HutchFan Posted August 25, 2018 Report Posted August 25, 2018 (edited) First spin of this new-to-me LP: Bobby Hackett with Zoot Sims, Bucky Pizzarelli, Hank Jones, Richard Davis & Mel Lewis - Strike Up the Band (Flying Dutchman) Zoot always sounds good. 16 hours ago, chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez said: im going to try n get something good on discogs and im really excited to tell you all about it (its jazz) but i cant right now even though im sure 99.9999% of you wouldn't care about getting it,but yea it might be good- That feeling of anticipation is often so delicious. HutchFan Posted August 26, 2018 Report Posted August 26, 2018 This is something special. I only discovered it recently, but it's already one of my favorite jazz records with vocals. I think this set is even better than Carmen's more well-known Great American Songbook on Atlantic. Quote

Royal Oak Posted August 26, 2018 Report Posted August 26, 2018 Oh no, didn't enjoy that at all, album aborted after side 1. Horrible recording. Wilkerson sounds a bit "paper and comb", and Nat Adderley is shrill. Quote

Wilkerson sounds a bit "paper and comb", and Nat Adderley is shrill. Each his own, I guess. My stereo orig. of this one sounds OK. Admittedly, it did benefit from a spin on the RCM. Gave it another spin - it is true that Wilkerson sounds a bit ‘comb and paper’. Nowhere near as well recorded as his Blue Notes. Edited August 26, 2018 by sidewinder Quote

chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted August 27, 2018 Report Posted August 27, 2018 (edited) not the special thing i was telling you about earlier......but i got this today, full price (15), no crazy deal- but it has rare early hank......hanks 2nd to last Dizzy session is on this. one song, "rails" has an extreme hank solo. is this the 1st issue? cause the discog says verve mgv 8357 is an unreleased lp. Dizzy Gillespie Big Band. But the material here is compiled from a few dizzy albums, it as "Caravan" from the album AFRO..... Edited August 27, 2018 by chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Quote

clifford_thornton Posted August 27, 2018 Report Posted August 27, 2018 Nice, don't have that one. Now: Dexter Gordon -- Pulsation -- (Riverside, FR mono) nice-sounding European pressing of the Jazzland date. Was also issued with this title/cover in Holland. Quote
