"Who's there" is the most important element of a knock knock joke. Without it, it is just one person saying knock knock over and over again.

Knock knock... (pause)... Knock knock... (pause)... (louder) Knock knock... etc.

Then again, the phrase "Knock knock" is also just as integral. You really can't have a knock knock joke without these two elements.

Definitely "who's there". With it, you can't fail; the recipient of your humor has signed on and become part of the joke. Without it, you might as well just shut up. If you have to repeat "knock, knock", don't bother; they aren't signing on and just want you to go away...

I say it's a tossup between Knock Knock and Who's There. If either is MIA this kind of joke is DIA but hell that happens a lot with Knock Knock jokes.

You: "I just hear the FUNNIEST knock-knock joke! Wanna here it?"

SYL: "SURE! Sounds great! Let's hear it!"

You (already laughing because it's so funny): "Ok...(chuckle)....you....(snort)... start it...(guffaw)"

SYL (by now eager to join in the fun and starting to giggle their ownself): "Ok....Knock-knock."

You (immediately stopping all laughing and with a tone of TOTAL seriousness): "Who's there?"

Works every time, and REALLY cements those bonds of trust!
