I recommend Bach for these types of projects!

Damn, I thought the punchline was: "Lady, that's a LIZARD in my pants!"

Some Blue Note this afternoon. Up first, Mobley's "A Slice of the Top": Another terrible LT cover series. The cover for McLean's "Consequences" in the same series would have made a more fitting cover for the Mobley. Anyway, one of Mobley's more unusual ensembles. There seemd to have been a fad for a while for the use of euphonium. Anyone still using that? Quintessential BN. This title should never have been/or be allowed to-- go out of print: King pressing.

A little medical advice, please...
Leeway replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Don't want to bombard you with more advice than you can deal with, but I had one additional thought. That is, call your insurance company. You mentioned you were not sure what is or is not covered. Find out what's covered. Make sure you understand your policy, and the company's procedures for seeking medical attention, filing claims, hospital coverage, etc. Most insurance companies have 24 hour service lines. They can be frustrating to deal with, no doubt about it, but they sometimes can help you sort out the medical options, and, in any event, it would be good to get them to pick up the costs, as much as possible. It's useful to get them on your side as much as possible. I've had my share of experiences with this type of situation, so I offer it as one who has been there. Once again, good luck. Let your wife know that we are all rooting for her. -
I'll take ten ! Well, somebody is taking ONE (at a mere $99.99), which I think is crazy enough

To paraphrase Samuel Johnson, "When you are too old for Hendrix, you are too old for life" I saw Hendrix 35 years ago at the Fillmore East. I still play his music. Rock On!

A little medical advice, please...
Leeway replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
How does your wife feel? Does she feel she needs immediate attention? If you or her feel she needs emergency treatment, then take her back to the emergency room. Don't delay. Next step: Find an MD you are comfortable with, someone who can organize and assess the treatment(s), and give you feedback that you have confidence in. You need a good MD for your family, period. If the situation doesn't require immediate hospital treatment, then see what the neurologists say when your appointment comes due. You might be able to get staff to move the appointment up to Monday; tell them how serious it looks to you. Doctors are rather bureaucratic; it's their way of protecting themselves emotionally and legally. I suspect they want to be sure of their diagnosis before making and conclusive statements. But, again, do have them take an extra minute to explain what is going on. Best wishes. -

They key thing in dealing with doctors is "communication." Unfortunately, sometimes you have to MAKE your doctor communicate with you. Don't know why that' so, but it often seems like the rule, rather than the exception. Without being confrontational, have your doctors explain carefully to you, so that you really understand them, what they are diagnosing. What you told us, you need to tell your doctor(s). I know everyone on this Board is wishing your wife a safe and healthy outcome. -
I've never been much of a fan of the Miles/Gil Evans collaborations. "Sketches" seems to me to be rather kitschy and pretentious. As others have noted, "BB" is usually a litmus test as to whether you will like later-Miles. A lot of people never get into it. I did, but it took me a while. I'd second the Blackhawk set.

What are some of the other Monk "tributes" worth listening to?

Hey Sonic 1, welcome to the site! Good to have another vinyl spinner on board

Didn't Blue Note reissue a series of LPs in or around 1998-2000, something along the lines of BN's 50 Greatest Albums? In fact, Vinyl is not totally phased out at Mosaic; for example, there are the Miles Davis sets. From the Mosaic site: As the saying goes, even Homer nods on occasion. In other words, I think Mosaic made a mistake in discontinuing their vinyl versions. As Wolff can confirm, the market for audiophile LPs has never been stronger. I do not see why Mosaic, perhaps in partnership with Classic or Analogue, could not have continued to release some of their sets in vinyl. BTW, if vinyl is commercially non-feasible, why is Mosaic still issuing Miles sets in vinyl? One more point: the vinyl sets will never be outmoded, whereas the CD versions will be victims of advancing technology- 16 bit, 20bit, 24 bit, SACD, DVD-A, and who knows what will be next. Oh yeah, vinyl will always sound good

Wolff, I would just give him his money back if he pays the return shipping and the product is not damaged. Why fuel hostilities? "Peace-out"

Wanted to hear some Dewey Redman, so checked out: Can't say I'm much of a Keith Jarrett fan, but this is a very good outing. Jarrett's "vocalizing" makes Glenn Gould sound like Pavarotti. A dreaful wheedling sound Impulse! LP

The "Best of Funny Rat" -- a sure party favorite

I don't believe the $$$ numbers. I suspect it's mostly hype. If they are stupid enough to actually pay him that kind of money, they will go broke pronto. I like Howard (in moderate doses) but his ratings record is not such that he would be worth that kind of money.

A rainy day off gave me a bit of extra time to listen: Blue Note, Blue label, white "B" Country Joe-- minus his "Fish"- I saw Country Joe and The Fish back in the late 60s at the Fillmore East, and yes, we did the F-cheer! And it's 1, 2, 3, what are we fighting for? I don't give a damn, next stop it's Vietnam." Maybe now it's Baghdad or Fallujah? Anti-war songs based on the poetry of Robert Service. All-too relevant, alas. I prefer Joe with The Fish. Vanguard LPs. I've heard a lot about Graham Parker- sounds to me like a mix of Bryan Ferry, David Bowie, and especially Elvis Costello-- but without the inner fire: Back to some jazz: Atlantic SD 1572 Some terrific 70s organ jazz/funk: With Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Eddie Henderson, Mark Elf on guitar, smokin! Prestige double-LP.

One step beyond, giant step, or even giant steps? If Hendrix made us want "electric ladyland," Taj made us want to get our lady, take to the land, and rusticate. Columbia LP. Speaking of beginnings and endings, Pharoah Sanders told us what he thought: "the Creator has a Master Plan"- MCA Impulse LP.
-
All about beginnings and endings: Both Blue Notes are blue label, white "b"- "Van Gelder" in the deadwax on "Beyond". I recall that the Pepper album came up on this tread before, and AJF67 offered me a burn. Thanks Drew, but I found (stumbled across) my copy at last A fine Pepper session. Hurts to think how many years Art spent in jail after recording this gem. and Bob Dylan, "New Morning"- Columbia LP

I posted this in the Mosaic thread a little while ago. I've never been any good at turning a buck
-
Happy Birthday MKE I checked out your blog spot-- nice site.

We've all heard the stories of people throwing away valuable LPs -- Mosaics for a buck at garage sales, rare Blue Notes dumped by cloddish family members, etc. Here you have the opposite instance of people trying to dump mostly dreck for big $$$ B-)

Concert review from City Pulse
Leeway replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Wasn't me was it? I get enough bad press here. B-) BUT you do look kinda square. No, it wasn't you, Chuck (breathe easy!) It was a drunk guy at the Green Door Lounge here in Lansing. What can I do to cure my square appearance? Shall I grow the obligatory soul patch or goatee? Or should I go this route: It would be a start -
There's a fill-in DJ on the local "jazz and justice" radio station. Goes by the name "Brother Hodari" [phonetic spelling]. All through his broadcast, it's "Brother So and So," and, "Brother xyz" and sometimes, "Sister So and So" [no, not literally ]. All voiced in a decidedly unctuous manner. From the rap he lays down, it's not clear if this is a new form of Islamic posturing (I use the word advisedly, because it sounds like posturing when he does it) (he's always on about teachings of Islam), or a new form of black nationalism, in which everyone is a brother or sister. I'm not knocking either Islam or black nationalism, but it really bothers me when this guy uses "Brother " as if he decided we have all just signed up for his commune, or whatever. It just seems presumptuous for the guy to be "Brothering" me and the other listeners. It seems a little too slick and un-earned. Is this a new fad or something?
