Bright Moments Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 hmmm, i never heard of this one before......wayne shorter.......atlantis.....1985.....and it's in the used bin, only $7.95!! ok, i'll give it a try, after all it's wayne, you know juju, speak no evil, footprints etc...it has to be good right? WRONG! oh my goodness, why oh why did you end your recording hiatus (10 years or so) with this stinker! i imagine i am going to get flamed for this but, so be it. p.s. earlier this year i heard wayne live with danilo perez, brian blade & john patitucci and they were amazing. GregK Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 nice cover-speaking of Wayne, though, I'm anticipating his bio coming out in December Quote

jazzbo Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 I'm with you Evan. I keep listening to Wayne around this time trying to har all the things that some people hear. . . and I don't. Nor do I hear much after his comeback. I'm just sort of tired of his "serpentine fire" to borrow a phrase from Maurice White's group. . . . After falling in love with his work in the seventies and listening away up through the nineties I just find that I am disenchanted now in the new millenium; other music speaks louder to me and I've set Wayne's aside. Michael Fitzgerald Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 Recording hiatus? The guy was issuing a record a year as co-leader of Weather Report. It's not like he was off the scene. If the only thing you know about Wayne Shorter are the mid 1960s Blue Note records (that's all that you mention), then gee, no wonder this was a surprise. Mike Quote
GregK Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 I listen to Footprints Live at least once a month, if not more frequently. I'd say he's made a stunning comeback, particularly after seeing him live twice in the past 4 years. Quote
sidewinder Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 (edited) Recall when 'Phantom Navigator' and 'Joy Ryder' came out I picked them up on vinyl and enjoyed them immensely. The verdict now is that some of the sounds (e.g. the synths) are a bit dated and of their time and the rhythmn plods more than a bit in places but there's still some good ideas on both sessions. I had the same feeling about 'Atlantis', which I don't have but did have a listen to on a couple of occasions. I agree re: the quality of the recent band. 'Alegria' is a real winner - holds together better for me than the previous live 'Footprints' disk. Edited November 27, 2004 by sidewinder Quote

Mike well mike, i guess i should have said the "hiatus" was from recording under his own name. however, i have ALL of the good weather report cd's (black market being my personal favorite) and let me tell you mike, atlantis sounds NOTHING like any of them. for what it is worth, the last really good weather report album was 1977's commercial success heavy weather (ok, with the possible exception of 1980's night passage), so wayne had in fact really "waned" from that point to 1985's atlantis. Noj Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Jumping on the bandwagon, Footprints Live dispelled my early opinion that I should only buy jazz from before 1974. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Holy cow, you've been missing out on some good music post '74. Quote
Noj Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Yeppers. It's been a while since I learned that, but thanks. Quote
