  1. Penne: Penne rigate Penne, Mostaccioli "Penne, Mostaccioli ("Quills" and "Small Mustaches," respectively) - This tubular pasta goes well with sauce, used in salads, baked in casseroles, or made into stir fry dishes." Mostaccioli: Ziti: "Ziti ("Bridegrooms") - A medium-sized, tubular pasta shape, Ziti is perfect for chunky sauces and meat dishes. It also makes wonderful salads, baked dishes and stir-fry meals." Mangia!
  2. They have a lot of reissue vinyl, including some Blue Note titles @ $8.99 each. I've asked before, but have yet to receive an answer on it, but who is producing and issuing these Blue Note vinyl titles? Kevin, I was hoping you might. Does Blue Note have some control over these issues? Who is making them? And, lastly, are these from analog masters? Anyone know?
  3. That's crazy Arent' there easier ways to, er, "please your wife"?
  4. Chuck Berry and Pete Townsend-- rock and roll guitar gods-- they made every red-blooded boy (don't know about the girls-- check with Larry Sommers on that one ) want a guitar: I had the good fortune to see both in performance-- at the Fillmore East-- electrifying
  5. Hadn't read McMaster's comments before--very interesting. Thanks.
  6. For the record, .52%. I suspect that over the last few months, it has been much higher, but there have been substantial periods of inactivity also-- yeah, I know, you're hoping for more of those It would be interesting to plot or graph the rate at which posts are made: flatlined? ascending line? descending line? occasional blips? Getting started on your chart or graph
  7. Baked ziti with Italian sausages and beef chunks in sauce. As an Italian kid growing up in NYC, I usually ate "macaroni" as we called it) every Sunday. That would involve a variety of pasta and several additional courses. I don't stick to the Sunday pasta routine as much anymore, but I'm looking forward to tonight's meal-- I can smell the sauce cooking
  8. I've been feelign a lot like the fellow pictured on the cover of the first album below, so, with the snow falling, it was time to just listen to somemusic: And: And: And: And: Blue Note, white "b" And: Von Freeman- SERENADE AND BLUES - Nessa. Terrific record.
  9. I assume the first of those tasks is charitable work, but how much does the second pay?
  10. THE BROTHERS Prestige 7022. Getz, Sims, Cohn, Eager, and Brew Moore, Kai Winding, Walter Boshop, Gene Ramey, George Wallingon, Percy Heath, Art Blakey. And: Columbia "six-eye" pressing, CL 1355. No "time correction" here; if it was good enough for Miles, it's good enough for me.
  11. I was thinking of Daisy Duke:
  12. You might be able to have some fun with the question if you rework it a bit; for example: You have just won the Grand Prize, your choice of the entire catalog of CDs issued by Blue Note or Prestige. You must choose one; which would it be?
  13. I'm not a Baptist. Don't Baptists have sex?
  14. I always tell Mosaic to ship it UPS. Big Brown has done right by me so far.
  15. No, no pointing, he said "hook me up" : HOOKUP
  16. i think the sax on the first plan is not a bass saxophone, it's a contrabass ( one octave lower than the baritone sax , in Eb key ) the sax family sopranino (Eb) soprano (Bb) alto (Eb) tenor (Bb) bari (Eb) bass (Bb) contrabass (Eb) Selmer Bass Saxophone It must be hell getting those suckas on a NYC subway or taxi B-)
  17. Wouldn't it be fun to see someone like Jason Moran or Dave Holland on Oprah? Who knows what might happen
  18. BLUE NOTE CONTEMPORARY SAMPLER Various Artists. Donald Byrd, Bobby Hutcherson, Bobbi Humphrey, Gene Harris, Carmen McRae, Eddie Henderson, John Lee and Gerry Brown (who were they?), Horace Silver, Alphonse Mouzon. They could have / should have called this one "Funk 'N Synth" B-) And: Max Roach and Clifford Brown - DAAHOUD Mainstream Records, 386, mono
  19. Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - LIVE! Everest Records FS332, recorded live at Slug's in New York City in August 1968. Bill Hardman-tpt; Billy Harper-tsx; Julian Priester-tbn; Ronnie Mathews-p; Larry Evans-b Michael Fitzgerald's excellent discog site shows this band toured in 1968 and performed twice at Slug's, and this August performance was issued (originally I would assume) as Trip 5034 (the Everest issue doesn't appear). Recording quality about adequate. This was a pretty powerful lineup (although Priester doesn't really register, perhaps a result of the recording mix), and it is interesting to hear them in live performance. Harper turns in a nice lyrical performance on "Angel Eyes," the rest is the hardest of hard bop. Blakey plays like a force of nature and drives the band.
  20. Brownie, you're right, of course, that Bechet album has some terrific playing on it. "Sleepy Time Down South" knocked me out. This RCA issue has a nice photo of Bechet on the cover, and is on nice, thick vinyl, with excellent sound. Spinning: Getz with Almeida, on Verve. And: Ella Fitzgerald- SINGS JEROME KERN - Verve
  21. Wasn't Wagner's music once described as moments of sublime beauty, interrupted by hours of tedium? B-) Here you have an opinion about Wagner's music: W. ALLEN: I can't listen to that much Wagner, ya know? I start to get the urge to conquer Poland. magic helmet! (turn up your sound ) Gotta get me one of those magic helmets!
  22. Yes, the forms and means of influence have changed, moving away from print culture to the Internet and other electronic media-- hence my crack about Oprah, or Rooster's comment about Yanow. Yanow will probably be read by more potential music buyers than most other critics. If one is talking about intellectual influence, writers past and present like Andre Hodeir, Martin Williams, John Litweiler, Nat Hentoff and Larry Kart will continue to influence thinking on jazz. BTW, I would venture to say that this Board influences a significant portion of the jazz "market." A BBS like this is really an interesting development and phenomenon in itself.
  23. One thing to keep in mind about TT is that the choice of cartridge is going to have a significant bearing on the type of sound obtained. Cartidges have their own soun qualities, and mating cartidges to TTs requires some care.
  24. I didn't say she knew anything about jazz, only that if you got on her show, you will sell a lot of CDs B-) . Just like her "book club." I believe her taste runs to smooth jazz
