Alfred Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Wave still exists, though Peter Ind now issues CDs rather than LPs. Correct! WAVE But not every record he published is re-released on CD. Therefore you need a turntable. Apologies for sticking a CD response in the Vinyl Thread, but I thought it was important for folks to know about the music. I do believe that music is more important than format. Hope that I'm forgiven on both counts. Welcome. Quote

I haven't the original NJ pressing, but those germans were great in this case! Any opinion about Bellaphon? Edited March 30, 2005 by porcy62 Quote

MartyJazz Posted April 1, 2005 Report Posted April 1, 2005 Having recently received a CD copy of Stanley Cowell's BRILLIANT CIRCLES (Black Lion), I was very disappointed in that the infrequently recorded tenor saxophonist Tyrone Washington sounded like he was playing in a closet a couple of studios away. So I took out my LP copy (Freedom Polydor) and heard it the way it should sound. Quote
Parkertown Posted April 1, 2005 Report Posted April 1, 2005 New vinyls the last couple days... Hank Mobley-Soul Station-Classic 200gm. Not bad at all... AEC-Fanfare for the Warriors-4 Men w/ Beards 180gm... John Jenkins, Cliff Jordan & Bobby Timmons-New Jazz/OJC reissue; sounds good as well! Freddie Hubbard-Open Sesame-Classic 180gm. Awesome! Totally Awesome! Used but MINT vinyl: Keith Jarrett-Birth- on Atlantic. Nice... B-) ----- Shit...life is good! Quote
Parkertown Posted April 1, 2005 Report Posted April 1, 2005 (edited) Also used, but near mint: Osibisa - WOYAYA - a nice German pressing in beautiful shape. There is quite a bit of surface noise in between songs, but once the music starts it completely disappears! And the sound! Oh man, what sound! Incredible presence, and the tonality is just perfect. It's really wowing me... Have you guys ever discussed these guys before? Cuz they're a new discovery for me... B-) Edited April 1, 2005 by Parkertown Quote

wolff Posted April 2, 2005 Author Report Posted April 2, 2005 The Shins: Chutes Too Narrow (Sub-Pop) John Jenkins Blue Note 1573 (Classic Records) What a great cover. Has entered my top 10 of BN covers. Seeing it reproduced with such gloss and richness of color and expense is a great touch. Dizzy Reece: Star Bright (Classic Records) Quote
sidewinder Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 Agree with you about the 'John Jenkins' cover. I have a nice Toshiba of that one. Just spinning the 'Wally Edition' Pete La Roca 'Basra'. Sounds pretty good, he did a nice job on this one. Followed up with Jackie McLean 'Bluesnik' 47W63rd deepgroove side 2 (one of my favourites) and Grant Green 'Gratstand' mono original, with some very nice Yusef Lateef. Then another Wally. Wayne Shorter 'Etcetera'. Quote
1ngram Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra Vol 1. I remember hearing this first almost 30 years ago, I think, in a coal celler turned into a basement flat. It sounded weird as hell then and no matter how many times I play it I still get the same frisson. I just know there is a tune in there somewhere and every now and again I get the merest hint of it but what the hell, they sound as if they are having a wonderful time anyway. Quote
sidewinder Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 Larry Young 'Unity' (NY USA stereo). Kicks ass ! Quote
1ngram Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 The Band - Greatest Hits compilation then Byrd Greatest Hits compilation. Actually I'm cheating, played them on cassette copied from vinyl in the car. Every click and scratch from years of vinyl playing faithfully reproduced. Quote
