ghost of miles Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 A friend of mine has done this & swears by it for purposes of space. He puts the booklet and CD on one side of the sleeve, the back cover on the other side, and cuts out the title spine, inserting it sideways into the sleeve. Obviously you do this if you have no intention of selling your CDs (I don't, although I sometimes pass along singles to friends when I get box-sets that contain the albums). I live in a small 1920s bungalow and am almost literally up to my ears in CD stacks... not yet ready to embrace this solution, but it's starting to seem more tempting. Have others switched from jewel cases to sleeves? One concern I have is that the CDs seem to scratch more easily if they are ones that you remove frequently to play. Quote
Bright Moments Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 i made the switch a few years ago and am very happy. the sleeves go into these drawers: http://www.casedirect.com/product_detail.a...+PF+200&menu=00 of course the mosaics stay in their boxes!! B-) Quote
Jazzmoose Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Never. No way. Ain't gonna happen. You've got to be kidding! Absolutely no way in hell. Nope. Fuggetaboudit. Quote
alejo Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 (edited) Hey Ghost, Here is another option: Gatefold Sleeves from JazzLoft I purchased about 1000 of these things and am still deciding if I like them or not. I use a paper inner sleeve to make sure the CDs don't get scratched. While they do save precious space, it's sometimes hard to read the CD info on the spine. Anywho…they’re worth looking into. If you have somewhere where you can store lots of boxes full of jewel cases (assuming you want to keep the cases just in case), you might consider going with binders. That's what I do--I take the booklets and CDs (but not the tray card or any other stuff) out of the jewel case and just put them all in alphabetically-ordered binders. It's worked pretty well for the last four years, although it has some of the same problems as using sleeves--for instance, a cardboard mini-LP that doesn't have a booklet can be a real pain in the ass if you want the liner notes and album cover. Also, unlike sleeves, you have to perpetually reorganize the binders as you add to the collection. Quote

Ditto...and you know...as much as no one ever wants to part with their jazz, someday down the road one might really need the money, and a large investment would be essentially worthless if you cut up the paperwork.... 1ngram Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Is there anyway to put your CDs into Japanese style mini LP sleeves? Can one buy blanks of these? I once received a compilation Lucky Thompson CD with the CD info printed out in a form that could have been pasted on to such a sleeve so there must be a program somewhere that can duplicate both front and back of such a sleeve. My idea would be to scan front cover and back from the insert and paste it onto a blank mini LP sleeve then keep the jewel box up in the attic. I hate them as they break so easily. Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 I made the switch and I'm very happy. And in the aftermath of Charley, I am even happier knowing that had the storm been coming to the east coast of Florida, it would have taken minutes, literally, to get all my CDs into the car ... and I'd still have room for the not quite so important things, like the dog ... the PC .... the wife .... Hardbopjazz Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 I've seen the light and gonna switch. I ran out of room about 4 months ago. This is the best solution. Quote
Shawn Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Joe originally turned me onto these. The type he purchases doesn't require any cutting, there is a slot for the back artwork & the front, the fold is in the same place as a standard jewel case so you can still see the spine. I moved about a year ago, I didn't have much space for moving things, so I ended up having to take ALL of my discs out of their jewel cases to move them all. Since then I've been slowly replacing the jewel cases...but to be honest I'm just tired of them and think I'll go this route instead. Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 I did not go for sleeves that are roomy enough for liners and tray cards and instead have bundled them and packed them away, and I pitched the jewel boxes. The one advantage to this is that the sleeve requirement is cut in half, which means the binder requirement is also cut in half. My four 550 CD rack was reduced to just three shelves worth of binders. That would be six shelves had I bought sleeves that had space for inserts, and twice as many binders, too. Quote
Joe Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Yep, I am a convert. Used to buy mine from Cadence, now I get them from Bags Unlimited. http://www.bagsunlimited.com/cart/browse.asp?subcat=70 As far as saving jewel cases back for those cases of buyer's remorse... if you have a place to store 'em, fine. You can also always pick up empties from office supply outlets for not a whole lot. Quote

You can also always pick up empties from office supply outlets for not a whole lot. I tried to save a few of the clear ones because of the possibility that I'd sell some CDs that have printed tray cards on the inside of the jewel box. I also saved some white ones because there was a possiblity of selling some Japanese BNs, and I only find the black jewel boxes at Office Depot. But really, assuming you're still buying CDs, right there is a steady stream of potential empties to use. And really, who among us has stopped buying CDs??? Quote
Claude Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 How do you browse your CDs when they are stored in sleeves? With jewel case you have a very quick overview over your collection by being able to read the spine and also detect CDs simply by the color of the spine. There are now also more and more CDs being sold in digipacks, sometimes the complete discographical information is not available on a seperate booklet, so one needs the digpack too and the sleeve option doesn't work. Noj Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Anyone have that link to those slick metal cabinets for jewel cases someone posted a while back? Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 How do you browse your CDs when they are stored in sleeves? Its pretty easy to browse your collection, actually. As Bob Seger once said, "Turn the page." It may be a drag to not have discographical details right at hand, but frankly I haven't missed it. On my A-to-Z trek, I've just been bringing in the CDs in one of those CD wallets, so I don't know specifcally who sidemen are or whatever, but it hasn't bothered me at all. The existence of digipaks and mini LP sleeves has meant that I kept one of the CD racks for those, but I was going to do that anyway for my rock/pop CDs. Quote
Noj Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 http://www.can-am.ca/cdvideo.htm Found 'em! I might order a 2700 capacity set up. Quote

Noj Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Your cabinets are nice, Claude. Were they pricey? Quote
JohnS Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 I'm sticking with jewel cases. If I buy from Cadence I have the cds shipped in their "jewel box begones" but I don't bother to change them. Quote
Claude Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Your cabinets are nice, Claude. Were they pricey? No, $180 per piece, but they are out of production now. They were available in the Ikea office furniture line. Quote
Noj Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Wouldn't you know it, OOP. As if I didn't run into that problem enough. Ikea has these other ones for $50 each, but I'd have to buy 9 of them. So...the sleeves might be a better call for me. Then again I might save up and do those Can-Am cabinets--those aren't cheap! Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 (edited) Any idea where to get the liners/disc sleeves that are the hi-end 'fuzzy' stuff like in the japanese mini lp gatefold issued discs? I'd feel a whole lot better about the jazz-loft/bags unltd disc and tray card format if i could toss the extra padding of those liners in there. edit: spoke to "bags unlimited" and they sell the tray card gatefolds to "jazz-loft". so for a few bucks+ less per 100 ct go w/ the mfg! and they get them right out with free shipping rather than paying for media mail from jazz-loft.
