The Cure - "The Cure" (2004)

Have to admit I'm really looking forward to this one. I've got nearly every Cure album since 1987 (and a smattering of those from before '87 too). For my money, every Cure album since "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" (1987) is a winner. (OK, probably not "Wild Mood Swings" (1996), but everything else is great.)

There was also a 4-CD box-set of nothin' but b-sides just recently released too, which I suspect is quite good. (I've got a grey-market "greatest b-sides" disc, with most of the b-sides from the "Kiss-Me/Disintegration/Wish" era, which are really great.)

And I hear that Rhino is going to start releasing the entire Cure catalog, with bonus discs of extra material (b-sides, live, demos, etc...), in much the same way as they've done for the Elvis Costello catalog.

Let's hear it for one of the great misanthropes (and song-writers) of our time, Robert Smith.

Any other cure fans in the house??

The only new albums I still buy from musical groups, from 'back in the day,' are new Steely Dan albums. The new Steelys are as good now as they were then.

On the new Cure... Errr, is there any Lee Morgan or Wayne Shorter on there? :P

I saw them play 17 years ago at the great Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh. I was 17 and with a bunch of friends and we had a blast. A couple of weekends ago I went to the WHFSestival on a date; had a great time. The Cure was the last act playing for the day. They sucked. 3/4 of the crowd left after two songs.

Truth be told, Robert Smith was/is basically a great pop singles artist...seldom does he sustain my interest over a whole album these days, although I was a big fan back in the day.

DISINTIGRATION, THE HEAD ON THE DOOR, and THE TOP are probably the only cure albums I'd still consider purchasing in remastered updated versions.

Hopefully they'll add some of the fun one-off singles released around the time of THE TOP to that CD reissue (e.g. "Love Cats," and maybe some of the other stuff included on the old EP THE WALK).

You probably have a point there...

From what I've heard on record, they never were much of a great live act. (Or at least I've found the live documents mixed, at best.)

The two live CD's they put out in 1993 were only so-so (called "Paris" and "Show").

But there was a full-length 'live' EP in 1990, called "Entreat", which I like quite a bit better. It's made up entirely of live versions of tracks off "Disintegration". I think it was only ever available as an import -- got mine on eBay, where it shows up pretty frequently. (The same live cuts were also available, spread across multiple CD singles, at the time.)

Still, much as I like my Cure studio albums, I would never would claim they were a great live band. (But if they came to Kansas City, I'd still probably half consider going to hear them, depending on ticket prices and such.)

The first live concert I attended (on my own) was the Cure. It was 1984 and they were playing in the basketball gym at a local university. I'd never seen so many people dressed in black and smoking clove cigarettes in one place. :P

I thought it was a great show. It was a smoke and strobe light fest. If anyone has ever heard the old CONCERT album they put out, then you'll know what the music was like (it was the same tour).

I thought they were great up to THE HEAD ON THE DOOR. After that, I lost interest.

I belive that CD was released only in Japan-at least that's what it says on the slipcover for the CD. I bought it when I was still in Japan. Listening to that CD now reminds me of good old days in Japan. "Disintegration" on this CD is just great!!!

Haven't heard a "new" Cure since The Top and like a few others don't particularly want too but recall having a lot of time for Faith and Pornography.

Saw them a couple of times live in the 80's and won't forget a Glastonbury gig in 87,thunder,lightning followed by a full moon.Quite a spectacle, could probably have passed on the acid!!!

The Cure was one of those bands that I initially was forced to listen...girlfriend was a big fan. (I wonder how many guys at Cure shows were dragged there by their girlfriends?). Anyway, she also listened to alot of crap like The Smiths and that other weepy, 80's post new wave garbage...anyway, I digress. The Cure was one of the only bands that she listened to that I could stomach...and then some of their stuff started to grow on me a little. I then went through a short phase of appreciating them...but they never really "clicked" with me...and once the girl was gone...so were The Cure.

Anyway, looking back now (and I haven't heard this stuff in years mind you) I like the earlier recordings the best. All the pre-keyboards material...favorites were probably Pornography and The Head On The Door. Also liked some of the bootleg live stuff from really early in their career when they were still rather punky in nature. I never liked Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me...thought it was overblown and saccharine. After that I totally lost interest.

So unless they do a "return to their roots" album and go back to doing quirky guitar, bass, drums pop tunes...I'll most likely stay away.
