Some C.D recommendations...please

Besides Ellington, Monk, etc., don't forget Charlie Parker, the Bird. His stuff is essential. But you'll get to it eventually.

Have you checked out the Mosaic website (mosaicrecords.com). That will give you a great cross-section of some amazing music.

I don't really have favorites. I love it all.

If you have jazz that you like, check out the individual players- is there a very good drummer, trumpet player, etc? If so, find recordings by that player as a leader, then do the same on those recordings. Over time, you'll discover a lot of great music.

I started with John McLaughlin, moved on to Miles when I saw that McLaughlin was on a recording of Miles, then discovered tons of great people as a result.

I more or less followed the same path into jazz as PhillyQ. Just pay attention to who's on the CDs you like, and get more stuff featuring them.
