ghost of miles Posted June 24, 2004 Report Posted June 24, 2004 (edited) Talk of the Ferlinghetti Fantasy re-issue has put me in mind of occasionally playing some spoken-word pieces on my new late-night jazz program... what's the "word" on Ken Nordine? His "Best of Word Jazz" is supposed to be pretty good, but I'll be damned if I can find a copy for less than $35 on the Net. Edited June 24, 2004 by ghost of miles Quote
Joe Posted June 24, 2004 Report Posted June 24, 2004 Some really fantastic stuff on the Rhino anthology. Nordine is much more Surreal than Jean Shepard, like some cross between DR. SAX Kerouac and Edgar Allen Poe (hey, come to think of it, the gap between the tweo is not all that wide anyway...) A piece like "Down The Drain" would work wonderfully on radio (well, it sounds good on an old mix tape I have). Interesting arragements on the Dot sides Rhino collected by Fred Katz. Horn solos by Paul Horn. The Asphodel label has recently reissued both COLORS and WINK, both of which are less "jazzy" than the earlier material, but both of which are more readily available. COLORS in particular is a fine, fine record; the accompaniments are quite Dick-Hyman-Sits-Down-At-The-Moog-esque. Quote
JSngry Posted June 24, 2004 Report Posted June 24, 2004 Joe, to pick a nit, it's TWINK - based on a cartoon character/strip of that name. I used to have the LPS of both it and COLORS (my preference of the two, by far, and something I might go so far as to call "essential" for those who are into the whole music/poetry thing), then gave them to a "friend" as a "thank you gesture". Oh well.... Nordine is a GAS. I think I started a thread on him here a few months ago. Larry Kart played golf him one time, it seems. Can't believe that there's no Word Jazz collection curretnly in print, that's just SO wrong. Search the used bins, and pray that justice prevails. But the more recent stuff is equally intriguing too, just not as "playful". Yeah, Ken Nordine is all right by me! Quote
JSngry Posted June 24, 2004 Report Posted June 24, 2004 Dot and Phillips are both under the Universal umbrealla now... Quote
RDK Posted June 25, 2004 Report Posted June 25, 2004 Colors is da' bomb. Is it still available? If so, grab it! Quote
Larry Kart Posted June 25, 2004 Report Posted June 25, 2004 May have mentioned this the last time Nordine's name came up: Dutch pianist-composer Michael Braam (correct sp.) has an album out called "Colors," with each track based on one of the Nordine poems. Interesting stuff, with that typical Dutch eccentricity -- sort of Teddy Wilson meets Cecil Taylor. Quote
alejo Posted June 25, 2004 Report Posted June 25, 2004 I ran across a used copy of this title today for $8.99. I'll PM you the store's telephone number if you want to give them a call. Or, I could check back Friday evening—another excuse to go shopping for music. Nordine is great! I remember listening to his radio show while I was a kid in Wisconsin. He also has a Web site where you can stream some of his shows. http://www.wordjazz.com/radio.php# Have you ever heard Joe Frank? If not check his stuff out. http://www.joefrank.com/ Alejandro P.S. Congratulations on your radio show! Quote
Dan Gould Posted June 25, 2004 Report Posted June 25, 2004 I was transferring a New Year's eve radio program from reel to CD for a board member, and when I came to a ten minute bit from Nordine, sorry, but his pseudo hip jive got to be grating in about fifteen seconds and I decided to edit it out (with permission). Maybe I should have given it a longer chance? I must say I was impressed at the end of the segment when they listed some of the man's voice over credits. Quote
