neveronfriday Posted July 15, 2004 Author Report Posted July 15, 2004 That Joe Newman IS amazing. . . a wonderful reissue. This was one of the many US releases in the series. Just bought it for 6 EURO as new. Let's see what it's like. Cheers! That's money well spent. You won't be sorry! Got it. New and still shrink-wrapped. Excellent stuff! Swings like mad. Beg, steal or borrow. Cheers! Quote
king ubu Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 Beg, steal or borrow. be careful my friend, I might drop by some night Quote
neveronfriday Posted July 15, 2004 Author Report Posted July 15, 2004 Just checked on AMG (as much as that is possible with all those dang timeouts), and they didn't like any of these albums (4 on this compilation), really. I couldn't read their reviews, but I don't get it. Swinging hard at times, very smooth at others, perfect for my taste. Cheers! P.S.: @Flurin: NOBODY has ever made it out of my place with one of my CDs! I immediately get this faint feeling that something bad is about to happen. Never happens to ME though. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 I don't get it either as these are magnificent sessions. Not to mention the fact that it constantly amazes me how great they sound and they were recorded with ONE microphone! Truly careful and thoughtful engineering; the balance of sound and tone is wonderful! Quote

BERIGAN Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 I have the Duke Ellington V11/12, the Bix set (Sold the Joe Newman set awhile back) and have a Fats Waller V9/10 which has one of my favorite Waller tunes Mamacita, but the audio is terrible for some reason....didn't I read somewhere that the Lps were more complete, with alternates and all??? Late Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 Just listened to the Coleman Hawkins Jazz Tribune set — one of my faves. The remastering sounds pretty decent too. Anyone else still spin these? I'm still looking for Sidney Bechet Vol. 5 to complete my (Bechet) RCA series. Let me know if you see one used! Quote
jazzbo Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 I still spin these. . . I'd say I spin the Carlisle, Newman, Teagarden and Hines most often. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 The only one I've got is the Hodges/Davis set and that gets aired regularly. I play it while I'm airing it, too. MG Quote
