Guest ariceffron Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 i was just listening to 'shes goin bald' from smiley smile and my word that tune DEFINETLY influenced Frank Zappa. isnt it obvious? Quote
AllenLowe Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 ARE YOU SURE IT ISN'T THE OPPOSITE? Quote
Stereojack Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 I don't think either one influenced the other. Both Zappa and the Beach Boys have roots in 1950's doo-wop, and each would reference that style on occasion - partly tongue in cheek, partly with affection. jack Quote
AfricaBrass Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 I always thought this track was influenced by hashish or something potent like that. I have a Smile bootleg that has the full version of "Our Prayer" - After the beautiful singing, they break down into stoned laughter. It's amazing they could sing so well while totally loaded. I haven't smoked anything in a decade, but I sure sucked as a musician when I did (I thought I was great, though). I agree with Jack, it was probably just a common influence. Smiley Smile was recorded in mid-67 and Zappa had already done Doo-Wop type stuff. I know Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, Friends are slagged-off by some, but I think they're great albums. Quote
JSngry Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 I know Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, Friends are slagged-off by some, but I think they're great albums. Same. Quote
Brandon Burke Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 I know Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, Friends are slagged-off by some.... A situation very telling of the personality in question. And not good or bad, necessarily. Just telling. I love those records. Quote
AllenLowe Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 I actually think it's very possible that the Beach Boys were looking somewhat to Zappa when they made those records - the ironic, distanced lyrics are related to the whole new abstract rock thing, and Zappa was certainly seen as one of the leading rock non-conformists - Quote
sonic1 Posted February 17, 2005 Report Posted February 17, 2005 I love the beach boys. Just wanted to say that. Quote
David Williams Posted February 17, 2005 Report Posted February 17, 2005 And the Beach Boys Love You! Quote
Alexander Posted February 17, 2005 Report Posted February 17, 2005 I've been actually hearing some strong connections between Zappa and George Clinton (especially the Funkadelic material). I'm amazed that they never collaborated. What a great album that would've been! Quote
Guest ariceffron Posted February 21, 2005 Report Posted February 21, 2005 the part i was discussing was not doo wop but really more in the crazy frank 'speaking' style...ie. muffin' man Quote
