    Jim Hall

Whatever one's opinion of Jim Hall, I think you might get more than a few differing opinions about him being the "'father' of modern guitar."
  3. Snipes probably needs the money to pay off his tax debt. Hope the Monk family isn't as desperate.
  4. Very rare Mosaic. Only one of these was sold, I believe.
  5. Has anyone read/looked at this book? From descriptions I've read, it's evidently filled with rare photographs of the S.F. jazz scene.
  6. What's better - the covers or the music?
  7. I hope that all of us can have as much life in us when we're 80 as Mr. Weston does.
  8. Thanks for sharing this, brownie.
  9. You might want to include the two sides with vocalist Frankie Passions, "Especially to You"/"Nobody Knows".
  10. Ben Webster Quintet: Ben at the NuWay Club - October 5, 1958
  11. Actually, Jazz at Massey Hall (1953) did make the list, but basically you're correct. A compilation of ignorance - at least IMO.
  12. Louisiana Red Sings the Blues (Atco)
  13. M.F.K. Fisher's essay "About Looking Alone at a Place" from As They Were
  14. Sonny Rollins: Now's the Time! + 2 other versions of "Four" from 1964 on RCA
  15. Haven't heard those - will have to keep an eye out. Claude Lawrence is on the Sirone Live LP (along with Denis), but gets far too little solo space. Yeah - Claude Lawrence's playing wasn't well served on the Sirone recording. The two trio recordings are much better. Claude Lawrence is a fine alto saxophonist and he, Morris, and Charles make up a very fine trio. I like Lost Art/Hidden Treasures a little better than Presenting, but I think you'll enjoy either one. Cadence has both titles.
  16. Cooled off today - 80ish - and looks as if we may get some rain. We can use it.
  17. Two very good recordings with Claude Lawrence, Wibur Morris, and Denis Charles: Claude Lawrence Trio: Presenting (CIMP) Lost Art/Hidden Treasures (New Fountain) and an Art Ensemble recording that was done as a trio: Tribute to Lester (ECM)
  18. Indeed. Brook Benton did have a great voice. Sadly, by the time he died he was almost forgotten, even by those who heard him in his prime.
  19. Happy Birthday! Glad to hear you're enjoying your day.
  20. No followup yet to Sempé's 'Les Musiciens'. Would love to see that too. I see Sempé from time to time when he cycles around my neighborhood. I may try to stop him next time I see him and ask If you do speak to him, please give him my thanks for his drawings. He's a wonderful, masterful artist.
  21. I'd like to see a collection of Jonathan Williams' slides of the gravestones/monuments of the famous and less famous. If you read his essay "Paying Respects" in his collection, Blackbird Dust (or read it, as I did, when it appeared in The New York Times in 1976), you too may want to see it. A new book by Andrew Sarris A complete collection of Guy Davenport's criticism A followup to Jean Jacques Sempe's The Musicians - Perhaps he has done another book of drawings of musicians. If so, I haven't seen it.
  22. Ornette Coleman: Broken Shadows
  23. I've always liked Carla Bley's Dinner Music - Bley, Rudd, Mantler, Carlos Ward, Bob Stewart + Stuff - good pop music. I met Richard Tee some years ago. He was mailing something at the post office where I worked. He came across an open, friendly guy - seemed pleased that someone recognized him, or at least his name.
  24. No, not at all. It just seems that the % of jazz musicians on a lot of Greer's dates is a lot higher than normal. But maybe that's just my perception? You could be right. That was just my impression, but I've never actually done a thorough discographical search. If there is a higher % of jazz musicians on Greer's dates, it could be due to the Millinder influence. He may have had more jazz musicians in his recording bands - don't know if those bands were the same as his touring bands, but I'd bet they were very similar - than most r&b bands of the day did.
  25. Lon - Very best wishes to your wife and yourself, and a very happy birthday to you!
