paul secor Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 I was looking through Cadence magazine's sale section and came across a listing for "Jazz Organ Discography compiled by J.J. LaComme". I don't know anything about this book, but I thought that someone else here might, and figured that there would be some organ fanatics (under the new edict - aren't we all? ) who'd be interested. Chuck Nessa Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 I got your "jazz organ discography" right here! Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 (edited) Am I the only one that gets my own joke here? (Just confirms that I AM getting old) - Edited January 6, 2005 by AllenLowe Quote
JSngry Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 No I got it. It's just that in the context, talking about Joe Maini being "in there" kinda creeped me out... Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 Do you know about the famous picture with Lenny Bruce and Maini? Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 (edited) well, maybe I am confusing things - but there's a famous shot in which Maini reveals himself over the bell of his horn (somehow I thought Bruce was involved in this but I'm not certain) - Edited January 6, 2005 by AllenLowe Quote
Bill Fenohr Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 Allan, I could be wrong, but i seem to remember hearing that Mani pulled that stunt one night while with the Terry Gibbs Big Band. The way i heard it, Joe would stand up and direct the band during Terry's feature numbers. That was the way he gave them the signal that the song was ending one night while he had his back to the audience. The band broke up ofcourse and the audience and Gibbs had no idea what was going on. That's the way i heard it way back in the 60's. If its true or not, i don't know. Quote
paul secor Posted January 7, 2005 Author Report Posted January 7, 2005 Guess I'm too literal - joke's on me. Anyway, it got some more Joe Maini stuff on the Board. Quote

I purchased the discography a couple of years ago when I was going through a jazz organ phase and wanted as much information as possible. Its nothing fancy (basically a three ring folder with pages). Its arranged in alphabetical order by organist and includes listings of recordings as a leader as well as sideman. I am not sure I could recommend it to anyone looking for something with the appearance that it was professionally done, but it does contain useful information. Quote
