    Overlooked Altos

Has anyone mentioned Kenny Garrett? Was in one of Miles' groups in the late 80s.
  3. you know they'll probably just tell you to keep it and send you a replacement. I've actually considered ordering the JJ and 7-steps box to keep as backups to the ones I bought in the stores when they came out, or at least as something of an investment, since the metal spine editions are limited editions Is yourmusic.com selling the metal spine editions?
  4. Happy Birthday
  5. See Patricia's post above. Your evocative description mad eme want to post this: Cool
  6. I have the LP version of the box and it is one of my favorites. Just great music.
  7. Good luck, I haven't quite figured out their return system. They tell you to send it back in the box it came in, but they also tell you to send it to a different address. Not quite clear who pays, where it should go, etc. Customer service is spotty, but they advised me that it can take 4 weeks for returned items to be credited. I ordered a Joe Cocker box set and it came within 5 days of placing the order. Guess nobody else wanted it . It seems that if it is not a high demand item, it will ship ASAP. O/W, you have to wait...and wait... OTOH, as has been noted, great price.
  8. That's pretty interesting info about Slugs. Ironic name, too, I guess, when you consider Lee Morgan's end. But tdo you think Shorter is a "rather uninteresting human being?" From what I've read of him, he seem like one of the more interesting musicians around. But personality aside, he has made some great music and been an important part of the modern jazz scene. As for the biography as it stands, I guess it turned out to be a Grub Street affair, but not without some value anyway.
  9. Atlantic double LP. "Tones for Joan's Bones," with Woody Shaw, Joe Farrell, Steve Swallow, Joe Chambers, and some Hubert Laws-Chick Corea tracks. AND: Perception LP. LY, taking the organ "beyond."
  10. Richard Wyands -truly overlooked. I suppose Russ Freeman might still count as generally overlooked.
  11. I'll be interested in picking up "Dig" also, as much for Jackie McLean as for Miles. I like Jackie's youthful playing.
  12. Could there be a worse job than being Couch's editor?
  13. On further thought, they sure would be nice to have....
  14. Who can AFFORD that much Motown? 72 discs, costing nearly $1,500 I like Motown and I do think there is a need to pull this material together, as so much of it came out on 45s, and is now hard to find. But this might be too much of a good thing.
  15. if you can believe Miles, in his "Autobiogrpahy," (add salt, I know), he thought pretty highly of that "Dig" session, although it seems to get the brush-off from a lot of reviewers.
  16. I think the style is designed to suggest the oracular nature of the material being read, and harkens back to the concept of the Aeolian harp, where the poet's reading is a sort of god-inspired affair.
  17. They've been telling me that "Translinear Light" has been backordered since I placed my order over a week ago! My Translinear Light plus a dozen more selections have been on Backorder for almost 2 weeks now. Edit: I went to check the Yourmusic site and Translinear now shows as shipped, along with Tyner's Illuminations. Hooray! Some movement at last! Still a bunch on Backorder but hope has been renewed
  18. I don't think he was so much a casualty of that era so much as someone who has been having some major health issues. Here's a quote from the press release on the spencerdryden.com site: It sounds like he went through hell. Yes, certainly his health was a big factor. But it was clear also that he was still hurt by the band' decision to replace him and get a new drummer. He didn't seem to have the sort of ego that could stand up to Slick, Balin, and Kantner.
  19. Saw that DVD. I'd agree. Dryden looked like a casualty of the era and of the life of the band he was a part of. Others like Kantner and Slick still seemed to have a lot of fight in them. Dryden, in contrast, looked worn out. I liked his drumming and loved the sound of the band in its heyday.
  20. Jazz Crusaders - GIVE PEACE A CHANCE Pacific Jazz/Liberty. Showing signs of incipient commercialism, but still plenty of straight-ahead cooking jazz. ALSO: Check out Holland's bass playing. ALSO: The Essential Jimi Hendrix
