I drove north to Austin this afternoon and listened to two transistor-based systems @ 2 Austin stereo shops that still feature vinyl and turntables. I purchased The Great Jazz Trio's (Hank Jones/Richard Davis/Elvin Jones) new LP on 88 Records - SOMEDAY MY PRINCE WILL COME to audition the new amps. At the first store, I listened to Rega P7 and P9 turntables w/ Dynavector moving coil cartridges and a Dynavector phono preamp through a Naim line preamp and Naim amplifier and Neat speakers. Elvin's contributions rocked, but I very much had the impression of electronics - VERY inorganic - it interfered with the music, which is what we are all about. At the second store, I listened to a Reson turntable and moving-coil cartridge through a DNM preamp, a Crimson amp and passive ATC speakers - much more musical, more like my late lamented SORO se. Great LP , by the way.

Slightly off topic, I traveled north to Austin and picked up a new LP @ Waterloo Records - the Great Jazz Trio (Hank Jones/Richard Davis?Elvin Jones) SOMEDAY MY PRINCE WILL COME, a Japanese pressing recorded in 2002 and released on the 88 Records label. Because my amplifier is fried, I went to two stereo stores that still understand vinyl and auditioned two systems (Naim/Rega/Dynavector/Neat) and (Reson/DNM/Crimson/ATC) - appears to be a great LP.

wolff, Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have a number of the 90's GRP/Impulse! vinyl reissues. Unfortuneately, BLACK SAINT & THE SINNER LADY was not a part of that reissue series.
-
Never one to do things half-way, I fried 13 resistors and the transformer - the only salvagable "working" parts are a few of the tubes. Of course the aluminum case, not a "looker" to begin with, is in mint condition.

Thanks for the link Lon. Z-man, no audible symtoms prior to death. I like to think that the amp died doing what it loved - making music. I don't mind the search for a new amp, nor do I in any way feel that I didn't get full value from the SORO. What I mind is being unable to play any LPs until I get a replacement. I can play CDs in the car and on the dvd player @ home.

Any opinions on the Speakers Corner 180 gm Impulse! reissues ? I am tempted by Mingus' BLACK SAINT & THE SINNER LADY. I have a 70's green-label ABC/Impulse reissue - thin vinyl.

My former 20wpc Audio Note SORO SE just crashed and burned (figuratively) from getting too hot. Apparently, I failed to change the output tubes before meltdown. Its a total loss. I did get five years of wonderful music from that little intergated that could. I am searching for a replacement. Will it be tube ? Without a doubt.

My "vote" is for the danasgoodstuff/jazzbo/White Lightning/Harold_Z/catesta/king ubu ticket. charlesp -
Leeway, If you are willing to spend more for glorious vinyl, the Classic Records reissue (either mono or stereo) is a big improvement over the Blue Note late-90's vinyl reissue. I have both and much prefer the Classic, but it costs $30.00, compared to $18.00 for the BN. charles

Venus Records have just issued 10 new LPs on 180g RED vinyl ( a fetish within a fetish - a subfetish ? ). The LPs are available from Hiroshi Tanno @EarlyRecords, or fromRed Trumpet. The LPs include an Eddie Higgins w/ strings - Moonlight Becomes You, a release from Charles McPherson w/ the Steve Kuhn trio - But Beautiful, a new release from David Hazeltine - Alice In Wonderland, a Chano Dominguez trio LP - Con Alma, a live recording from Jimmy Scott - Live In Tokyo, a Stefano Bollani trio LP - Ma L'Amore No, Peter Bernstein w/ the Brad Mehldau trio - Stranger In Paradise, a Ray Brown tribute from Jay Leonhart, Benny Green and Joe Cohn - Fly Me To The Moon, and LPs from artists with whom I am unfamiliar - a vocalist named Simone, and John DiMartino's "Romantic Jazz Trio". I can recommend Con Alma and Alice In Wonderland. Thanks to Mr. Tanno, I am enjoying a fantastic pressing of an ESPdisc - a Venus Records reissue of Steve Lacy's The Forest And The Zoo - what a concept - fantastic pressing and ESP in the same sentence !

Adam, VESPERS is an outstanding cd, with a major contribution from Ricky Ford, and Tom Varner's french horn added to the Lacy sextet of the time - Lacy, Potts, Few, Aebi, Avenal and Betsch. I think that it is an "essential" Lacy recording - but be aware that Irene Aebi does sing translations of Blaga Dimitrova's poetry. THE RENT is a very well-recorded live concert (2 sets on 2 discs) of Lacy's trio playing Lacy's compositions and Monk's "Shuffle Boil" - Steve only tackled the "easy" Monk compositions. You will not regret either purchase.

New Miles box: Seven Steps To Heaven
charlesp replied to take5's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Does anyone know if Mosaic intends to issue this set on alalog vinyl ? -
How VERY VERY sad ...... I love Steve Lacy's music - a true original - staying with a "then" obscure axe and celebrating Monk's compositions before it was derigueur to do so - MAN !!! I will miss his spirit. But will continue to celebrate his recorded legacy. Aric - the New Jazz LPs are happining - BUT DON"T STOP THERE - Lacy's 70's LP on Saravah - THE OWL and 80's work on Hat and Soul Note is beautiful. And his trios - THE RENT, THE HOLY LA, WORK and duos w/ Mal Waldron and with Marilyn Crispell and Misha Mengelberg ( FIVE FACINGS on FMP) are all worthy.

Back up so any who don't have this fantastic release can order one from Chuck and those who do have it can add it to the stack of cds to listen to over the holiday weekend.

Where to begin ? Art Ensemble of Chicago - PEOPLE IN SORROW on nessa Chet Baker Quintet - SMOKIN' w/ ,or GROOVIN' w/ , on Prestige Marion Brown - THREE FOR SHEPP on Impulse! John Carter/Bobby Bradford Quartet - FLIGHT FOR FOUR on Flying Dutchman or - SEEKING on Revelation Sonny Criss - THIS IS CRISS! on Prestige Art Farmer - THE TIME & THE PLACE w/ Jimmy Heath on Columbia Stan Getz - SWEET RAIN on Verve Roland Kirk - RIP, RIG & PANIC on Limelight Lee Konitz w/ Martial Solal - EUROPEAN EPISODE or IMPRESSIVE ROME on Campi Warne Marsh - NE PLUS ULTRA on Revelation more later... -
Another enthusiastic for both cds recorded @ Lennie's on the Turnpike in April 1965 - LIVE! and THE LAST FROM LENNIE'S. Listening to those sessions might inspire a segway to Booker Ervin's THE FREEDOM BOOK or THE SPACE BOOK or to Roland Kirk's RIP,RIG & PANIC.

wolff, I have a little over 40 Venus LPs - Richard Beirach, Stefano Bollani, Marion Brown, Bill Charlap, Stanley Cowell, Roland Hanna, Eddie Higgins, Steve Kuhn, One For All, Enrico Rava, Archie Shepp, Barney Wilen, Claude Williamson, and Phil Woods - as you can see strong emphasis on piano trios and "mainstream-oriented". The music, recording and production quality (including covers), quality of vinyl are ALL superlative. Venus does have a webpage in Japanese - Venus Records charles
