  1. I don't know. . . tube reverberation is better than solid state or digital reverberation. . . . If it had tremolo, I'd say go for the Silvertone!
  2. You know I'd like to reread a number of Faulkner books, I'd like to have the time; I have so many books piled up to read. . . . And I'm supposed to be putting my time and effort elsewhere. I find I get more out of Faulkner as I gain life experience. That's not always true with some of the authors I've reread, but it has always been true of William.
  3. I hope ole William-tine Clemner is having a good laugh with this thread too! Have a break Allen, you're welcome.
  4. Well I do. It's more the way that he creates his own little world of words. Faulkner did that, even created his own little county. Rag on him, sure, he likes that. But he's smart and sassy and has a depth of his own. . . a depth that some other posters don't have. That's how I see it.
  5. Yes, this "gift" cd is very nice! Great collection of rareties, and the more contemporary stuff is also great! Got the Paramount Hot Dance Obscurities Volume Two, and the Edison Hot Dance Obscurities Volume Two as well. . . . And Kendall (they are both predominantly or completely Kendall remastered) does himself very proud.
  6. I'll agree. . . it's not essential really to have the introductions UNLESS you have a sentimental attachment to them (I do, loved the lps I had and managed to get all knicked up in my youth) and unless you want the extra material on the Verve set not on the Mosaic and possibly a bit of improved digital sound (I think the Verve sounds a smidgeon better). But the music is SO good.
  7. These PJ lps in this set are great! I've got them all. . . . That was why they chose the set, I had them all already! -_-
  8. In this universe, yes, Monk was the first. In the Bizarro world, the first Mosaic was the Four Freshmen.
  9. OR the complete Una Mae Carlisle!
  10. Bechet! I guess I'm most excited about this, as I have a lion's share of the material in the other sets. . . .
  11. Personally, I'm hoping he's working on a novel. . . . He's like the Faulkner of organissimo if you ask me. . . I enjoy reading his posts a lot. I understand most of them. . . -_- Anyway, I'd wish he'd return to posting. . . has to be more fun than "excavating for a mine."

    Props for Pops

Yes, but as he is nearing 50 day by day he's not planning on really celebrating birthdays any longer! Here's to Louis! Have "Ambassador Satch" going right now!

    Props for Pops

It's almost time to celebrate Pops' birthday again, August 4! Let's take time this week to listen to THE MAN and to ponder his importance. . . .
  14. Never saw this Japanese version. . . .Looks cool. Almost time for the birthday celebration!
  15. To me he sounds like Louis, natural.
  16. You know, I have some Bose speakers (unused for a long time) and I DON'T believe that Bose is a four letter word like many audio lovers seem to. . . . BUT. . . . I wouldn't buy one of their stereo systems. . . not that they're bad, but they are way overpriced. The entire product line is overpriced. You don't get what you pay for with their stuff. I have been interested in the new digital amps, and especially digital receivers with cd and or dvd and SACD players incorporated, and this last week spent some time listening to a Sony digital receiver with an SACD/DVD/CD player incorporated, running into the speakers of a 27" Trinitron TV. (In the swanky Waikiki hotel room that I hated to leave!)That system sounded a lot better than I expected it to, and I bet with even modest separate speakers it would sound even better. . . . I was impressed. Didn't have a glare to the treble and an edginess I find in solid state machines at this price point and beyond, and there was a lot of "resonance" to the sound. I'd look in to one of those, last Xmas season they were available for between 300 and 500 dollars, and speakers could be had that mate with them easily. . . .I think with this system that SACDs are not even really converted to analog before amplification, a real plus; I didn't have any SACDs with me to play though. If I were ever allowed the right to have a system in the bedroom (it's outlawed so far by my wife; she wants a music/tv free zone!) I'd consider one of these receivers. . . . I would really like to recommend more expensive machinary that is tube amplified, but they don't quite fall into your budget. . . . .
  17. I thought arrogance was a qualification for posting here? Seems like it sometimes (I'm not exempting myself!)

    Jim Hall

You know, that has happened to me. . . . I printed out a scanned and sized photo of the cover in color and stuck that in the case. . . . Spruces it up a little bit!
  19. The upcoming mispriced Jimmy Smith RVG at cduniverse.com

    Vibe Zone

Do you get the 'vibe" that this thread is here to stay? Recently been digging all over again the vibes of Tubby Hayes.
  21. Grew up in big city, then went to foreign biggish city, then foreign small city (town really) then to small US town, then schooled in big city, then back to small town, then to big city, then to small town, then to small city where I stayed. . . . (Though it has gotten larger around me). I guess small city is where I would stay, though I've recently discovered I wouldn't mind a larger one like Honolulu in due time. . . . But my wife really prefers a larger city, being A D.C. area kiddo, and I forsee a big carefully considered location decision in our future in about five years. . . . I voted for small city. . . .
  22. Jack Teagarden or Mildred Bailey, take your pick. . . .
  23. Actually, I think over time a lot of the O'Day material WILL come out on Verve International; already some dates have been out, at a pace that makes me think more will be forthcoming, there are Japanese releases, and some of these cdan be downloaded from the Verve Vault at a bargain (10 dollars for a digital facimile of a Japanese POCJ cd is a good deal!)
