  1. IMHO the best Bartok and the rest are dandy. I love this set. He was one crazy mf. I listened to the Bartok Solo Violin Sonata this afternoon. To my (admitedly uneducated) ears, he could really wail. I kept it in mind and ordered it because of an old post of yours about the Sibelius Violin Concerto. Glad I remembered.
  2. The Art of Ivry Gitlis (Vox)
  3. Happy Birthday, Chris!
  4. Miami is so old & beat up, I hear Riley is going to be a player coach.
  5. Thanks for posting your story Chris. It made me think about the adventurous spirit and even a certain kind of bravery that many immigrants to this country have. If my ancestors hadn't had some of that spirit, I wouldn't be here.
  6. Addendum to this thread: How often do you listen to your most unusual recordings?
  7. Your fingers will wear out before that happens.
  8. Just checked the timing on the CD - 74'10". Wouldn't three additional minutes have fit in? I've tended to think that folks are too harsh in their opinions about Orin Keepnews. Now I'm not so sure that I don't agree.
  9. Roy Eldridge - the 1960 Swingin' on the Town date
  10. Agreat one! (& no one here - including me - ever mentions it.)
  11. Finally found my LPs of Jazz Workshop - thought I had sold them. Listening to the LP version and the CD version, both Charlie Rouse's solo and Monk's solo have been edited on the CD - at least that's what my ears tell me. Very strange, since the premise of the CD was to present the Blackhawk recordings without edits. Also, the first CD - on which that version of "Midnight" appears - runs about 73 minutes. Wouldn't the extra three minutes that were edited have fit in?
  12. I realize that it's not a contest, but I can't see anyone topping you, Rod.
  13. Joe - I'm truly sorry to hear what happened. Never had this happen to me (knock wood), but from what others have written it seems that getting over the violation is much more difficult than adjusting to the loss of things. I hope that both of you will be able to take care of yourselves/each other and recover from this.
  14. The Muhal Richard Abrams Orchestra: Rejoicing with the Light
  15. I don't want to come on like a radio fundraiser, but this is a great place, and we should all do what we can to keep it going. Jim took a lot of us in when the BN Board folded, and I think that we should help him (and ourselves) out now.
  16. I'd like to contribute via check, too. Where do I send it? PO Box 16129 Lansing, MI 48901-6129 Check payable to Jim Alfredson
  17. Best birthday wishes to you!
  18. Just wrote Jim a check - hope that works too. It's going in the mail in about half an hour when I go out. Haven't contributed in a while & it felt good to do so.
  19. Tchicai is black; he's of Danish & Congolese heritage. He's of Danish & Congolese heritage, so that makes him black? - whatever that might mean. Most people would see me as white, but I wonder what would show up if I had my DNA tested for a genetic profile? Perhaps if everyone everywhere had a genetic profile test done it might start a lot of folks thinking, and perhaps change some thinking. Not intended to be racist... jeez. I know that, clifford. Didn't mean to single you out. Just wanted to turn the thinking of the thread around a bit. Probably shouldn't have posted anything, as it's a very, very, very complex subject.
  20. Lazaro - Thanks so much for this program. I don't know whether it was the interview or your choice of Muhal Richard Abrams' music, but I've never before felt the connection with his music that I've felt tonight. First listen tonight to your show. I'll try to catch it more often - unfortunately, I'm usually asleep weekdays when you're on the air.
  21. You missed it this time, but it will probably come around again, and next time you'll know to grab it.
  22. I've listened to A Sure Thing fairly recently and recommend it.
