Thad Jones-Mel Lewis

Recommended Posts

I have a quick question I was hoping someone could help me out with.

Does anyone have a typed out version of the track listing for the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Solid State Mosaic box that they could quickly post here. Can't seem to find it on the "new and improved (?!?!)" AMG, and I'm curious as to what order everything on the box is in.

Thanks in advance.

This information is direct from Mosaic, is it not? Do you have the actual link? Mosaic should also give additional information.

I'd like to find out who arranged these selections. I know that Thad did most of them, but I think that some were arranged by Bob Brookmeyer and perhaps others. I'd also like to know the album titles on which the selections originally appeared.

Only U.S. issues are included in this discography. Rejected titles not included in the set are listed in italics.

I very much appreciate the valuable information that you added, especially since I see that you had to type this information from the Mosaic insert. I was expecting only a link, but I suppose that Mosaic may have removed it at the point when the collection sold out. Merci beaucoup.

  • 4 weeks later...

Following in the tradition of the post asking for the contents of the "Straight No Filter" LP, which was answered by Jim, does anyone know the track order on the first Jones-Lewis LP? I used to have that LP, and the sequence on it worked really well. I have the Mosaic, but it's in chronological order. I remember that the LP ended with "ABC Blues", which made a great finale.

Just made up a custom CDr of that album, and it was a great listen.

For me, it's all I want from their output. I'm not a big fan of blaring big bands (don't even like 60s Basie), as a lot of them lack that spark that makes jazz interesting for me, but this album is special. There are several reasons for this. Mainly, it's a matter of who's on it: Thad (of course), Pepper Adams, Richard Davis (what a difference HE makes!), Mel (of course), Bob Brookmeyer and Hank Jones. All the arrangements and compositions are good, but the two by Brookmeyer are outstanding. They link this album with the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band nicely. In fact, the arrangement of "Willow, Weep For Me" was made for Mulligan, and you can spot that it was designed for that band's special clarinet and bass clarinet combo. That is not a favorite tune of mine, as it can get tedious, but Brookmeyer did a fine job of turning a sow's ear into a silk purse.

The Mosaic notes claim that the Jones-Lewis band was superior to Mulligan's. Now that the new Mulligan Mosaic is to hand, as well as the other CDs of their work, I strongly disagree. I think Mulligan's band offers a much more interesting set of arrangements, solos and performances.
