How many days do people outside of the US get? I feel we get the least amount of days for vacation/holiday then any other country.

Working with my counterpart in our european office today. He gets 6 weeks a year compaired to my 20 days for vacation and sick time.

We work too much here i the states. Life's too short, we should enjoy it more.

You get 20 days for vacation and sick time!

I hate to admit it, but compared to me, you have it good. :(

:D I was thinking the same thing when I read the post!!

That's total. So if I take 20 days off, that's it for the year.

You guys don't get at least 2 weeks vacation.

I work in France for an American company and every time the vacation time issue is discussed between colleagues from the two continents, the US people just do not want to believe there is so much vacation time over here (and in most of Europe).

Legal vacation time is a full five weeks for a year. I work in the media business and French journalists are entitled to two more vacation weeks because they are liable to work on legal holidays -whether they work those days or not!

Now that's what I call working to live, and not living to work.

In this country the law states that the minimum vacation days are 2 weeks (10 working days for a 5 days a week schedule). You gain more vacation days if you gain some seniority in your workplace: Each additional year on the same workplace adds another 2 days per year, untill you reach the max. of 22 (work) days per year, which is over a month of vacation.

That's the law, which means that's the minimun.

You can negotiate your working terms with your employee, of course. For example, in my current job I get 30 (work) days off a year, which amounts to 6 a weeks vacation.

I've been at the same place from a physical standpoint for 24 years. I realize that's unusual in this day and age, but since my career path has taken me from staff member for 15 years to management for the last 9 I feel as if I've had two separate careers.

At any rate, one of the benefits of this is that I am entitled to 37 paid days off a year. :tup

Towards the end of my working life I was getting six weeks plus two or three more days for odd things like the Queen's birthday. Better than the average uK holiday I believe. Retired now, decent pension too.

Well, the last company I worked for I got 29 days a year combination vacation/sick time.

Of course I was a moron and quit that job...now I'm working as a contractor and don't qualify for any days off with pay...until I've worked for a year with the company. So...any vacation (including the holiday tomorrow)...come out of my pocket.

If the company is closed, such as tomorrow, why is that coming out of your pocket, you should be paid. How about weekends? You get those off?

Well, I should have probably phrased that better...

What I meant is that I don't get any paid holidays...so tomorrow is 8 hours with no pay. If I want my full 40 hours this week then I have to work 10 hour shifts Tuesday - Friday.

If I was an actual employee of the company I am working for then I would get paid for tomorrow. But I'm an hourly contractor so I'm ineligble for the first year.
