From what I've heard, the time capsule was sealed in 1977. For some reason, I think of Bob Newhart when I play this. Edited July 16, 2018 by Kevin Bresnahan Quote
sidewinder Posted July 16, 2018 Report Posted July 16, 2018 I find ‘Time Capsule’ to be an enjoyable session. With Kenny Barron on Fender it has a feel of mid-70s Muse sessions but is more heavily produced. Bunky Green on alto, which is always a plus. Although no masterpiece, this one is under-rated. Quote

Thanks, onto the "investigate at some point" list it goes Quote
sidewinder Posted July 16, 2018 Report Posted July 16, 2018 (edited) ‘Time Capsule’ it definitely is. In fact, Elvin still had groups somewhat in this style when I saw him at Scotts around 1980 and Ryo Kawasaki was still there on guitar I think (correction - it was Fumio Kawashima). I bought this one from Mole nearly 40 years ago now () and always thought that it and the ‘To Duke With Love’ were brilliant. A clean up on the VPI and it is sounding magnificent. Plus - Cedar Walton, Sam Jones and Billy Higgins were never captured better IMO. Edited July 17, 2018 by sidewinder Quote

sidewinder Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 (edited) Yep, got an East Wind of that one. Not quite so fond but will have to dig it out. There’s the ‘Quintet at Boomers’ on East Wind as well. Edited July 17, 2018 by sidewinder Quote

HutchFan Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 (edited) Count Basie - Basie Jam at the Montreux Jazz Festival 1975 (Pablo) Interesting to hear Johnny Griffin, who plays like his normal bad-ass self, in this context -- since he wasn't a Granz jam session regular. and Art Tatum - Masterpieces (MCA, 2-LPs) Everything here sounds great -- but today I'm really enjoying the bluesy band tracks with Joe Turner's vocals.  Edited July 17, 2018 by HutchFan Quote

A good tribute. Both passed at young ages. Hadn't realize until you pointed it out that they both passed on the same day of the year. Quote
