  8. They do, but they can charge more, usually $50-$60 for "personalized" plates, at the request of the motorist. Otherwise you get letter-number combos. Just a lot of weird folks in NC Just kidding--all 50 states have this issue.
  9. Decided to drive up from DC to Philadelphia for the "Celebrating Cecil Taylor" show, sponsored jointly by Ars Nova and Painted Bride. As a celebration it was a bit odd: no documentary clips, no interviews, no benediction from the Master, etc. As a marketing strategy, it was prescient: Painted Bride was sold out. What there was, though, was a group of Cecil alumni - Andrew Cyrille, Henry Grimes, William Parker, Bobby Zankel--who put on a killer concert. Yes, include Dave Burrell too, not exactly a Cecil alum, more of a makeshift Cecil in place of actual Cecil. They played hard, and they played long, a little over 2 hours with a short intermission. Zankel, whom I've not seen before, sounded inspired--or maybe he always plays like this- but he played his ass off. Cyrille had a masterful 10 minute solo. Grimes sounded like back in the day. Parker added thunder to Grimes bass, creating a deep pulse throughout the evening. And Burrell played free and fast yet without coming off like a Cecil clone. He's got his own thing. It was an exciting evening. Still a little groggy from I-95, cheesesteaks, great music, and a late night return, but ---worth it.

  13. That's a good point about the artwork. I doubt seriously that these guys have access to master tapes. My guess is that they use one of those TT with a digital out, then a little equalization, then onto a CD. Who knows, it might be OK. A laser copy of the cover art, perhaps leaving out a detail or two for copyright reasons. Looking forward to reports from jhoots and others.

  15. I've never seen that label before, but how is that not more or less Frank Lowe? Also interesting (such as it is) that Billy Harper had the inaugural releases for both Black Saint & Soul Note. Lowe is a good bet, but I also thought there was an outside chance it could be Ayler: Here's Lowe again: I did notice that Harper had the inaugural releases for both Black Saint and Soul Note, and I thought that was putting a lot of reliance on one artist by a new label. That distinction has helped widen my perspective on, and appreciation of, Harper. And he did turn out some really fine albums for them.

  21. I don't know who she is, but she's also the cover model for Don Pullen's Healing Force LP on Black Saint (same pic, I'd assume, but cropped for the label design). That's right. I have that album. I thought she looked familiar.
