... until a complete stranger decides to go "shopping" at your house or that of someone you know. In my case, Sunday afternoon after we went to lunch... they were in the house within 30 minutes of our departure which is spookier than the actual break in. Sorry for the bitterness. On the good side, no one was hurt, they didn't get away with much as our neighbor's saw the broken window and called the police, and they didn't trash the place. Only thing lost was the video tape in our camcorder of my son from 2 years to date (about 7 months of footage). Oh, and I get my choice of new laptop :-)

Now that it's presumably over, care to post the link for those of us too lazy to search for it?

I'm lucky in that a lot of the non-jazz I follow is usually released on LP and I almost always go for the vinyl if it's available. (R.E.M., Elliot Smith, Belle & Sebastian, Death Cab for Cutie, etc... still trying to get a UK copy of Paul Weller's latest though) I've held off and only listened to the new Wilco via the 'net. The LP release has been pushed back a couple of times, but it's supposed to finally come out next week. Parlan should show up next week. I left a message for the Hodges, but I'm guessing I won't hear back until after the holiday. As far as the Waits goes, I like this one better than Mule Variations by a mile. I've had the One From the Heart soundtrack on the brain lately and while this is a departure from the Waits songs from the movie, it's still enjoyable.

I remember seeing both the Studio and Live Baker / Freeman sessions as add on's to trumpet instruction auctions. I was out of town and in mid flight when the auctions ended, but I recall they both went for less than $100. Not sure why the auction was set up that way. First thought was that he was trying to unload the instruction books and maybe bump up the shipping and handling costs (this was before the flat media rates). Whatever... someone got a good deal, just hope they played trumpet!

What's the consensus on #126 The Complete Johnny Hodges Recordings 1951-1955 (6 LPs) ? I have an opportunity locally to purchase this set. I tried a Completed Items search on ebay but nothing came up. I was thinking of offering $150? Does anyone have a complete discography of this set? Looks like Mosaic pulled that info since it's OOP.

Not sure how I missed this thread, but thanks for the heads up! That Xmas bonus sure comes in handy.

Does Sears still own / operate Land's End? I never owned Land's End merch until Sears began carrying it. At that point, we've purchased the occaisional LE piece, but usually direct through the web / catalog and not at Sears. I do purchase the occaisional toolset and baby wear / supplies there. I have a Wal-mart about a mile from my house but almost always choose to shop at a Target 5 miles further. Target's product line and house brands seem to be a better quality than Wal-Mart's. Of course, they're all probably made in the same factory in China. I don't necessarily agree that Wal-mart has captured the high-end suburban market. I think they've made in roads, but I would credit Sam's with taking that market for them then WM. What market KM had in the St. Louis area has definitely been taken by WM and Target. WM seems a horizontal move while Target for those who have "graduated" from the KM/WM years. As far as out WM-ing WM, I think Target has shown the way with the "value added" model. Their items are rougly the same price, perhaps a tad more expensive, but have a higher cache given the designers and more "upscale" lines they offer. I can't recall the name of the toy store, but I read about a small chain that was competing well with the largest toy seller in the USA. They're "value added" exercise wasn't to price cut with WM, but to offer more unique customer service options: call your toy order ahead, they'll deliver your bagged / boxed/ wrapped purchases to your car while you wait in the lot... I'm sure busy mom's or shopping phobic dad's appreciate it.

Tough to ignore Bragg's politics with overt references to Mao's Great Leap Forward, songs with titles of Thatcherites and Take Down the Union Jack, and the acceptance of his plan for reform in the House of Lords, etc... All that said, I'm a huge Bragg fan and recommend the bio Still Suitable for Miners in addition to his catalog. Favorites include Back to Basics, Workers Playtime, William Bloke, and the Mermaid Avenue sessions with Wilco.

Coltrane Prestige box-VICJ version
spinlps replied to Raoul Duke's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Wow. Don't get me wrong... I love the Prestige sides, but no Impulse? No Atlantic? You need 'em all IMO to hear the progression of an amazing voice. Living with just the Prestige sides would be like stopping at Miles' first quintet and ignoring the 2nd and 3rd! Waaaayyyyy too much to be missed. -
I'm leaning towards the Keezer and the Mehldau sessions as well. I think my GC at Red Trumpet should cover both.

Folks on other listservs / forums seem to get good results from the Alesis Masterlink CD Recorder. It has a built in hard drive. I think you record to the HD first, edit / manipulate the recording, then burn to the built in recorder.

Just put on Chico Freeman's Spirit Sensitive. Haven't listened to this one in ages but it gets me everytime.

WOW wolff! Thanks for the info... that will definitely go a long way for the holiday gifts to self.

Any recommendations on where to start with these labels? Kind of pricey for new releases, but I'd like to support anyone putting out good, new LP releases so I'm giving it a shot. Judging from the covers, should I move this to the Babes thread?

I got mine from amazon.uk Good service & good price (if they still have it). Excellent! Just ordered the set for about $52 delivered from the UK. Thanks!

Anyone recommend an online shop with this in stock? I've checked the usual suspects and it's listed as a special order, not in stock item. Could it be sold out already?

Impulsive Jazz Album Buying Syndrome
spinlps replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous Music
My biggest problem is the classic "enabler" syndrome... Hmmm... I have a taste for a smoothie, maybe I'll head to Smoothie King. Not the one closest to the office, nor the one closest to home, definitely the one NEXT to Vintage Vinyl. I can't very well stand in SK and drink my smoothie, maybe I'll walk around outside... or in VV! Same goes for trips to Euclid... I can't go to the ice cream shop a few blocks from the house, I HAVE to make the 30 minute drive to Serendipity which just happens to be a block from Euclid Records. Damn those frozen treats! -
Still working on this crap... Decided to follow the Kenny Dorham as sideman theme today... Played the Jordan's Starting Time this morning. This afternoon has seen: Oliver Nelson - Meet Oliver Nelson Joe Henderson - Page One Phil Woods - Pairing Off Ernie Henry - Presenting Ernie Henry More to come unless a stroke of inspiration hits anytime soon...

Working on a document management migration solution today... yuck. At least I can spin while I'm at home. Started with Redd's Blues on CD, but switched to the TT. So far this morning: McCoy Tyner - Today and Tomorrow (Green ABC Label Impulse) The Go Betweens - Bright Yellow Bright Orange Clifford Jordan - Starting Time (OJC... inspired by the Dorham thread) Helen Merrill - The Nearness of You (Japanese Emarcy)

For the non-jazz crowd, REM have a free CD available on their site ( http://www.remhq.com ) which has remixed versions of songs from the Reveal album. Besides music, I've downloaded interviews or special radio programming and copied them to my ipod for later listening.

Webster Records is about 6 blocks from the new Euclid location. I've always thought of it as a Classical shop, but they do have a good selection of smaller label jazz that Joe doesn't carry. If you're looking for used Classical CD's, this is the place to go. I'd say it's worth the walk (drive if you have a good haul) from Euclid.

Impulsive Jazz Album Buying Syndrome
spinlps replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous Music
There is no cure... #2 is due March 5 and I'm trying to slow things down. I'm trying a zero sum solution of one has to go before something else takes it's place on the shelves. So far I'm at +20 or so ... that's after boxing up 2 Uhaul boxes of CD's for trade and another two boxes of LP's to sell! Unfortuneately, something happened this week that will DEFINITELY slow me down. Baby #1 (2 years old) suffered a spiral fracture of his left tibia and is now in a full leg cast. Our current car seats have a protective bar that lowers across the waist which the cast now obstructs. My wife asked me to check out some new car seats and I realized I could have bought 2 car seats for what I've spent on music the since September
