The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 I've been playing my Piltdown Men 45s McDonald's cave/Brontaosaurus stomp - Capitol UK Piltdown rides again/Bubbles in the tar - Capitol UK A pretty girl is like a melody/Big lizzard - Capitol UK I think "Piltdown rides again" is still a great R&R/pop single. I posted a youtube version here a few days ago But I still think that their masterpiece was a joyous arrangement of "A pretty girl is like a melody", done a la David Rose's "The stripper" and a HELLUVA lot better for a stripper to gyrate to. It may only be R&R/pop, but dammit, this is GOOD! MG Quote

clifford_thornton Posted May 17, 2010 Report Posted May 17, 2010 Yeah, Alvin's a real force of nature, and a fascinating character/historian of the music. Hopefully he'll be back to playing more regularly again soon - he's been practicing quite a bit, he says. Now: Anthony Braxton - Six Compositions (Quartet) 1984 - (Black Saint) Quote

jeffcrom Posted May 17, 2010 Report Posted May 17, 2010 Mary Lou Williams/Cecil Taylor: Embraced (Pablo) This was not a great concert, but it was an interesting one. Cecil is often portrayed as the "bad guy" of this event, but I hear more communication from his direction than from Mary Lou. Quote
paul secor Posted May 17, 2010 Report Posted May 17, 2010 Mary Lou Williams/Cecil Taylor: Embraced (Pablo) This was not a great concert, but it was an interesting one. Cecil is often portrayed as the "bad guy" of this event, but I hear more communication from his direction than from Mary Lou. I remember reading somewhere that Cecil claimed that Mary Lou changed things up at the last minute by bringing in Mickey Roker. Cecil felt that if she felt a drummer was necessary, she could have asked Andrew Cyrille, who had played with both of them. But I'm sure that Mary Lou had her side of things. Hadn't listened to this in a long time. It has it's moments and sure is "interesting", as you say. And I agree that there is generally more attempt at communication from Cecil's side. Perhaps Mary Lou felt overwhelmed. If so - understandable. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 17, 2010 Report Posted May 17, 2010 I'm sure a more sympathetic rhythm section could have been used - Cyrille and Sirone would have been excellent for both. Quote
