner. She accepted and we've been together since then. The funny thing is, her father probably didn't mean anything by his comment. My wife told me sometime later that he had once made a passing comment, "That man at the post office seems like a nice guy." And she had just answered' "Yes, he does"', never thinking anything about it. It may have been unintentional, but he got us together. -
How 'bout Pee Wee and Russell? I know, that's pretty bad. Of those previously suggested, I'd vote for Sam & Dave, with Al & Zoot running second.

If RVG hadn't been there first, Hoffman wouldn't have any Blue Notes (or Prestiges) to remaster.

Reading the posts on the Hoffman Forum, it's obvious the these people (with the exception of Rooster_Ties) worship at the altar of Saint Steve.

Cliff - If I hadn't heard of Count Ossie, I'd have thought that you were pulling a Jim Sangry on us.

Don't you have the wrong bald guitarist listed here?

Haven't seen Dmitry's name around here for some time - last time he posted was in April. Did I miss something?

I can't speak for anyone involved, but this is intended as a limited edition audiophile-targeted product... so to complain that it's then limited seems rather silly. EMI certainly doesn't want this product to compete with theiir CD sales, so they likely require it being targeted to another audience: those few who still spin vinyl. Vinyl is a tough enough sell to the general public, so many of the LPs pressed these days are targeted to the audiophile... hence the 45 rpm pressng, the thick vinyl, the limited numbers, etc. Yeah, it's a "collectors" product, driven by a certain business model. I'm not sure you can blame the guys that master it any more than you can blame Ron McMaster for Blue Note's CD reissue series. Personally I wish these were cut at 33 and dropped in price, but I'm not really the market for them. I realize that "EMI doesn't want this product to compete with their CD sales". And it doesn't - it competes even less than a Mosaic box does. I was just questioning who set the limitation. As far as Ron McMaster goes, I don't see Blue Note trying to sell CDs off his name. On the other hand, I'll bet that Rudy Van Gelder has had some say in what he's done. And I bet that Hoffman & Gray do also. Don't want to get into any kind of craziness over this. I probably won't buy any of them, anyway. I'm just curious if anyone knows who set the limitation on this series of BNs.

Hey, if you can't decide, you could always buy a Cecil Taylor record.

I'm curious about the "limited edition" status of these Hoffman/Gray projects. Is the limitation set by the company who owns the masters - in this case, EMI - or by the record company leasing the material? The reason I'm wondering is that if it's the latter, it seems that they're doing so to create a cachet product - "You can own one of a only thousand copies pressed." (I'm guessing that's what it will be, as that was the limitation on the Prestige/Riverside/Contemporary/Fantasy 45 reissues.) I can understand the record company doing that, since they want to recoup their investment and more as quickly as possible. My beef is with Hoffman and Gray. According to what I've read, they're supposed to be music lovers. If they truly believe that their presentation is the "best", why do they go along with a limitation of 1000? One would think that they would want to present their work to a larger number of people over a longer period of time. If these are truly the best sounding Blue Notes, shouldn't more than 1000 people hear them? I realize that Hoffman and Gray don't own the record company - tho I've never heard of Music Matters & for all I know maybe they do own a piece of it - but their reputations mean something and they must have some pull - Music Matters is using their names to sell this project. Why couldn't they use their influence to increase the limitation, lower the prices, and make their version of the music available to a wider audience? One would think that they'd want more than 1000 people to hear what they've done. As I said, I don't know who sets the limitation. I do know that Mosaics are limited, but they've been limited to from 2500 to 10,000 IIRC, and are generally available for at least several years before their time limitation ends. If EMI has set the limitation at 1000, I stand corrected. If Music Matters set the limitation to create a cachet item - and Hoffman & Gray went along with it - that sucks.
