My impression is that Connie's playing is very situational. When she plays with someone like Tabnik, it gets more buttoned down, more modulated, more compositional, perhaps one can say more apparently Tristano-ish, while still retaining an improvisatory spirit. In solo performances, it tends to get more ecstatic and energy-driven (although I think the core is still Tristano-ish). In impromptu group settings, she plays somewhere in between these positions, reacting to what others are doing. At least that's the way I've seen her over some years.

Interesting figure from the Chicago scene. I like this one.

Not sure if I hear it like that myself, but have you heard Jimmy Halperin's Joy & Gravitas on CIMP? That one was a more than slight "jolt" for me. I haven't heard Halperin. My ideas about Connie pretty much come from her live performances.

Connie was a student of Lennie Tristano. Her saxophonist, Richard Tabnik is still very much a Tristano-ite. There's a connection there. I think she has taken Tristano and brought him into the free improv arena. I like her live performances, often quite a bit, but have not delved into her recordings; they don't seem to capture what she does best.

Progress Report: I'm now somewhat past the midpoint of my giant Penguin edition of Clarissa (p. 780 of 1500). I find the book absolutely brilliant, but like a mountain climber halfway up a tall slope, I'm both thrilled, and chastened that there are still more steps to take to get to the end. It's not drudgery at all, just simple effort or focus. The story, as Dr, Johnson pointed out, is nothing very complicated, but the mass of feeling, thoughts, ideas, social habits, etc, requires the closest attention, and rewards it too. This is really Ground Zero of the modern novel. It bursts the bounds of its own epistolary form, yet uses it to great effect in terms of vividness and immediacy. Anyway, it's really a remarkable work. Now to get up the rest of the mountain.

I've seen Cecil a couple times, when he has rewarded the audience with poetry and dance, in addition to solo piano. I have to say it's rather mesmeric.

What's the source of this material. or, at least, of the Scott? There is no information on the LP jacket but Discogs states: "Recorded at Reeves Sound Studios, New York City; October 29, November 23 and 30, 1956." Don't know their source. That's all I got. Maybe someone else has more. The liner note says the session was the idea of bassist Trigger Alpert and lists Dick Hyman, Marty Paich and Tony Scott as arrangers. On my LP, the arrangers as you give Bill are listed but nothing about the sessions being the idea of Trigger Alpert (although I read somewhere that they were). Do you have perhaps a UK version (was there such?). Mine is Jazzland JLP-11.

Some pretty avant stuff for 1978.

This idea that the show somehow was a critique of the Vietnam war. On reflection doubt that was entirely the case. In essence, the show was about the imposition of American power (even though an international crew) through the use of powerful craft (like a huge aircraft carrier), to impose our will on recalcitrant aliens. Given a good fair and square fistfight we'd always prevail, not like ducking through jungles. Differences were settled, but it usually took a few photon torpedos and cannon fire to do it. Maybe that was its appeal. BTW, the guy on the "away team" whom you never saw in previous episodes, always got killed. Was usually wearing a red shirt.

Kirk fist fights Kirk love affairs with ET women Bones, "I'm a doctor Jim, not a ____" fill in the blank Scotty: "The warp drive are melted " but I'll have them fixed in 30 minutes. Shields! Bridge Zulu! Try subspace frequency Uhuru! And, of course, "Beam us up, Scotty!" Saw these first run on TV. Nevertheless, preferred Next Generation.

I wanted to hear the Giuffre pieces. Anyway, mine is the cheap Jazzlore reissue (couldn't find a pic).
