Short story: "The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher" My library finally surfaced a copy of "The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher," a short story collection by Hilary Mantel. SInce I am involved with Clarissa (near page 1000!), I didn't have time to read the entire group of stories, just the title story, which I understand has been quite controversial in UK. Interested in reactions to the story. Is it possible to have a literary reaction to the story that isn't also political? What is the political reaction? I believe some UK media have posted the story online if anyone is interested.

How do you react when someone grabs an LP by the grooves?
Leeway replied to BeBop's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
If you are selling at fairs or street markets, you could turn it into a "teachable moment"- along the lines of: "Are you familiar with LPs? .....let me show you the best way to handle them.....here's why.....great LP sound etc." Might ring up a sale or make a convert as a result. -
Harper Lee to publish second novel
Leeway replied to jazzbo's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The movie, "Capote," shows Capote and Harper Lee working together on the investigation and book (strange to think about), so maybe it worked the other way around? Interesting! Unless Harper Lee says something about it, doubt that will be definitively established. That's why "Watchman" could be pretty interesting. -

Harper Lee to publish second novel
Leeway replied to jazzbo's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I've always suspected that Truman Capote (a neighbor and friend of the Lees) had a hand in helping Harper Lee finish and polish "Mockingbird." I've always thought it was highly unusual for Harper Lee to publish one novel yet not have the usual writing apprenticeship or occasional writings that other writers have. Which is to say, you expect wood shavings in a carpenter's shop. Maybe this equel is her wood shavings. It will be interesting to compare "Watchman" to Mockingbird, and see if there is consistency of style and craftsmanship between them, if they seem from the same hand. -

That Williams/Smith/Braxton set should be exciting. Are they recording this? Would make a great box set! -
In red! Somewhere in the 70s, whoever owned Chess/Argo/Etc (or maybe somebody who didn't own it...) flooded the cutout bins with all these LPs that had B&W Xerox-y looking covers. Not remembering if this was the same batch that had same front and back covers, but there was that too. Anyway, you know how tricky xeroxing red could be back in the day. Yeah, I have the B&W cover. I saw the color versions. I guess when they placed the B&W copy order, they didn't realize that the "J" would blend into the black background, with amusing results. Did it inspire Mats Gustafsson's "Swedish Azz"?

AND: Tim Berne's early recordings still sound fresh, vital and interesting to my ears.

That sounds wonderful. Lucky you. The Argo/Cadet pressing. On 2nd look, that cover is pretty odd, isn't it. I mean, where's the "J"? And:

Cadence/Klompfoot Shipping Question
Leeway replied to colinmce's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I think they are selling some CIMP titles directly through Amazon as a reseller, usually at $15.98 a title, and usual Amazon shipping charges prevail. But the Klompfoot operation is wholesale. Get on their mailing list; they have sales from time to time. -
Cadence/Klompfoot Shipping Question
Leeway replied to colinmce's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Yes, that is the case. Unless they have a special sale and waive the requirement. Essentially, Cadence is still a wholesale operation; they supply a lot of other outlets (well, those that still exist). They have importation arrangements with a lot of labels and function as the distributor. Not easy ordering from Cadence, CIMP or Klompfoot (where one ends and the other begins is still a bit of a mystery to me). -

Among the long list of musicians participating in the recording, I find Seldon Powell, which really surprised me. Maybe it shouldn't? Just seemed odd to find him with the Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell crowd.

Been getting into some Jim Pepper recently. Picked up some CDs with him on them, posted those over in the listening thread. I like one in particular with Mal Waldron. I have a few LPs as well. Anthony Braxton - B-X0 NO-47A - Actuel 15 - 1969 Cheesy BYG reissue, but serves its purpose. Braxton in Pre-Cardigan era.

It's the bassist's trio but fits the requirements: GIVE AND TAKE - John Lindberg (b), Barry Altschul (d), George Lewis (tb). I was actually surprised by this one. Plus BassDrum Bone has about half dozen albums together in that trio formation.

Yeah, I go for Boykin whenever possible. Definitely. Don't have any vinyl though, when did this one come from? Not relevant, but are he and Nicole Mitchell still married? Boykin came to the last Vision Festival (so did Nicole Mitchell for that matter, they played in "Sonic Projections" together) and brought a couple of copies of this LP with him, so picked it up. Was new to me too.

My impression is that Connie's playing is very situational. When she plays with someone like Tabnik, it gets more buttoned down, more modulated, more compositional, perhaps one can say more apparently Tristano-ish, while still retaining an improvisatory spirit. In solo performances, it tends to get more ecstatic and energy-driven (although I think the core is still Tristano-ish). In impromptu group settings, she plays somewhere in between these positions, reacting to what others are doing. At least that's the way I've seen her over some years.
