That's too bad. Maybe give it a 2nd listen later. I would be curious as to what did not work for you on the album. Nothing wrong with the album; as much as i've prided myself on the past in having broad taste in jazz i'm just not digging (what sounds like) atonal free improv stuff at the moment. I'm sure my ears will rotate back around again at some point but at the moment it's pearls before swine. Just having another listen now; up to track 5... i could see myself warming to this, but whatever Roscoe was doing on that first track, that was some real nails on chalkboard stuff to my ears. Ha ha, i've seriously lost my edge. Another random point, as much as i think Spotify is great for checking stuff out, i don't feel invested as a listener unless i've purchased the album. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and reactions. No right or wrong here. Nice of you to listen again. I went back to that first track to see what was up with that chalk on a board feeling. Yes, Roscoe does play in some pretty high registers, I think partly to shock (wake-up) and partly to stimulate. Keep in mind the title is "Knock and Roll," so a very dynamic piece might be expected. I actually found that track totally kick-ass, incredibly intense and dynamic. The other tracks take you through a variety of musical ideas, and it's that ideation that attracts me to his work. I came to Roscoe through the AEC, so maybe that acclimatized me to his music. Anyway, it's rare that I do not find something compelling in Roscoe's work, but this latest album strikes me as quite strong. Not everyone feels the same way, I suppose...one man's meat, and all that.....

OK, thanks. Apparently home ground offers no advantages-- unless MJAZZG has a different take on it. I suspect many go to EBAY and end up far from home. Now for something a bit different: L'ATLAS DES GALAXIES ETRANGES - Live at The Shot Gun Gallery in Strasbourg, France1993. Non Mi Place Records Borbetomagus - Jim Sauter (sax), Don Dietrich (sax), Donald Miller (electric guitar). Borbetomagus phenomenon: First 30 seconds all-out aural assault. One is knocked for loop. Neighbors may already be banging on door, ceiling, floor. Next ten minutes, feel like caught in machine works. Neighbors definitely banging away. 10+ minutes in, starting to make sense. Ideas and motifs rise and fall, like creatures in Sargasso Sea. 15+ minutes- an addictive sensation takes over, you need this sound (no longer noise) YMMV.

On of my favourite records. And I still only own it on vinyl (though it has been CD-r-ised...and mp3'd)!!!!!!! Yes, I have that one on CD too, and it is a good one. It seems to have got some circulation here on vinyl, but the other ones that MJAZZG posted - just don't see them. Just wondering if this is fairly common fare in UK.

Here are some clips of Anti-House Live. They play some lower-case type music (not strictly lower-case), which is what I think Steve is referring to, but they also play energy music. I think the purpose of the ensemble is to draw on the individual musicians for a collective approach, not just a free blowing session (although I like those too!). Anyway, I really like this group. Here are some clips of Anti-House Live. One can see different approaches the group takes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0K2OLo4QAk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSeWgyUC1Gs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqPcNsX30JU

Another good one from No Business (and this one is still in print ): THE MAJOR - Nobuyasu Furuya Quintet - No Business LP-- Furuya (ts, fl, cl), Rodrigo Pinheiro (p), Eduardo Lalo (tb), Hernani Faustino (b), Gabriel Ferrandini (d, perc). (essentially Furuya with the RED Trio with Lalo added on trombone). This is a good one!

I think that's the right decision. I saw Eskelin last week, and he was, frankly, disappointing.

What are the markings of an original issue? My cover looks the same but is missing the Paul Haines booklet and I'm not sure what pressing/label details constitute a first pressing.. You can check here, might answer your questions: http://www.discogs.com/Albert-Ayler-Trio-Spiritual-Unity/release/1141294 http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=1141294 Just played: THE INDIVIDUALISM OF GIL EVANS - GIL EVANS AND GROUP(s) - Verve LP.

I like her quite a bit, and she really shines in live performance. Not sure if you heard these, but they are a fair representation of her work: Tom Rainey Trio - Pool School- with Mary Halvorson and Laubrock - Clean Feed Paradoxical Frog - Kris Davis, Tyshawn Sorey, Ingrid Laubrock - Clan Feed Ingrid Laubrock Anti-House - IL, Mary Halvorson, John Hebert, Tom Rainey, Kris Davis - Intakt There are others to follow up on if you like these; conversely, if you don't, no reason to go further. Tom Rainey is playing extremely well these days. It should be a good show.

I've got the Braxton House CDs but did not know about this LP. Interesting! Curious as to sound quality? It sounds good. Definitely one of Braxton's best alto solo albums. I believe Brandon Evans ranked it as is favourite. Apparently, co-producer Velibor Pedevski opted to release it on vinyl because it sounded much better than the proposed CD. It was supposed to have been released with the original Braxton House CDs back in 1996 or '97, but it didn't come out until 2003. I can understand that As I recall. the CDs are just adequate in sound quality; however, some excellent ensembles and performances, so I'm glad to have them. Have to keep an eye out for that LP. Thanks. Just played my first Gaslini album. I liked it: GIOGIO GASLINI MEETS ....JEAN-LUC PONTY, STEVE LACY, HARRY BECKET, TONY OXLEY, GIANNI BEDORI, BRUNO TOMMASO, PAUL RUTHERFORD. PAUSA LP.

Well, I finished Anthony Burgess' Malayan Trilogy: Time for a Tiger, The Enemy in the Blanket, and Beds in the East. I found it quite interesting and sufficiently entertaining. The books likely had a topical interest at the time of publication, at which time the British were ceding control of their southeast Asian possessions, but is still relevant now as Burgess expends a good deal of attention on Moslem culture. The novels are filled with a sort of mordant humor, always a bit mocking in tone. Burgess' love of wordplay and vocabulary is already evident. Within a short span of pages, I noted the following words: hypnopaedia, crepuscular, rhotacigmus, omphalic, ingurgitation, exopthalmic. It's not all like that, but a reader is likely to trip over one of these every handful of pages or so. A segue to Joseph Conrad's southeast Asian fiction would probably make sense, but I'll stick with Burgess for a while. Just starting: THE DOCTOR IS SICK - Anthony Burgess

Isn't that a Klingon avatar? Looks like it to me. If so, this should be meaningful: http://www.kli.org/tlh/sounds/qoSlIj.au Translated from the Klingon, it means: Happy Birthday!
