Yes, Rudd tops the list for me. An incredible player. I saw him at Vision Fest last year and, even ill, he played extraordinarily well. I might say he is a wonderful musician, whereas others are often "just" fine trombonists (no shame in that, but no glory either).

That has been my reaction to Blaser as well. He just does not light any fuses for me. So I will be quite interested in your response to this latest disc.

Prices on the first two Muntu LPs are insane lately - don't know why, they're strong but not impossible to find - but it's all worth digging into. The Cadence is easy to obtain and cheap/still in print, and the Soul Notes are also generally cheap and in as-new if not "new" condition. The Eremite CDs are all killer, too. I like the Poljazz pretty well but the pressing is turd-like (unsurprisingly). I must have got s bit lucky on my PolJazz, mine's not that bad, although it will never be mistaken for an audiophile release. Still, I loved the performance and so would recommend it. As for early Muntu, I really like the Muntu 3-CD box on No Business.

Yes, and perhaps even generally too. I don't really understand that.

That looks very interesting indeed I like the looks of Discs 1 and 2 quite a bit, Disc 3 not so much.

love that cow story. Often wondered whether this was an LP to track down. Often thought it a mighty strange cover. btw image not displaying for me but i know the cover because of your story. The cows had the same look for me and Moondoc -blandly observant . I tried another image, hopefully it comes up. I liked the album, especially first side, Side 2 excellent also, but matter of taste whether Ellen Christi voicings appeal (she does not dominate the side, only occasional voicings). I thought she was exciting and more tuneful than Irene Aebi (for example). Cadence might even have copies of this album left over. I've picked up several of their titles as remainders. Not usually expensive anyway. Last Moondoc LP. I've listened to 5 in a row and was never bored or dulled. All a little different, all with a lot of ideas and energy. Illuminating to hear Roy Campbell play back in the day. KONSTANZE's DELIGHT - Jemeel Moondoc Sextet: Moondoc (as), Roy Campbell (tp). Khan Jamal (vibes), Wm Parker (b), Dennis Charles (d), Ellen Christ (voice). 1981. Another exciting Moondoc album. I like the addition of Khan Jamal. provides nice texture. Ellen Christi likes to get in there and mix it up with Roy Campbell it seems.

NEW YORK LIVE! - Jemeel Moondoc and Muntu. Cadence Jazz Record LP. 1981. Moondoc (as), Roy Campbell (tp), William Parker (b), Rashid Bakr (d), Ellen Christi (voice, Side 2). Side 1 live 10/24/81, live at the Public Theatre, NYC, Side 2, live at Studio Henry, 4/2/81. Nicely riotous performance of "Salt Peanuts" (!) on Side 1, Ellen Christi rips it up on Side 2. A lot of energy in this album. I have to laugh whenever I see this cover photo. Having grown up in NYC, I did not see a cow in the flesh until I was in my early 20s! (seriously). Driving down a country lane at the time, I saw a herd of cows grazing near the fence line. I had my new wife take a picture of me posed before the cow herd. Moondoc must have had something of the same feeling.

Name some Blue Note cds you find overrated
Leeway replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Recommendations
When I was really back in Blue Note mode, before Organissimo got started and while the BNBB was going strong, I used to check out the Penguin Guide. I was often incensed, or at least puzzled, by how they awarded 2 or 2 1/2, maybe 3 on occasion to Blue Notes that seemed so great. I figured they had a bias that carried through the BN catalog. Then I myself started to move away from BNs, into more "out" music. Gradually, BNs became less interesting to me, until I stopped listening altogether for a couple/several years. Whatever it was that locked me in originally was no longer operative. Only fairly recently have I been able to go back and listen, not as a BN fan (from fan-atic) but as a music fan. Some things still work strongly for me, especially the more "out" material. But now I think I see some justice in the Penguin listings. I'm not trying to justify all of their reviews, nor mount a wholesale defense of TPG, but generally their scale seems to me fairly accurate now. I doubt TPG overrated too many BNs. It may be what we are talking about is the consensus among fans. As we move generationally further away from the generation(s) that produced the music, perspectives are bound to change. Critical consensus is usually one thing, popular consensus os usually another. All they can do is contribute to a shift in momentum, one way or another. Bottom line though is we are going to listen to what we enjoy. -

NOSTALGIA IN TIMES SQUARE - Jemeel Moondoc Quintet: Moondoc (as, ss), Bern Nix (g), Rahn Burton (p), William Parker (b), Dennis Charles (d). Soul Note LP. 1985. I like this album, but I don't care much for Rahn Burton's playing, which I think much too conventional for the context.

THE INTREPID - LIVE IN POLAND - Jemeel Moondoc Muntu - PolJazzLP. 1981. Moondoc (as), Roy Campbell (tp), William Parker (b), Rashid Baker (d). A very cool and youthfully vigorous performance.

"JUDY'S BOUNCE" - Jemeel Moondoc Trio, Moondoc, Fred Hopkins, Ed Blackwell. Soul Note LP. I like this album. Apologies if I'm stating the obvious, but this and so many other works of this type are shot through with Ornette's "language." His influence is so pervasive.

Are free jazz ringtones really free?
Leeway replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
No free lunches, no free ring tones. Yes, most of those sites tie you to some contract, which can get expensive and/or annoying. Have you tried iTunes? Also, labels will sometimes offer ringtones to promote their catalog. Don't know if Blue Note does, but maybe worth checking. Let me know if you find any Brotzmann ring tones -
