BERIGAN Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 (edited) Didn't know that Martin Denny was until quite recently, still amongst the living, so thought that I would toss in a few that might suprise folks (feel free to add to the list!!!!) Charles Lane Yep, 100 years old!!!! Saw him on a taped clip on the Screen actor's Guild awards show saying how he joined them in the early 30's and was still a member. AfricaBrass Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 They had an interview with Charles Lane last week on the today show. To tell the truth, I didn't know his name, but I sure knew his face. It was nice to see he was in good health. I had no idea he was still around. I guess he worked until he was 90. Quote

Randy Twizzle Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 Charles Lane, didn't he play Mr. Dithers in the Blondie movies? Figured he was LONG gone by now. Wow... Lane never played Mr Dithers, however as allmovie.com says "Lane has been a familiar figure in movies (and, subsequently, on television) for 60 years, portraying crotchety, usually miserly, bad-tempered bankers and bureaucrats." He was on numerous sitcoms and had recurring roles in The Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction (as Homer Bedlow) among others. Allmovie gives his birth date as Jan 26, 1905. Quote

We couldn't figure it out...then it hit me, Herbert Lom??? Checked on IMDB, and it was!!! He is 88 as well.... Quote

Did he ever play Mr. Dithers on any sort of Blondie TV show then? I have a childhood memory of him doing so, or so I think... I mean, the guy looks almost exactly like Mr. Dithers. Quote
Big Al Posted May 2, 2005 Report Posted May 2, 2005 Kitty Carlisle is 90 this year. I never knew she did her own singing in A Night at the Opera. And she was only 20 when that movie came out, so you gotta figure she was still in her teens while the picture was being made! WOW!!!! Quote
Big Al Posted May 2, 2005 Report Posted May 2, 2005 Oops, my bad. Carlisle will be 95 this year. That'll teach me to rely on allmovie.com for my info. Confirmed by imdb.com and other sources, she was actually born in September 1910, not 1915. Still, that voice..... Quote
Free For All Posted May 2, 2005 Report Posted May 2, 2005 STILL ALIVE.................. Phyllis Diller Marty Allen Al Lewis Quote
BERIGAN Posted October 22, 2005 Author Report Posted October 22, 2005 Tony Martin had many a pop hit and starred in Films such as The Big Store , and Ziegfeld Girl. Will be 93 in December. Bet being married to Cyd Charisse would make one want to stay around! Quote
sidewinder Posted October 22, 2005 Report Posted October 22, 2005 English astronomer/TV personality Patrick Moore. He has been doing his BBC TV show 'The Sky at Night' since 1957 and it's still going strong ! Quote
BERIGAN Posted October 22, 2005 Author Report Posted October 22, 2005 Deanna Durbin will be 84 in December. She just about saved Univeral from Bankruptcy in the 30's...some of her films are very dated today, but a few are still quite enjoyable. It Started with Eve (With Charles Laughton) is her best film, IMO. She quit films in 1948, and appearently hasn't even been interviewed since 1949! She now lives in France. As an aside, my Mom's 2 older sisters were huge fans of Deanna's and we have photos of my Aunt Betty meeting Deanna on the set of one of her films. She was the president of a DD fan Club. Quote
BERIGAN Posted October 22, 2005 Author Report Posted October 22, 2005 Ever Heard of Anita Page? She was in Silent films such as Our Dancing Daughters , and talkies such as Our Blushing Brides and the original Broadway Melody of 1929. She retired in the 30's only to make a comback in the last 5 years! She is 95! Quote

sidewinder Posted October 22, 2005 Report Posted October 22, 2005 Uncanny likeness ! Patrick Moore is one of those guys who is an institution in the UK. He was getting on a bit when I first saw him on TV in the 1960s and he has carried on going like an energizer bunny. Ex-Queen guitarist (and astronomer) Brian May is a big fan of his and I recall that his back-garden telescope and home survived a tornado which hit his home on Selsey Bill some years ago in a freek incident. BBC4 also did a tribute night for him quite recently in advance of the 50-th aniversary of the 'Sky at Night' show. A 'happening' sort of guy ! Quote
