New Album of the Week: Charles Mingus, Mingus x 5
Parkertown replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Album Of The Week
Oh crap!!! I don't have this one! I've got "Black Saint & Sinner Lady" tho. But it just ain't reachin' me...I tried again on Monday... -
Thanks for posting that Robert J! I'm definitely gonna have to track that DVD down...hopefully at my library. I recently purchased the Mosaic set as well, and have been taking it in slowly. But damn!, the first track off the set blew me away! (It's not in front of me now) The playing is amazing, especially that cascading set of riffs he does in a out-of-time fashion! Jaw on the floor!

When you have snow like this, there's not much else to do... -
Album of the week: Wayne Shorter - The All Seeing
Parkertown replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
And you're sure you've listened all you care to? This is one that took several listens to reveal itself to me. (But I agree about the Byrd albums, ). Are you a big free-jazz fan? I know you're way into "modern" jazz (hard bop, etc...) but I'm not sure if I recall you commenting much on 'outside' types of music...?? -

Still listening...once all the way through the other day. I want to give at least one more listen first before contributing. But I wanted to say that this one went right over my head when I first picked it up. It has only been in the last 4-5 listens that it is really starting to open up for me. I'm really diggin' it! Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere! B) -
Umm, actually I meant One Step Beyond. That's the JRVG I have. I've got the Connoisseur of Destination Out!
-
Good point. I'm on the fence as well about this set. I have all of the music, in good remasterings, except for 'Bout Soul and of course, Hipnosis. But I've a JRVG of Destination Out as well that could perhaps fund this purchase...

Gee, how does one get to hear this recording......?

AfricaBrass: I've always thought the same thing. The background vocals on Shania's/Mutt's last two albums are total "Def Leppard" background vocals. Sounds just like "Pour Some Sugar On Me"! I actually loved Shania's second and third albums. This latest is actually pretty good. Would've been much better if they eliminated about 7 or 8 songs from it though. 19 songs!?!? Too much... I'm a firm believer in the "leave 'em wanting more" school of thought. Some of the songs are great, IMO, but they all pretty much follow the same formula of her previous records. No new ground being broken here. And yeah, this ain't really country music; it's pop music with a twangggg.

That cover for "Inta Something" is best when viewed full-size. I had the Connoisseur and thought it was cool, but when I finally got a copy of the 12x12 Blue Note Cover Art book, the cover for that album blew me away!!! God I miss lp's! For the art...I don't miss pops and clicks...

Wow! Thanks Mike, that's really cool to know. Jim: Your piano is definitely getting some mileage. That's great, but I've only heard of a few of the musicians you mentioned. I need to branch out...
-
Thanks couw! I have done so and it looks better. Still dorky, but better...
-
Hi Jim, Has anyone recorded on your piano yet in it's new home?
-
Thanks to one of the coolest members of this board (you know who you are ), I just recently snagged a copy of the TOCJ that has an extra session from, I think, 1969. It's really good as well but hasn't really sunk in with me yet. Opinions from those that have heard this? I'm more familiar with the original session from the Connoisseur copy I own and agree it's a fine date with sublime compositions. Elegant ice n fire!!

Okay, it's official, I am now truly a dork and everyone knows it! Thanks again Jeff!

I'll try, as it is snowing again here. -
No wait...that's just way too stoopid-looking! Who is that dork?

Can anyone suggest a program or a way for me to resize an animated GIF? I have one I would like to try and use but it's too large and when I resize it using Image Expert 2000 and MS Photo Editor the new smaller image only contains the first image of the animation, which I believe contains like 8 or 9 images. Any help would be greatly appreciated... Here's the image:

I'm gonna delete this topic tomorrow, if no one objects? -
AC/DC write great, evil-sounding, sexually provocative songs that instantly turn you back into a fist-pounding, hormone-raging teenager when you hear it cranked up! Power-chord craftsman who keep it simple and to the point. No philosophical meanderings, just ass-kicking slash-n-burn. Both eras are great, IMO, but I lost interest for a little while in the Phil Rudd-less years. That bald drummer on the double Live album is pretty good, but he's no Phil Rudd. I'm really glad he's back. Of the new remasters, I've only picked up Highway To Hell. It totally delivers! Only selected titles have been released so far, with more to follow in April and May. Hard to believe the stuff Mutt Lange is writing/producing with Shania when you hear his stamp on AC/DC. All killer, no filler! I must agree that Steven Tyler almost ruined AC/DC's set at the RNRHOF ceremony. I think he's just enthusiastic, but they are different bags. I really got started listening to them with Back In Black, when I was 15. Some of my fondest memories are being in the back seat of a high-school buddy's '73 Cutlass in the high school parking lot, stoned out of my brain, totally blown away by Brian Johnson's scream of "FIRE!!!!" echoing into outer-space during the part of "For Those About To Rock" when the tempo goes into overdrive. Oh, I can just close my eyes and I'm transported. They kick so much ass, they will continue to blow teenage minds for years to come!

What music besides jazz do you listen to?
Parkertown replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Hey B3er, I'm a HUGE Genesis fan as well. Love all their stuff. But I was introduced to the Phil Collins era first and then discovered the Gabriel era. I loved Phil's interpretations of Gabriel era songs on the live "Seconds Out" album. That's how I first heard "The Carpet Crawlers", "The Lamb Lies Down", "Firth Of Fifth", and "Suppers Ready". When I did finally hear the original studio versions with Gabriel, they took me a little while to adjust to. But I did, and really love both eras. But the drumming by Chester Thompson and Bill Bruford on that "Seconds Out" album is just amazing! And when Phil joins in on his kit, it becomes a tour-de-force!! Incredible interplay! LUV that stuff... -
Two thumbs, way up, on the backup singers!!! Well, specifically, Mrs. Leonhart, or however you spell it. What a knockout! Hubba, hubba... It's a really good set; great sound...performances...IMHO...

Get out there! Eat it up, impossible. Enjoy!

Chris Olivarez, Nice to see you made it. Hadn't seen you since the demise of the BNBB. Did you guys get it in Pagosa Springs? And yeah, I've spent a few huevos-freezing nights in Alamosa before...think I got snowed in there.
