  1. But that was on a different label!?!? I really don't understand this...this is a collection of his Prestige recordings!!! Why should there be anything from his Columbia sessions? Perhaps you're painting with much too broad a brush...to think that this set should COMPLETELY document this quintet...?
  2. I have a mono lp of Coltrane's "My Favorite Things." I think it sounds incredible, and I prefer it over the stereo version.
  3. Haven't laughed this hard in a while...thanks!!! :tup
  4. Thanks, bud. Are these what you are referring to? Comments taken from this SITE. Mar. 24, 2004 “Blue Note 65th Anniversary” Series, Limited Edition, by Toshiba EMI Our dream has come true - Toshiba EMI decided to release Blue Note reissues even in this year 2004! This series (20 titles) is to celebrate Blue Note's 65th anniversary. And this series has several specialities... This is the first Japanese LP reissues ever, from the tapes mastered by Rudy Van Gelder himself. And it must be noted that the cutting engineer of this series is the famous Toru Kotetsu, a superb cutting/pressing engineer in Japan. However in my humble opinion, this series actually sounds like that they are pressed using the same remastered tape as “24bit by RVG” CD reissues: stereo mixing has been changed to near-monaural soundscape; I feel the atmosphere of hiss-noise and cymbals sounds rather digitally. But it's not certain whether Toshiba used newly remastered analogue tape or digitally remastered tape. And all titles of this series come with coated cardboard jackets, as well as 180g heavy-weight thick flat vinyls. UPDATE (Aug. 15, 2004): I found an interesting (and very important) article on a Japanese vacuum-tube quarterly magazine “Kankyu Oukoku” (The Tube Kingdom) Vol.33 (2004 Summer). On this magazine, there is a special article regarding this newest Toshiba LP reissues - auditioning these LPs, comparing the sounds with old Toshiba LPs, King LPs, Connoisseur LPs and original issues (such as 47 West 63rd), etc. Interestingly, the writer concludes that this newest Toshiba LP issue deliver the “atmosphere” of RVG's sound. On the other hand, the writer had an interview with Tohru Kotetsu (cutting engineer) and he confirmed this LP series was pressed from 3/4-inch digital tape remasetered by RVG. Ooooh, they sound poopy...
  5. For that price, these should be purrrrfect... Thanks for checking. I've got the Mosaic cd set, and it sounds fine on there. I remember you saying that, so I'm gonna steer clear of that one, too. Any comment on the Hipp/Sims, Wolff? Surely you got it, right?
  6. Hey gang, I'm seeking opinions on this reissue. I picked one up a week or so ago, a complete impulse buy, from the Virgin Megastore in downtown Denver. I even paid full retail price!!! (or more; it was $33.99!!! ) But it had a SEVERE sibilance problem. Absolutely unlistenable, especially Side 1 where the ride cymbal sounded like water hitting the deep-fryer... Argghh!! I'm trying to determine if this is an isolated incident, or if it's truly a bad pressing? I was able to return it for store credit, which I'll probably use to order "Jutta Hipp & Zoot Sims." So, how was yours?
  7. Bump! Surely someone know the answer...?
  8. Oops, just re-read the first post... March 9. I am an idiot...
  9. Okay, we're now officially having a hoedown!!! Where the fuck is Ornette?
  10. Okay, but since it was 2-track stereo does that mean there was nothing in the middle...or phantom center? Cuz if there's nothing in the center, it should fold-down well, right? I thought fold-downs of stereo tracks causes any information in the center to become too loud...i.e. vocals, bass, et al? So if there is nothing in the true center, perhaps it is an acceptable way to create mono? Anyone? Buehler?
  11. I picked up the Orbitrac2 system as well, Patricia. It's actually better to clean the records with this system on a regular table/flat surface instead of on your turntable. I've been getting decent results, too. PM me if you need help.
  12. Yeah, but right now they're playing an Irish jig...
  13. Well, not nicely anyways... -_-
  14. It can't be done! Frustrating as hell, ain't it?
  15. Hi Andy, I just found out about the update on that site. I was gonna post here, but you already did...nearly 2 months ago! I'm reprinting the inserts now.
  16. Movin' & Groovin' was announced as being part of Classic Records reissues for 2006. It will be mine... God, I love that cover...but this isn't the best scan. I'm hoping for a beautiful purple on the Classic...
  17. The liner notes for one of 'em, the 80's pressing I think, seemed to state that the title track is really the most successful track on the session...I can't tell is that is meant as a slight towards the other tracks or not?
  18. Aren't there versions by Bill Evans, too?
  19. Happy Birthday, buddy. Here's wishing you the best! :rsmile:
  20. That picture he posted of "Monster" scares me...
  21. Ya know, I recently got the Classic Records 200gm MONO version of this and I have to say, I much prefer the stereo mix over the mono one. Just something about how Teena & Freddie blend their horns but then make little statements outside of that blend that the stereo mix just makes 'em jump out of the speakers. The mono just doesn't do this...
  22. Happy Belated Birthday, Michael! Hope it was a good one...
  23. I believe there's a listing on Peter Losin's Miles ahead site, but it appears to be down at the present time...
  24. Kevin, The Classic DAD is real nice, too... And I recently picked up the Classic 180gm cuz I could get it for $12.50. It's very fine, as well. I'm gonna try to overlook what I read here re: the squeak. That stuff can bother me too. I hope I don't hear it , darn it. That title track is quite a burner, though...
  25. Wow Tom...lot's of nice stuff... I've placed several on my watch list.
