  1. Thanks Roundsound! No big deal, I was kidding with my second post above... We leave tomorrow, but the other day we found a place in Winter Park, FL on Park Ave called Park Avenue Compact Discs. Cool people, cool store, and I found about 5 oop Blue Notes there and good prices on new releases...like those new UMG (lpr series?) like the Jim Hall Live, Ayler, etc. for just $9.98! I spent $90 so that kinda blew my cd budget for a while! This thread on the AAJ board got a response where they called Central Florida a jazz wasteland...
  2. I really like the sound on the Revolver cd. That's the only one I have of this series. Hey Hans, Aren't the dates you mention actually refer to the span of the release, like it's only available for 2 years...? That's how I've always interpreted those dates. I usually see them always span 2 years, on most Japanese releases/reissues.
  3. Anyone know some good ones that specialize in Japanese imports? Thanks in advance, Later,
  4. I think Hipnosis is on Alankin's Jazzmatazz site as coming out late 2003 or 2004. If that's the case... Anyone got a " 'Bout Soul" I can purchase? And I'll pass on the Moncur Select as well, since I have all but Hipnosis & 'Bout Soul.
  5. OH MY GOD!!! That has to be some of the wackiest shit I've ever, ever read in my life! He's either a brilliant genius, or a whacked-out psycho-killer! Makes Wingy seem tame...though he's reformed now, no?
  6. Thanks for all the tips everyone! (esp. you, BFrank!) Something else I just noticed is that the new version 2.0 of the Download Manager now limits the number of tracks or albums you may queue up. I just got halted trying to add a 4th album to the queue. Crap!!! I've loaded that puppy up with about 15-20 albums at once before...maybe that's why...
  7. I've really enjoyed this series, as it was my first exposure to most of these artists. Will listen more this weekend before voting but... It seems I recall the last time I listened to the Watkins disc, it had a lot of digital artifacts in the sound of the horns, especially Mr. Watkins FH. You hear this kind of stammering sound on the horns that is very unnatural sounding, like a reverb-echo if that makes any sense. It's the same kind of sound I hear on Curtis Fuller's horn on the "Blue Train" cd. Very annoying, but I'll try to ignore it...
  8. Well, I'm seriously considering it. I think they're beautiful paintings. Love the colors...
  9. Her signature is cool!
  10. Oh No! Totally lame, but totally funny!
  11. So far, I only have : Life is Splendid Music From Tomorrow's World (which I'm listening to now) Nothing Is Nuclear War I've really only given Life Is Splendid a serious couple of listens and I groove to that. I enjoy the energy; kept me motivated at work the other day. I need to spend more time with the others. I got these four through my subscription to Emusic. What's the consensus on these? I've read that John Gilmore produced powerful solos on the Sun Ra recordings; that interests me-what should I look for? Thanks guys!
  12. I've had this for a little while now, and have listened about 2 1/2 times so far. Sounds like they had a lot of fun, but I may have to agree about the quantity of McFerrin duets. But, I have to say I'm not ready to make that judgment just yet; need more listening. I must say that, IMO, the multichannel mix of this Hybrid disc is sumptuous! Beautifully recorded; I'll be spending more time with this over the weekend. Package also included (which I've already misplaced) a reply card if interested in a possible DVD/VHS release of the ENTIRE 9 set show! Seems like a wonderfully ambitious project. I hope it's successful. Hybrid set (single inventory release) is priced reasonable at I believe around $22.99. Go get one!
  13. I'm gonna get started listening today so I can finally participate in this AOTW stuff.
  14. Finally got a copy of "Total Eclipse" in the mail today. Wow, diggin' it so far... B) Oh, and "Conquistador" is on the way. Another elusive one!
  15. It might need a poke, too...
  16. I've seen "Destination Out". I think a local vinyl store (Wax Trax) still has a couple. And maybe "Foxhole" as well.
  17. I'm ashamed to admit I love my PS2. I just completed the final missions of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Tons 'o fun! If only I made that kind of moula in real life! Also plays DVDs and DTS cds, DVD-Audio as well I think (just the Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks-it is NOT a DVD-Audio player). Oh, and of course, plain 'ol CDs...
  18. Many thanks CJ and Sundog! Thanks for helping me with my learning... I don't really understand it yet though, but I will try to listen to the tracks mentioned and apply what you've said.
  19. CJ: In all my jazz listening so far, I've not been able to ascertain exactly what "rhythm changes" sound like. I know it means it is based on the chord progression of "I Got Rhythm" but I can't say I know that song (that's pre-1950, right? Not an era I have listened to much) and haven't been able to isolate the pattern. So, whatever you have learned recently that made it "click" for you, I'd greatly appreciate you sharing that info. Thanks!
  20. Thanks BFrank! B)
  21. Yep, Barnes & Barnes; I believe you're right. My wife won't watch that one. Kinda follows the oft repeated credo: The only thing cooler than bands that get chicks, are bands that SCARE chicks... And I totally forgot about Rainbow in the 80's. That is a great video. I really like the Joe Lynn Turner years. Hey: Does anyone remember when MTV used to have a live concert every Saturday night? I recall an awesome Rainbow concert circa Straight Between The Eyes. The band was layin' it down, and Blackmore seemed like he was tripping out, perhaps chemically induced, perhaps not...But he played the gitar like a demon possessed! This is one I remember. There were lots of other great concerts broadcast on Saturdays. They should re-broadcast those. Perhaps an email...
  22. Weizen: You're welcome. Glad you finally got a copy. Enjoy!
  23. That song mentioned above is "Fish Heads" and was done by a duo (can't remember the name right now) that included the guy who had been little Will Robinson on "Lost In Space". Does anyone get the channel VH-1 Classic? It can be very addicting at times. Sometimes they get on a roll, and play great blocks of classic videos. Takes you back... That said, I recently got to see the video for Poison's "Fallen Angel". Ooh, that chick in the video is a hottie! Guilty pleasure? Definitely! Oh, and also recently..."That's Good!" by DEVO!!! Oh my God!!! They show a banana (or something) penetrate a donut!
