Anyone heard the new CD on High Note?

Released yesterday, I think.

Now playing: Wadada Leo Smith - Kangaroo's Hollow

...yep, got it a couple weeks ago from Fathead at one of his shows. I gave a few details on it in the "Live Shows" forum since I had just returned from the show.

Sorry, I find this disc/title to be ugly commercialism.

Fathead could do something better.

Sorry that its not up to the standards of Nessa Records.

Personally, of all the artists who might do Ray Charles tributes in the future, I can't think of anyone I'd rather hear than Fathead.

So, Chuck, were you offended by Houston Person's tribute to Etta Jones?

You correct, I have heard No solo Nelson, thank God!

Sorry.

I have heard him live on several occasions, as recent as last November with Mulgrew Miller, but what can I say, he's not my cup of tea!

He DOES play fequently with the motors/fans turned down, though, like his work with Dave Holland ( and I found that last double live cd VERY SAD INDEED! )

My favorite, by a wide margin, is JOE LOCKE.

We have very strong opinions, here; but I'll make you a deal: I'll go out and buy that Nelson cd if you go and buy any recent Locke. O.K.?

the thing about the internet and newsgroups is that you can never understand the tone of a statement unless it's out and out over the top...which i certainly hope mine wasn't!

my opinion about nelson isn't strong at all. it's just that i have 4 recordings in which there's plenty of vibrato. FWIW, i also *completely* agree with you about the recent holland double-disc set... now compare him with locke or milt, his vibrato may as well be vibrato-less. your point isn't lost on me at all.

nonetheless, i'd be happy to take you up on your deal. recommend to me a locke recording, outside of that 4 walls project...

regards,

We Do have a lot to agree about! My comments here are only intended in the the most gentle way. There is too much to love in this music! Although, I have strong opinions about Locke. Try "Beauty Burning"

Joe Locke: BEAUTY BURNING

Danny, I agree Fathead is the right guy (or Hank Crawford). I'm saying I find the timing less than tasteless. I'd bet money the label had the idea.

If Fathead wants to do a "tribute date" he could wait, plan, write, arrange and present a killer disc for all of us.

Why do you insist on making these things personal?

i agree the timing is questionable, at best.

given the liner photograph though, i'm also pretty certain that this project was in production prior to ray's passing.

I think even if they decided to do this 15 minutes after Ray's passing or yesterday, it would have been easy to ad the photograph of Ray and Fathead.

Guaranteed that this project was conceived before the passing of Ray Charles. I had a chance to speak with "Fathead" after his concert at Spivey Hall in Atlanta last July. He advised that he was leaving that gig to travel up to Woodstock NY to begin recording sessions for the Ray Charles tribute CD (would have been 7/23).

Not saying that the label, High Note, might have influenced this choice, but "Fathead" has enough character to select his own projects.
