    Jimmy Rowles

Well here's three favorites of mine where he makes very important contributions: Two Zoot Sims: Passion Flower For Lady Carmen McRae: Great American Song Book (the original lp and the Japanese two cd set is better as it has all the "banter" but this is great stuff where Jimmy is musical director and plays so well). I really like the trio session he did for Nocturne, but I don't think it's available outside of the three cd complete box set on Fresh Sound (?)
  2. Bertrand, no I never have heard that one, love the Monk and the Mingus you cite. (The Mingus is one of those rare cds I have in the living room, in my listening room, and at work!) Another favorite solo piano release of mine is Gasline Plays Ayler.

    Jimmy Rowles

Well, I've been listening to those Verve Billie Holiday sessions with Sweets and Brute and Jimmy Rowles, and it is just making me believe that Jimmy is one of my very favorite pianists. We talk about him here a little but there isn't a lot of blather about him, which may be a shame. I notice over the last few years how he's on some of the sessions of artists that I reach out for more than others. And it boils down to his being such a wonderful accompanist. But he's so much more than that. Still he's at the keys for my favorite Verve Holiday, my favorite McRae, maybe even my favorite Getz and Zoot. That says a LOT to me. I need to explore his work as a leader more because the little that I have is great! Rowles has that elegant touch and technique to burn, but like Earl Hines. . . it's always JAZZ. He's just jazz through and through. And I sort of view him as I do Mobley: he's so hip, he's always just giving the thought out cool thing that is just right. A thinker, a swinger, and a painter. Anyone else a big fan?
  4. Someone should take advantage of this to stop his annoying pleading. I don't agree with him I think. . . I used to have the Stash cds, a/b'd them with the JCS cds and sold them. Then bought the Storyville and compared those to the JVC and gave the JVCs to my dad. And in the notes to the Storyville Towers seems happy with the results. I personally think that the Cedar was not heavily-handed and the set sounds great. And there are much better liner notes than on any other cd edition. Someone go for it before he changes his mind.
  5. Why would I like a Duke of Hazards feature? You're right Jim, prison would be on the list. Hey, I like Opera Man and several other Sandler shticks. .. but I've cringed at his movie work and admit I haven't given him a chance to show me that he's improved or changed because I just can't bear to put money on one of his films.
  6. Thank goodness he lets us use the darned thng! I'm tempted to order the eight cd EMI box of Deubssy and Ravel symphonies. . . .I'll probably do so next month.
  7. "The Gnosis or Ancient Wisdom in the Christian Scriptures," by William Kingsland. (A Theosophist work).
  8. Earl Hines playing Duke Ellington on Master Jazz. The Monk Vogue recordings. Lots of Tatum possibilities.
  9. Okay, if there are two very American things I really don't have time for. . .it's football and Adam Sandler! That's just me, the first part largely due to my spending my adolescence in Africa. Not feeling the slightest inclination to see THIS one.
  10. My copy of this shows that the tunes with just Byas are from the same concert as If I Had You, Take the A Train, Ergo and Lester Leaps In. That is they are recorded live at the Scala concert halol in Arhous Denmark "circa 1959". . . . Says the r-section is Bent Axen, NHOP, and William Schoiffe. . . so different spelling for the drummer and obviously NHOP credited on bass. The Topsy and My Funny Valentine tracks are credited with an r-section of Paul Godske, NHOP and Alex Reil, from "a TV broadcast circa 1961." Both sections could well have NHOP within according to my ears, for what that's worth. I have a custom made cdr that purports to be from Jazz Mark 101. I like the TV broadcast tracks the best myself. It's interesting to hear the two horns with the same section though, Brew being more Presidential, and Byas being more Bean-like. . . .
  11. Well, I didn't make it through the day without buying something. I came home to a booklet from Berkshire Record Outlet and noticed there was a 12 cd collection of Beethoven solo piano music for 24 dollars I did not order fast enough last time it was available, and ran over to the compuer and placed an order! 1. 5061342-SONY/CBS Beethoven The Complete Works for Solo Piano. (Yukio Yokoyam... Category: CD, Qty: 1, Price: 23.88 Code 125813
  12. Nothing today, but yesterday I bought that 10 cd set of Astor Piazzolla music from caiman.
  13. But Ron. . .there's no guitar player on this one!
  14. Interesting. . . . I always thought this originated as an English lp (though looking back I am not sure why I got that impression). Out on cd. . . not essential Ra but fun!
  15. Wow, that Ellington looks great!

    Chicago

One of my first shows in America was a stadium show of Chicago from the same general time frame as the Carnegie Hall box. It was pretty cool for me then. Not as cool as seeing Santana in London was a year before that but what would be?
  17. Janet Leigh in color. . . . HMMH. . . .
  18. The MLW 10" material is also part of the wonderful Chronogical Classics 1346, Mary Lou Williams 1951-1953. Thank goodness for these MLW Classics.
  19. It's a damned good one in my opinion. Hard to say in a career that spanned more than fifty years what is "one of his best." There were so many masterworks within different periods. This was a great show though, and glad it was captured for us all to enjoy!
  20. I don't have it and I long ago dispensed with my old Bluebird box (went with the Jazz Tribune "Black and White" discs and with Classics discs) but it's basically a near identical box as far as I can tell. The sound is going to be MUCH better. There are a few instances of a "spitting distortion" that bother a few but to my ears the sound is very very good.
  21. Wayne Shorter, "Alegria." I don't really like "Footprints," and I'm not expecting much, but the price is right.
  22. I just saw the last ten minutes play back on tape. It sure looked like a boring night. I really could care less about Bo or Carrie. Not surprised Carrie won, but I think she's just plain mediocre, not sexy, not a great singer. UGH. And yes that WAS the G Man! A new tv low!
  23. I like the RCA Burtons, don't know the ECMs. Swallow's ebass work doesn't bother me. At all. I think Burton's playing is wonderful on these as well. I guess it's just different strokes for different folks.
  24. Definitely get the "Never No Lament," and wait for the eventual release of the earlier material in a set. I differ from 'the conventional wisdom' somewhat in that I prefer to hear the twenties and early thirties Duke to the Blanton-Webster era and early forties in general Duke. I love the latter, but the former just seems monumentally important AND eternally enjoyable to me.
